Why there isn't a digital camera that has about a 4gb hard drive like the Ipod mini that was about the same size? Wouldn't it make sense to make something like that so you could have about 100 times the storage space?

I'm no tech wizard, but I'd imagine that there's a lot more shit besides a hard drive that has to fit inside a camera, whereas an iPod doesn't need much besides the hard drive and an earphone jack. It's a lot harder to convert light into electrical charges than it is to decompress bytes and run them through a digital-analog converter.

Even if there is a lot more space needed for camera stuff, just slap the space taken on for an ipod mini onto the back of a camera, and you have it. It would add like 1/2 inch to the back of the camera, and obviously make it heavier, but you get your 4 megs, and people would obviously dig it. How much memory is in digital cameras now? Seems like somebody should have come up with this a long time ago.

the biggest problem with putting an actual hard drive in a camera is... it is mechanical and has moving parts. a camera is moved around a lot! all those movements will wear very hard on even the best hard drives. that is why solid state media (flash, smart media etc) is used in cameras. the ipods and other hard drive mp3 players will have problems especially with those who are not careful with them.

toshiba actually makes a 2 gig mini hard drive that will fit into compact flash card slots and require no external power. They're really fuckin expensive. I dont see why you would need more than 512 or so. How long do you go between uploads to you computer really? And you dont actually need to take your photos at 5 megapixel. 2 is plenty for what most people want, which is a picture. You can get thousands of 2 megapixel pictures on a couple of 512 cards. It would really just be impracticle in my opinion.

you can get up to 8Gig flash cards for some cameras now, they super expensive, but they are available.

life is too short to have any regrets
