So if I voted a 1...

If you tried to cheat the system and be a dick, then yes it did get thrown out.
Just read the article of the contest rules, there isn't a need for a thread with such a basic question.

likely what they did was if a video was rated as 7, 8,7,9,10,1, 8,9 then they would take out the 1, because obviously it was someone just trying to drop the score.

then should they take out the ten also cause that person is trying to raise the score? see wat i mean? NS is super bias.

They said over the next few days they were banning all the people who gave out 1's. That sucks bro..

i kinda do see where your coming from, why would they have a 1 if we can't use it

however i personally thought none deserved a 1. i gave out 6 or 7 at the lowest.

is it really that hard to understand? if you gave out all 1s, and one or two 10s, then ALL your scores get tossed out...

Then it isn't an open vote. and that is very subjective. It is a matter of opinion if a member is cheating or not then.

dude come on. its pretty fucking obvious if you rate one vid a 10 and the rest a 1. and why are you even arguing this? did you do that? no? then stop being a little bitch.

I just checked your votes, they were all seen as legitimate and none were eliminated.
Please everyone stop whining about this

But then again, you should be able to vote as you want.

IF someone had made an alias, or several aliases, and then tried to cheat the system by voting under each alias, then by all means throw it out.

But members should have the right to vote according to their preferences. There were some entries which I though deserved a 1, and some that I thought deserved 10.

Instead, people are forced to give arbitrarily higher votes, for fear of their votes not counting at all.

Not necessarily. If you used a range of scores between 1 and 10 there would be no problem rating a couple of them 1. It is only if it is obvious you are only trying to push a couple up and the rest down by only using 1's and 10's (especially if you rate all but one 1) that there would be a problem (or so I assume).

no, you're an idiot. there's never going to be a contest in which only one video gets a 10 and the rest of the entries get a 1. you're lying to yourself if you say, "yeah thats fair". even if you do believe it was right then you're just retarded and everyone knows that having retards as judges is bad. how is this so hard to understand and such a big deal with you?

Or how about this, as a refinement.

5 represents perfect indifference. Benefit from voting is zero. So you don't bother voting for them. You only vote at preference extremities, where U from voting is max'd. So you vote only when you have strong preferences. You dole out 1's and 10's. You punish videos you really dislike with a 1, and reward videos you like with a 10. You are indifferent around others.

Surprisingly, I don't think the NS-JOSS voting system will be gracing my next paper on Rational Choice Theory or electoral system engineering, but it's fun to play Devil's Advocate nonetheless.

We absolutely leave votes of 1 if they are deserved. Basically what we look for is someone who voted 2-3 videos a 10 and then the rest 1's. This is someone who is trying to pad the vote.
People will sometimes think they're tricky and vote 2 videos 10, 1 a 2 and the rest ones... or something like that... but its really obvious. The only way to have a vote that isn't suspicious is to make sure all your votes are fair.
Some will be 1s, some will be 10s, but the rest of teh videos will be fairly evenly spread between 2 and 9. Having a spread like this is what a regular user judging videos the way they feel, vs. trying to rig the contest.
Its easy to spot, and easy to eliminate those who are looking to rig the contest.

I read an interesting idea in another thread, that instead of a 1-10 scale vote for each user, allow each user 3 votes to hand out to whomever they chose from the entries? This might help eliminate the number of "cheating" votes?

I do like that idea... we're completely re-writing the contest system, and have a bunch of different voting methods that we're trying against real data from the current system.
We're also trying various cheat voting eliminators. 3 votes per person is great if there's only 3 winners, but doesn't work if we have a huge contest like a slopestyle where we need top 20.
This thing is getting re-written from the ground up, and since we can manually see how the contests should have turned out, we can experiment with automated methods, different systems, etc, and come up with something thats perfect.
The bottom line is that the contests have hit huge popularity this year, which we couldn't be happeir about. However, when something gets this popular, and we start to have such big prizes on the line, we've got to upgrade to deal with the load.
Going to be sweet.

Oh, I'm sorry, instead of trying to stimulate an informed debate, I'll just give a typical NS response then;

OMG TOM WALLISCH FULL TILTS CHAD'S GAP BLAH BLAH, SOME OTHER SHIT TALL TEES, HEY GUYZ I'M NEW HERE WHAT IS STEEZE WHAT SKIS SHOULD I GET WANT TO BUY JIBERISH IN LIKE TEN EX ELL MIKE JONES LOL FAUNT BLAH BLAH ZOMG I HATE NEWBS I SAW A KID WITH AFTERBANGS WHO WAS SHIT YEAH LINE SKIS WHERES MY SAGA I ORDERED IT LIKE 2 DAYS AGO AND ITS NOT HERE YET TITS OR GTFO REPOST SEARCHBAR.

You complain about stupid posts, yet refuse to post anything constructive when people are debating the issue at hand.

This is one thing we're considering.
We're also adding a bunch of different formats and features like restricted upload periods with no voting. In addition, we're experimenting with different voting formats. We might leave the ability to choose voting formats for different contests, or allow things like selected judging panels.
We're also working on some mathematical formulas to normalize the 1-10 voting, to reduce the effect of someone just trying to rig the contest. In some way, shape or form, I hope to keep the 1-10, as it allows us to run things like our online slopestyle contests, which might have many people go into a semi or finals round.
Remember the broadband uberopen? Chance to qualify for the US Open.
Under Armour Slopestyle video open? Chance to win like $5k.
Both of those wouldn't work with a thumbs up thumbs down type deal because it wouldn't necessarily rank people for the qualifying rounds properly.
We'll get this dialed. The key is that we have so much participation and passion about the contests - that means we can get more of them with better and better prizes. Few tweaks to the contest system are barely as hard as getting so much interest in them.
Take into account that these things have been around since the winter of 2005, and its only now that the popularity has skyrocketed to such extreme levels.

It would be nice if for certain contests the 1-10 voting system could continue to be used but for other contests like this it would be nice if you got to just pick one person (or in this case 3). I didn't really like the 1-10 system for the JOSS contest. I feel like there would be less hating (low rating) because you'd simply be voting for the person or people you want to win.

Also, I think for future video contests like this, there should always just be a period for submissions that is set and then a set time for voting that comes later. It's not fair when voting starts immediately because people are yet to see all the other videos. At least that part of the JOSS voting was spot on.
For the KOS voting however submissions were opened and voting started right away. (Yes I'm aware the voting was all through youtube).Only like 6-7 people had their videos up right away and those ones were featured in the front page article on NS. Now this immediately gives all those videos a major advantage. Many of the later submissions were never added to the article or if they were, it wasn't until after the initial few days of the article being up. Little things like that make a big difference.

i usually only vote 1's or 10's. because if i come across a video thats rated 9.3 and i think it deserves a 7 or 8 then ill vote 1 because voting 7 wouldnt change shit

That's the dumbest thing i have heard in a while. You should know better than that...you are supposed to vote it what you think it should be to help its overall average rating... not trying to lower or raise its score with 1's and 10's

haha but it's not. your influencing the video in a way thats not the average of what people think it deserves then.

in other words, just because you think it should'nt be rated so high. Your not all of ns.
