So I went to jail last night...

...somehow, cant remember much, but this morning when I woke up all bruised and sore they told me I was being accused of assault. I got bailed out but I was supposed to stay until Monday, and go to court that same day. Instead now I have court on March 17th and until then I cannot posses nor consume any alcohol or drugs or im going back to jail, no bail. So, im not American and I dont know much about your judiciary system, but what happens at court? Do I get fined or anything? Is assault something serious? And should I contact a lawyer? this is maine btw.

any help appreciated.

that sucks bro, but yeah man i dont know your story about what happened, but if you are going to be charged for assault i would for sure contact a lawyer, you cant really represent yourself in these situations. depending on the severity of the event and your previous record will take a lot into account the punishment you will receive, you could receive nothing, a fine probation community service and possibly a short sentence in jail, but if you are on ns, im sure it wasnt that bad, so you shouldnt have to much to worry about. goodluck man.
 
Wow that's fucked up. Definitely doesn't sound right to me.

But assault sounds bad but sometimes it's not a big deal. All assault means is that you gave the intention to harm someone. You didn't actually hurt anyone. If you did it would be battery.

That's why you can't spit at a cop, it's considered assault. If you even lunge a little forward at someone it could be considered assault.

So you really aren't that bad off. Make yourself look respectable and try to find a decent lawyer if you have money. Best of luck bro.
 
Im not an american, but here are some tips and advices:

1-Get a lawer, he will tell you what to do, how to act and tips on getting yourself out of this situation

2-be on your best behavior, attend court, talk nicely and act like your innocent, you may get away with temporary insainity.

3-contact eanyone you have been around that night, they will tell you what happend

Dude thats so fucked up but you should get a lawyer for lawyer for sure it will make everything a lot easier

yea deffinalty get a lawyer and find out what actually happened so when u go to court your not hearing it for the first time.

Get a lawyer- they are expensive but nothing is worse than an misdemeanor, let alone a felony on your permanent record.

Very slight chance you go to jail. Im guessing probation and fines and good behavior for a few years as well as some community service or something.

that was my first thought when i red that you're not an american. Where are you from, and how did you get here? vacation, immigration, education etc..?
 
I think I might have "assaulted" either a doc or a security guard. But there were like 5 men trying to drag me somewhere against my will (and yeah i was drunk) and I wrestled back, but I am a girl...I mean come on, assault? They wanted to take me to the hospital I believe, for being drunk, when I wasnt even causing any trouble and I am freakin 21.
 
yeah find out exactly what happened but thats bullshit if your a girl and they charged you with assault for just resisting someone trying to bring you somewhere against your will, america is retarded i had to go to a hospital once when i was wasted but that might have been legitimate because i blew a .4 at the hospital
 
You'll be fine. Contact the local Town court where you were arrested and you can get a lawyer for free. They might not be as competent as a hired representative but in your case, the severity sounds minimal so the free lawyer should be able to reduce your charge to disorderly conduct (violation) or even completely dropped. About a year ago, I pushed a kid and 2 guys I knew visiting my college beat the shit out of the kid. 3 of us were arrested on a Class C Felony for "gang assault"...conviction lands 5-10 years in prison...yea fucking tell me about it. Got it dropped to harassment with the acquisition of a good lawyer, but its the court/cops job to charge you as high as they can, fucking pricks. Good luck and just contact the local representatives if you cannot afford a personal rep.

My friends dad was born in England, he has lived here for over THIRTY years. 4 years ago he got arrested for weed, less than one joint. He paid his fines and did everything the court asked of him. Then this year they 'reopened' the case and put him in jail for 3 weeks. Luckily the whole town went fucking nuts over it because everyone knows him and he's a great guy. After the public pressure the dropped the new case against him.

so yea if a guy from England who has lived his entire adult life can be threatened with deportation over half a joint, I think its a def possibility for a violent crime like assault to result in deportation, hopefully you'll be fine tho
