So Jon, do you feel like you missed out at all?

After watching what seemed to be the best big air competition ever, by a long shot, I wondered this question. Everyone seemed to have lots of fun. The progession and tricks thrown were insane annnnddddd the jump didn't seem to be that terrible, considering what was thrown on it. Initially I agreed with Jon that if the jump was super flat and a brutal landing then everyone should boycott. But, as it turned out, they did a pretty decent job with the jump and the comp went off like fireworks at a redneck barbeque on the 4th. So, Jon, are you happy you missed it?

since his "tornado" or sw dub 12 as the rest of us call it, wouldn't have placed 1st or 2nd, he probably is glad he skipped it

If I had a bad feeling about a kicker that size after airing and throwing tricks over it a few times, I would generally respect it and do the same as Jon did. At that level of skiing, anything little that keeps in the back of your mind might be enough to throw you off, and fucking up can kill you.

this. as jon said, bowing out and listening to his gut has kept him healthy so far.

what does he have to prove? he made this sport what it is today, and he has his event and racing to focus on, why risk it on something that doesnt really matter.

I never said he had anything to prove - clearly he doesn't. Just wondering. To me it seems kind of the like the trip that your buddies went on but you stayed behind to work and they came back and talked about how epic it was all the time. Meh, maybe I am just over speculating.

but he implied that he needed to go learn some new tricks. im not sure that he even would have qualified for finals, much less actually podiumed and i think he realizes that. he got to still witness the stoke, and im really not sure he would have even had the chance to participate.

He probably realises that with the current talent, minimum to podium is a 14+ double and taking his age into account he's more likely to break bones than anything else.. Unless he gets those rotations on point which I'm sure could come with practice for him, it's almost pointless competing.

He's a naturally competitive guy so it's probably a case where 'if i'm not 100% on the jump, not going to have a huge chance of a podium in any case, then whats the point because there are bigger and better things in the future and injury by pushing myself too far isn't an option'

Do you remember Jon competing in X-Games halfpipe years ago when the pipe was still shitty? He was barely boosting 7 feet out of the pipe when others were like 20. He has always been a bit scared but as he said that's what kept him far from injuries all these years. Props or not I don't know..

Wow you're a fucking idiot. He did not say being scared was what kept him from injury, but being cautious, and not taking unnecessary risks. I very much doubt he was scared, since he has after all hit the JOI/JOSS jumps, which give significantly more airtime. He didn't like the way the jump was set up, and that's fair enough. I'd have done the same.

Jon aint scared, he just is used to better. i mean common, can you even compare that jump to his that he has built. i think not bitches

If you insist on making a thread like this, I would aim for Mike Hornbeck. Jon never said sick shit wouldn't go down. Also, Jon admitted upfront on his blog that he couldn't blame the jump.

Not gonna lie I lol'd a little when after hearing Jon say that the jump was really sketchy, coming online to see that the most technical tricks ever thrown in freeskiing went down on said jump.

i get the feeling Jon isn't really into spinning as fast as he possibly can off of any jump built like the one at x.

I have no hate for jon but when i read that he was not going to compete i kinda gotta a vibe from his blog that the jump was not good enough for him. i kinda laughed as i was watching the big air because that was such a sick night. but again no hate for jon

idk, but it would have been sick to see Jon go head to head against Bobby Brown, TJ, Elias, and every1.

Hopin they have the same jam session set-up for xgames 15 big air.

Jon would have had no chance to win anyway dude, so it better that he didnt compete because he always gets so pissy if he doesnt win. Stick to ski racing for now Jon, because basically for this year your not a freeskier, no competitions for you.

that's irrelevant. what matters is the statements they made about what would go down. hornbeck said everyone would be doing the same tricks, and it would be basically unbearable to watch. jon said the jump sucked, but he never said it was gonna be lame. it's one thing to be a wet blanket about the jump, and another to be a wet blanket about the skiing. sure, hornbeck blamed it on the event, not the skiers, but he was still wrong as fuck and should acknowledge it.

this all makes me lol so hard. god damn kids these days are good at talking shit about the dude who made things like big air on friday night possible, by pushing the sport to where it is today.

dude pioneered jump building, brought doubles to the mainstream.

I totally respect Jon's decision to drop out, but at the same time it would've been cool to just see him say fuck it and go for it anyway.

you should add "and getting hurt" to the end of that.

Why would you hit a jump you were sketched out on and your throwing dubs over it which are very risky and end your season easily if you aren't completely sure about the jump.

No it's a great example. Hornbeck made a thread claiming that big air would just be the same tricks over and over and that it wouldn't be entertaining to watch. He was wrong. Bobby threw a new double, TJ threw a new double, everybody was sending shit giant and having a good time.

Ok so first of all dont call me a kid because I have been on here longer than you and am probably older than you. I know what Jon has done for the sport and has brought it to the mainstream, but he has been on a steady decline the last few years. I am all about Jon pursuing ski racing, but the one thing he said was that it would not stop him from being a freeskier, but the fact is that it has. He hasnt put out a legit segment this year or done a comp. Yes I know he decided not to compete in his event but i still think he hasnt been really comitted to being who he is in the freeskiing world, while he has been traveling everywhere for racing. end rant.

he builds the best jumps in the world and lets the best skiers hit them. that's his "commitment to the freeskiing world". let the man race on the side for christ's sake!

yo imabro! maybe you shouldn't have let hanging around on the web for the last years stop _you_ from being a freeskier.. maybe then you would have improved from that 360 some time during the last 6 years..

is this the start of a new era? where all of newschoolers hates yet another pioneer of our sport because he isnt hyphy enough?

lmao.

so what your saying is since he hasnt won anything in a while he should quit skiing? i guess so should every other skier who hasnt won anything, that makes no sense. he puts on THE best event every year. he builds the most progressive jumps every year. he made skiing what it was today, and yet he gets no respect.

i dont understand how it effects any of you that he dropped out. he didnt feel safe, so he didnt do it. apparently that matters a lot more to all of you than it does to him....

wait, if he hasnt put out segments at all, whats his video blog? and hes 28 years old..

he invented a new trick (to add on top of the other tricks he's invented), does that count for anything? he's spent a shitload of his time working on JOI and JOSS, does that count for anything? i'd say he's fucking committed to be putting on the best competitions in the world for the best skiers in the world.

haha, oh yeah, remember last year when he lost to a double front? what an asshole, throwing tech tricks that paved the way for this years medalists.
