So in all honesty how bad are Tabacco products?

Most people who use tobacco have an anxiety disorder. Also if you're in war and you smoke tobacco you're pretty much asking to get sniped at night.

First off, I didn't realise your allergy was that bad, sorry that it is. Where do you live though? if in the us, people smoke like 20 times less that in France, in here you literally can't walk 100m in the streets without seeing someone smoke.

Now, nothing personal, but if there's one fucking thing I hate, is when non smokers tell me to fucking quit already, and that it's easy, just psychological...just don't do that, stop it. Coming down from a pack a day for a whole year to a cig a month was super fucking hard, and only possible when I didn't have the opportunity to smoke (exam periods, work experience and other periods where I had little time to myslef or with friends). Call it psychological if you want, because sure it is, but it doesn't just work to say hey, I won't smoke again. Been there tried that...So unless i stop going out, stop drinking, stop seeing anyone who smokes, no I can't just quit tomorrow just because I want to.

I smoked for a bit when I was younger. So I'm saying, just quit already. So yes, I'm going to keep saying that because it's true.

Well I guess have fun smoking forever then.

Well fuck.

I actually thought you were a legit member, I like most of your posts normally. I already told you I'm trying to quit. Battling with tobacco addiction is much harder than you think it is (and no, it's not because you smoked a lil that you know how hard it can get, otherwise you wouldn't be suck a dick). So instead of taking a rather insulting tone on the matter, you could shut the fuck up, or support me, you know if you were a good guy...I know it's bad, I want to stop, I working my way to it. So don't be that dick. nobody likes dicks like you.

I was fully addicted to cigarettes for a few years, for maybe 2 years of that was addicted to dip as well. So I'm not saying I smoked a cigarette once every month so I know how you feel, I smoked. I had quit before, and then started again with work ect. I know how it is.

I was only being a dick because I felt you were being kind of a dick from the first post, then in another you assumed I never smoked(which is fine and sensible giving my current situation) and that I couldn't understand how hard it is. Now you're assuming that I barely smoked and still can't understand how hard it is.

Support you? Support you in what? Making excuses and reasons why you can't quit? I'm being realistic. There will always be a reason to smoke. You're working hard, cravings, you have tests, you have a job interview, somebody else lights up on the chairlift, you're drinking, you see somebody smoking, you find an old pack of smokes, somebody offers you a smoke, etc.

Just saying you're legitimately never going to quit if you use those as excuses, wait for a time when the universe is perfect, you have no stress and then quit.

Idk, call be a dick, whatever man. I hope you quit I really do but there's no magic pill or perfect situation. You aren't going to get through school and then all the sudden it's easy. You still have work, you still have bills, you still have stress. If you want to keep smoking, good for you. If you want to quit, good for you. I'm just saying you just have to do it.

Seriously, shia labeouf that shit. If you get to a month, you're already beyond the biggest hurdles of quiting. Take it day by day, week by week but just do it. Remember how hard those initial first days were for you and that if you light up that cig, you'll be right back there again when you get around to quitting. Carry some gum and candy around with you and get used to saying no if anyone offers you a smoke.

It's all up to you.

Well, thanks for this, and sorry, I didn't imagine you were ever a big smoker due to your current allergy. I know too well that the only way is to stop completely, not do it bit by bit, because whenever you feel bad/stressed, you'll just light another thinking what the hell, one won't make a difference. I've set myself to stop completely in September, right now it's just too hard, and a part of me also wants to enjoy a bit more before I quit definitely...I appreciate your long post, I got carried away a bit too yesterday. I didn't know you could get addicted to dip though, tbh I think dip is illegal in france (the irony, a country where 14 year olds can easily buy a pack of smokes)

Yeah it's very addictive. You can get far more nicotine than from cigs. One mountain I worked at we couldn't smoke on the job but could dip, and most of the park crew did. So got into both.

Also I was always chewing on stuff. I used to chew on my shirts when I was a kid and would chew big holes on them. So that was another nice thing about dip. Also I drive a lot long distance. Several 10+ hour drives with some 20+ mixed in as well every once in a while. There was something nice about throwing in some dip and cruising.

I quit a couple times just for the hell of it, then got back into it after a few months but around 4 years ago was like fuck this, I'm quiting.

It's worth it honestly. I still wouldn't mind a dip, but not going to do it ever but I have 0 wish to ever smoke another cigarette.

When it comes down to september you might not want to quit, but if that's the date, then do it regardless. Maybe set a side a few bucks, or use the money that you spent on smokes(if they're at all expensive there) for yourself. Eat some nice food whether you're cooking it for yourself or going out. Def keep gum on hand, a shit ton of gum. Probably buy a bunch before hand and always have some with you. If you feel in any way tempted to smoke just chew some gum. IF you have any hard candy that would be good as well.

If you can get through the first few days, that's the worst of it. After a week you're in pretty good shape. Just have to hang in there and knock out some time.

IF you have to cut down on drinking a bit at the beginning go for it. Or drink inside with friends that don't smoke. IT's just one of those things where there's a good chance it will suck at first, you'll probably was a cig sometimes, even after, but if you don't do it at some point you're never going to do it.

Idk, good luck

I'm a bit late on this but here goes.

Tobacco products are like the sun, and anything else that gives you cancer. It's the exposure and luck. I smoke, and I wouldn't say that the risks are over hyped at all. It's good to know what the fuck might be happening to you, and it's also just about the only motivation to quit that I have.

I don't think people actually understand how nicotine is something that your brain needs to function properly, and when you force induce it into your blood stream your body stops producing it all together. It's a physical addiction which makes it worse than heroin, meth, cocaine ect. (don't quote me on that last part i'm pretty sure those ones are mental)

anyways, if you're going to use tobacco don't dip. I don't care if you're in the cool crowd of jocks or whatever, but dipping is fucked. It'll eat through your fucking lips, throat, mouth, gums ect. and in the past like five years of smoking, I throw up when I dip and I haven't managed to swallow any.

Thanks for the motivational post man. Cutting down on drinking at first is probably thr onky way to go. I'll think it'll get easier as it gets cold, knowing that people will not leave the windows opened, so the smokers will be locked out when they smoke. Well done on quitting too, good to hear people make it.

This thread would be funny if it weren't so sad. Part of me is holding on to the hope that this is a troll post, but I'll leave some choice quotes from the premier medical journal in the world anyway:

"overall mortality among smokers of both sexes in the United States is about three times as high as that among otherwise similar persons who never smoked, and the smokers lose, on average, at least a decade of life. "
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa1211128

"If current smoking patterns persist, tobacco will kill about 1 billion people this century, mostly in low- and middle-income countries."
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMra1308383

Like.. it's almost impossible to overstate how bad smoking is for you. It's literally THE SINGLE LARGEST MODIFIABLE CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD. Quitting smoking has a bigger impact on improving your longevity and quality of life than all other medical interventions combined.

Try doing heroin for any significant amount of time and quitting. The term quitting cold turkey was coined from the goose bumps opiate/opiods induce. Hell even try taking your grandma's vicodin/percs, opana, dilluadid, oxy.. ect for even few weeks and just stop. Pretty much everything you wrote is not physically addictive. Alcohal, Benzodiazapines, and opiates, all cause sever physical dependencys. Guess which 2 outta the 3 can actually cause death from suddenly stopping after heavy use? ... it's not H it's the Alcohal and the benzos ie: xanax, valium, kolonopin, etizolam just to name few. How are people so uneducated about this shit? Maybe I'm overly interested in drugs

I really enjoy cigars, they taste and smell like candy to me, are they really that bad?

All the time yes. Once in a while no. I like smoking wood tip black and milds when I drink or when I'm driving in a non legal marijuana state. My uncle throws me a few cigars once in a while and those are the only real cigars I smoke. Wouldn't be the slightest bit disappointed if I couldn't smoke tobacco ever again. Medical marijuana on the other hand incredibly disappointed. Somebody mentioned anxiety disorders and smoking....guess what one of the reasons the medical marijuana is for?

I just chainsmoke my packs ASAP when I drink don't like waking up with more than 1-2 in my possession but I do like to drink and smoke. Im lucky though and have always been able to quit smokes as long as I had some weed handy.

I think the real question OP is not how bad is tobacco in general but how much worse major brand cigarettes are with all their chemicals than something like American Spirits. THere is seemingly a huge difference and Spirits are nowhere near as bad and similar to weed and its just the shit they put in Marboro and Newports and the like.

I mean a fat blunt isn't going to be that much worse than a fat spliff just due to some tobacco its not that horrible of a plant but the shit they put in cigs are whats sketch.

What I want to know is if cigs like American Spirits really are any "better" for you than the main brands. Everyone knows marlboro and the big brands dump a shit ton of chemicals in their tobacco. American Spirit markets itself as all natural tobacco. But does this mean there is actually no added chemicals, making them any less dangerous for you.

Commercial tobacco contains a lot of additives designed to allow you to inhale more, make it taste differently, etc etc so cutting those out is technically less dangerous, yes. But cutting those out from tobacco does not make tobacco actually not dangerous, not at all.

Burning a normally grown tobacco leaf contains over 7,000 chemicals (such as cyanide, formaldehyde, ammonia) and about 70 carcinogens. Not to mention that nicotine is also classified as a pesticide and burning that is not considered a good thing to do.

Here is a link detailing all of the naturally occurring shit in tobacco smoke:

http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/tobaccocancer/questionsaboutsmokingtobaccoandhealth/questions-about-smoking-tobacco-and-health-cancer-and-health

If commercial tobacco has 7,500 harmful chemicals in it and natural tobacco has 7,000 yes you can argue that it technically is safer but you would not be correct in saying it is actually safe for you since there is a shit ton of naturally occurring chemicals in tobacco that you can't get rid of.

That's what I figured. I guessed they were technically better for you. But still not safe in the the slightest.

What I don't understand is if there is so much harmful extra chemicals in there, why hasn't the government intervened and given tobacco companies restrictions on what they can And can't do.

The government for sure steps in and tries to impede sales, marketing, and adding additional harmful ingredients into tobacco:

http://betobaccofree.hhs.gov/laws/

http://www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm246129.htm

Bottom line is it's simply a HUGE business and people want to smoke it. Hopefully one day people will just see it for what it is and stop, but that's probably never going to happen.

When did I say I was a rig pig? I'm not a rig pig and that's whats so exciting. I work 30 minutes away from my house for a gracious amount of money for my current certifications, in a pretty dead job market. I work in road construction, not at the rigs. I'll be working through september and I've been working since the snow melted. I landscape, I assist mechanics, I help the owner paint stairs, I drive water trucks on a work site. I have a job that can support a small family lol, not comfortably but I've done the math and I could pay all my parents bills, insurance, ect (except for winter where I do nothing at all) and through the winter I get on employment insurance so I can ski and still make more than I would with a job at a gas station, fast food ect.

Suck a dick I've got my shit figured out for the next while and I'm probably half your age. Stop arguing with people online, old washed up goof. and off first guess you work at telus.

Your a moron someone with his background with a reputation for not being lazy means he'll always have a well paying job.

Hes young enough too that he can stop working full time, get a degree, have some me time while he gets t and be young enough to not be old and creepy, and get hired making a shit load immediately when he graduates because jobs will like seeing someone get their hands dirty and has experience outside a classroom.

Tobacco is cool Im glad I was able to bum smokes all weekend at a wedding and not buy pack. Now I can purchase and smoke what I want next couple weeks of summer pounding brews on the beach is usually a good time for some butts.

Horrendous. I'm fully addicted to smoking now, and it's a big old pain in the ass. I get cranky and pissed off if I don't have one for a couple days. But yeah my fitness levels have gone down heaps, wake up with a rank cough. It's just shit.

So yeah dn't start smoking people.
