So, I plan on messing around with Unreal Engine 4

I plan on messing around with Unreal Engine 4 and I'm going to be building a new computer around June. Thing's I'm trying to decide on to make things a bit more cost effective. I'm not sure I want to go with either the i5 or i7. I'm thinking quad-core might be the way to go, but there's also the hyper threading for the i5 which makes the dual core act like a quad core. I'm going to most likely need about 8gb ram.

For the video card I'm not 100% on, but they recommend these on the UE4 website: NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series or higher.

Mother boards I haven't even looked at because I want to figure all the other stuff out before I even look at them. haha Then I will look at computer cases after I figure the rest out.

Doesn't need a disc drive right away, but sooner or later will probably end up getting a blueray drive or something.

Hard drive: I plan on getting a decent sized SSD and another HDD for massive storage. I'm kind of tempted to get a hybrid drive though just to start then I can always expand my storage.

So far I can only think that NCIX.com is where I'm going to go to pick up all the parts, but if anyone else knows where I might want to check out to get stuff for cheaper. I feel I should also clarify I'm not opposed to ordering from a bunch of different websites if it works out to be cheaper that way.

In total trying to definitely keep it under $1000.

I realize it might be close to impossible to build a really good computer for under $1000, but if I can get a bunch of stuff to start out with an ok computer(just enough to get things up and running) and even slowly upgrade it I'm fine with that.

I'm not getting this to just do game design either I plan on doing video edit's and stuff as well and I also like to have an OK gaming computer(I'm kind of hoping it's at least good enough to maybe run oculus in the future).

TL;DR?

Looking for suggestions on building or buying a cheaper upgradeable desktop computer for running Unreal Engine 4 so I can play around with it and maybe make some fun games. Trying to keep it under $1k(to start off with). I also do a bit of work with photoshop and plan on doing a little bit of video editing. Also I wouldn't be opposed to it being able to run oculus in the near future.

any suggestions?

Things I have forgotten to add. I would like it to be able to run 2-4 monitors at once when I'm done.

Also I live in BC Canada so if anyone know's of a cheap website in Canada I would prefer that so shipping doesn't kick my wallets ass.

I would recommend looking onto Newegg.com

They often have bundles for bare bones or even update kits for computers that can vary from $200 to up to your price limit.

I am not the biggest fan of Intel and more of a AMD fan myself. There are Hexa and Octo cores out on the market right now for cheaper than the I-series and even though the cores can't be utilized to their fuller potential, it gives you the chance for utilization in the future.

I would just say go to Newegg and check out what is available in their bundles.

Also for Hard drive, I would say go full on SDD and HDD since I've heard mixed things about hybrids.

Thanks! Yah I was thinking the same about SSD and HDD. I was just thinking for the first bit having a hybrid, just not sure about failure rate. I'm going to definitely be looking into that stuff before I buy(Thank god for customer reviews!!! hahaha)

I used to be a huge AMD fan, but I have been hearing/reading a lot of good things about the i series.

Let me be clear, Intel is a fantastic company. Amazing track record and stellar in all aspects. I just personally enjoy AMD since they are cheaper for what they are and have a higher ratio of Bang to buck.

You can get an 84W or even 100W Hexacore processor for anywhere between 100-229 dollars. Octocore are in the same price range.

I also would like to make a recommendation if you are going to be OCing or running heavy graphics in general. You should look into water cooler systems, it sounds like you are making a monster and it might be a good investment.

this is way above your budget but this gives you a good idea of what characteristics a good game editing computer has.

also, please make a thread posting your work once your done.

Kind of a thread jack, but how do I even start looking at watercooling systems? I just have no idea where to start. One of those corsair closed loop things?

For water coolant systems, you can pick from a variety of systems. Typically speaking, the closed loop systems by Corsair are the most widely used and most commonly seen. I have seen a few full systems utilize an amazing coolant system with cooled water with cooper pipes. I saw one without a tower and just decided to use a Fish tank, filled it with Mineral oil and put in all the components into it. Doesn't ruin any components and keeps it crazy cool.

Also for temp in general, I've heard some experience with different CPU pastes having a major effect on CPU temp.

Unless you get some ridiculous CPU cooling system do not get an i7. You will never use the full potential of an i7. i5 will get you where you need to go just fine.

Is your $1000 including a monitor? If so, I would suggest you go with AMD, you will still get all the power you could ever need (I have an FX 8350 and it is a beast). You also can't beat the 8 cores, I know they are all not real cores, but the multi-tasking is way better on an AMD than intel.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll be posting what I decide to go with. I have a lot of information to sift through at this point. haha

As for the monitor question I pretty much have everything I could ever need for monitors.. lol I might want to get a cool 3D or one of those fancy curved monitors one day but until then I have a 32" TV I can use as a monitor or another monitor that's 22" and another that's 24". Plenty of choices for HD monitors. I might even eventually run all three when I get the space for it. lol

A lot of the guys speaking here are saying rookie things and don't know much about computers. So here's a great build under 1000.

Everything on that list I have either had great experience with or have known someone that had good experience with it.

My reasoning:

The intel i5 3570k is an amazing cpu that I've been using as my daily driver for over 2 years and has been overclocked for a year and a half at a solid 4.2 Ghz which beats pretty much any cpu under 400 for only 250. I have never had a problem with heat or any problems in general with it.

I went with the hyper 212 evo since it's a cheap but one of the best aftermarket air coolers on the market. For only 30 dollars, you can't go wrong there. It'll keep your computer cold and if you decide to overclock, the stock cooler won't hold you back.

I choose the ASRock Z77 extreme4 for a few reasons. I have the model just under it which works fantastic and have heard good things about this board. The bois is incredibly easy to overclock and gives you every little detail you need to know about how your computer is running.

Gave you 16gb of corsair vengeance ram since this ram is freaking amazing. Runs cool all the time and my friends and I have never had a problem using this ram and haven't heard anything bad about it.

Choose the 850 Evo since they have a long lifespan and have super fast speeds. It's only 120gb but that's enough for a boot drive and 1-2 programs plus a project file. I also gave you a Seagate barracuda 2tb HDD since it's fast and very reliable and also a great deal for the price.

I choose the EVGA gtx 750 Ti FTW acx video card since it's a pretty fast and quiet card. It should give you the horsepower you need for games in the future and you can take advantage of it's CUDA cores.

I choose a case that imo looks aesthetically clean and classy and is very functional quiet. It has a side window that lets you show off your sick pc to your friends and allows you to see the beautiful parts inside.

I picked out the Seasonic 550w semi modular psu since it will give you a pretty clean look as well as be very reliable since it is the most important part of your pc. It gives you enough headroom so you don't need to worry about wattage.

I decided to just throw in a dvd drive since it was cheap.

You'll need to pick out your own operating system. I recommend windows 8.1 since it runs super smooth and has much better cyber security than windows 7. I know some people hate the interface of it but after every boot up just select desktop (it will eventually do it on its own) and it will act like windows 7 on steroids.

Hope that helps!

UE4 is sooo dope and so easy to use, you gonn have fun ;) I have a shitty i5 and a shitty gfx card (OCed it though) and I have no problem using it and testing out my projects, running the engine won't be a problem at all.
