my home hill made snow just for ski instructor training (it opens mid-late december) and we had to practice teaching techniques on a 3" x 8' x 10' patch of snow on a beginner trail, while the snowboarders got a 200 foot long trail with little jumpy things made by the snowmakers. so they got to pop some 1s whil we were stuck on our patch: bs. Once the snowboarders were done, we got the big slope, but the stupid head of ski school acted like we were his class because half of the teen instructors didnt even know how to ski. so we skied (how can we call this skiing?) 20' down and lined up like a class. meanwhile, the adult instructors trainees are being taught how to ski backwards (switch) for their real lessons (i found out that my job is to pickup 4-7 yr. olds when they fall on the bunny hill). i tried not to laugh at them falling every time, while I was being taught how to wedge. wtf? i need the money and i get 10$/hr, but should i quit?

i do the same thing man, this will be my 2nd year,it is a decent job free seasons pass, don't quit i'd say, becaue the kids are the future of skiing and all last year the lil ones were asking me why i ski backwards and why i have two tips on one ski, totaly worth it, the pay isn't bad tips a amazing stick with it man!

i never went the instructor route. skiing is what i do for fun and i can only get to the hill a certain number of times per year so i want to rip, not babysit. sounds like you're in school, can you handle an afterschool job and still have time to ride on the weekends? thats what id do.

your attitude sucks bro...

either deal with it or quit

i taught for many year...through all of high school and had some fun times

so either sack up and be a big boy

or

take your to cool for school 'tude home with your broke ski passless ass

ski instructers are a malignant growth draining the life out of the entire ski community. what makes them the omnipotent force to tell everyone how they should ski? like you said, most of them don't even know how to ski themselves. quit as soon as you possibly can, and sever all ties to the ski school immediately. try to save what little integrity you still have. and while you are at it, try to get all of your friends to quit as well. good day.

my friend did that last year and is doing it again this year just stick with it after the gay training the job is straight u just get to ski for free

I liked teaching. Once 4 - 7 year olds learn how to stop and turn all you do is ski with them. The first few hours are a pain in the ass, but most of them pick it up, and start going faster and faster. And they talk about how awesome Spiderman and Spongebob Squarepants are on the lift ride up.

As for not being able to ski, you're probably watching the wrong instructors.

Being a good skier is not a prerequisite for teaching 7 year olds. If you want to get to the higher certifications, you have to be able to carve like a racer, ski moguls like a mogul skiing dude, and still be able to snowplow and skid around like an intermediate. I hear the PSIA made it a requirement that you be able to ride the pipe to get one of the certifications last year (not the Park & Pipe specific one either).

all godd man you just got too deal with the shit stuff until you work your way into coaching a feestyle group. good fun once you are there.

yeah id want to ski instruct but id suck to have to take care of crying 6 year olds. but id be cool if you could teach people who were actually good and teach park stuff, but you probably have to instruct for awhile before you can.

yeah, deffinetly stick with it. Im starting my second year with *karma* up there, and one thing you'll find pretty quick is that probly all the young guys in your ski-school are thinkin' the same thing as you. And yeah, the tips really do make the job.

Look at it objectively.

If its gonna significantly decrease your time on the snow skiing to have fun then drop it.

But the perks are good. You might be able to get proform deals on equipment, free pass, make some friends, and you'll be making some money.

How far do you live from the mt? 10 bucks an hour is decent, but if you gotta drive...

yeah if i could do it like once a week on the weekends then id do it as long as im not teaching a bunch of kids to pie wedge all day long.

this is my first year as "assistant instructor" because im not old enough to actually have a job so im doing it volunteer, it gets me the volunteer hours for school so its good to get it over with, i start this sunday at grouse mtn vancouver

Beeing an instructor is a good job I think. The problem about it is all the time you loose. You almost never ski on your level.

Thats why I wont be working at all this seson..

i personally love ski intructing, I love seeing kids improve and have fun skiing. yeah I found the first day or two of trainning bullshit and thougth I was better than that shit. But it got better as we got into more technical stuff than wedges. Like rotation and counter rotation and trasition. Im a much better technical skier because of it.

Im teaching skiing for 8 years, and i cant get enough of it.As long as i can pay for the tickets with the money i earn teaching im fine

im an instructor myself. think about what you just said. how are instructors draining the life out of the entire ski industry? we are introducing thousands of people to the sport and teaching them how to ski safely and to have fun. most of the people that we teach have never skied in their lives before, they have no clue how to ski, ride lifts, or put on skis for that matter. if they go and and try to learn themselves, i doubt they'll be very successful and they will probably quit skiing. as instructors, part of our job is to ensure that the customers have a fun time so that they'll come back and ski again.

we're not an omnipotent force telling everyone how they should ski. organizations such as the CSIA and PSIA have been around for a long time. they are full of people who have a passion for the sport of skiing and are willing to devote their time to share this passion and to teach others. using their years of expierence, all ski schools have developed ways to teach people how to ski properly. although everyone has slight variations in the way that they ski, the basic technique is the same.

i think that most instructors know how to ski, otherwise they would have never passed the course in the first place. there is a certain skill level that you have to be to teach (although its not very high to be a level 1)

and for the creator of the thread, i would reccomend staying with it. i love instructing and its a good way to have fun, and make some money. at my hill, private lessons pay $22/hr per person, so i try to get as many return privates as possible

Be a chair lift operator. I was one for 4 years (had to quit to go to university). Best ski years in my entire life!

You get paid well or worst average. People you get to work with are all chill. Lots of party's. Work is nice. You get to watch people fall. You get a free season pass. Dope.

Well I worked less than I was on snow. Working the day on weekends being on snow during the night and the week.

AND you're not freezing your ass when its cold outside!

I taught then coached for about 10-years...I ran the freeride program at one of the major Tahoe ski resorts and had the priviledge of being paid to ski with some of the best 14-17 years olds in the country, i got paid toi cut luft lines on powder days, have ski vans lick us up from BC runs, travel to different resorts for contests, ability to request new features in the terrain park, access and budget for groomer time...to sum it up, my job was the dream job for my type of skiing 17$ an hour to kill it every weekend with an amped up bunch of rippers, many of whom now grace the walls of your bedrooms....

So all you haters oiut there are pretty much 100% clueless

Yo i didnt read every commnet, someone might have said this but, most skiers i know, even "freeskiers", if you want to call them that, have had some kind of instruction from someone, you're not born skiing parallel most the time, so some kids don't have parents who know how to ski, someones got to do it...... don't bash on the ski instructors man

Dude, stick with it. I've been teaching for four years. Started out with those fucking little kids and now I teach freestyle. Last week I taught a clinic to all the old people on jumps and rails. I've got a bunch of little 9-14 year olds. Fucking Awesome. The best one is throwing switch unnatural 180's and 3's. Plus they let me have a pretty big say on the park set up. So if you want to, just suck it up and things will get better. I fucking hated the job when I started out.

Man, you need to shut your face. First of all, I guarantee that most ski instructors are better skiers than you, and I dare you to leave Ohio and come out ski any of the people I train with.

Also, you're probably one of those people that bitch because there are no shops around your area that have cool stuff, or there is all these gaper snowboarders in the park. Well fuck off, we're trying to get more people to ski while your dumbass is trying to clown.

Besides, PSIA is working up a Park and Pipe progression that has instruction on park etiquite as well as jumping, spins and rails. What the fuck are you doing? We're trying to make people better and you're just being a bitch.
