“The sky is falling” A story about a young chicken named Chicken Little. Chicken little believes the sky is falling after an acorn falls on her head. This story has a moral and that moral is not too assume disaster after something insignificant happens. Unfortunately this scenario is happening in the media, society, and people’s minds. What we have is an inconvenient lie. A lie that humanity is greatly as risk to an extreme climate that would cause catastrophes of biblical proportions. The reason there is so much fear is because of a one sided argument caused by the media and the scientific community. When comparing the facts it is obvious that little if any warming has been caused by human activity. I obtained all of my facts from the book “Climate of Fear: Why We Shouldn’t Worry about Global Warming” and from the Glenn Beck television show on CNN. Humans only produce 10 % of global Co2 emissions. Natural causes of co2 such as the oceans and volcanoes produce much more. Co2 is not even a major greenhouse gas; water is the most abundant greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. The media has portrayed Cars and factories as the cause for global warming. You can rest assured that very little if any of the warming over the past hundred years has been our fault.
The world has cooled and warmed frequently in the past. Lake sediment samples suggest the world might of warmed 16 degrees Fahrenheit in 50 years at the end of that last major ice age about 12,000 years ago. A paleoclimatologist suggests that Polar Regions of the earth may have been 36 degrees colder than they are now during the pre Cambrian period. During the Mesozoic the world was 18 degrees warmer than it is now. Back when man was moving out of Africa about 130,000 years ago Europe was 2-5 degrees warmer than it is now. According to our record keepings since 1880 the average world temperature has raised about 1 degree. 1 degree is what everyone is so worried about. In the last 127 years there have been many ups and downs in temperature. The temperature rose from 1880 and peaked in the 50s and the temperatures began to cool. As a matter of fact climate change was an issue in the 70’s, except it wasn’t warming they were worried about it was cooling. Some scientists were expecting the world to go into another ice age. There were articles in TIME and many other popular publications about global cooling. The temperature then started to rise but something strange happened, the warming stopped in 1998 and the temperatures slightly cooled. After the last 127 years of tracking temperatures you would think they would know by now that the averages can change by the decade. A big reason why the world is warmer now than it was in 1880 is because the earth was coming out of a small ice age. If you have ever seen the painting “sunrise at Trenton” you may note that the river the men are floating down is jammed with ice, this is the Delaware River in Delaware, this river is at fairly low latitude and almost at sea level. Where this scene is set the river never sees ice chunks as large as those depicted in the painting. It is said that the northeast received snow in the summer during this small ice age. There is so much evidence that when looked upon it is clear that the climate changes frequently. In Al Gores movie he shows maps of Florida and Manhattan being flooded but the truth is that the IPCC says this is very unlikely. Please if you watch Al Gores movie notice how many times he says the word “if”, and also please examine the manipulated graphs. The evidence strongly suggests that global warming is actually just a natural process of the earth.
There are many people who claim that warming of the earth is something that will hurt agriculture. That does not make any sense to me, because if anything warmer temperatures would mean longer growing seasons. Most places that are already hot but grow crops would not even be affected. The regions that would receive the most effect would be high latitude regions where there is a very short growing season. If the growing season increased by even a week that would greatly increase our quality of life. The warming is actually not even increasing the high temperatures but the low nighttime early morning temperatures. This means that the likeliness of frost destroying crops in low latitude regions is much lower. Many politicians and celebrities that are not even scientists have made global warming seem like a horrible problem that will lead to our demise when in fact it is just part of a natural cycle that actually has benefits for society. Some alarmists believe that this climate would ruin industry and hurt world economies. Even if weather were to have a negative effect on business only 2% of the GDP in the United States is weather dependant. Those businesses are agriculture, fishing, and forestry. The warming is probably beneficial for that small amount of the GDP. Most industry is immune to weather and our warmer temperatures will most likely benefit those that are not immune. Because of warmer temperatures we are able to take better advantage of land and spread people out meaning better qualities of life and less land being overused. Colder climates of the past have led to many people freezing and starving. Colder climates cripple food supplies. Colder temperatures are known to spread disease. That is why wintertime is when colds and the flu are more common problems. During the black plague Europe was cold and wet. The diminishing food supply, and cold temperatures were helping the disease spread within households. In Al Gores movie he goes on about how many heat deaths there will be in the future. The convenient truth is that heat doesn’t kill nearly as many people as cold does. Very few deaths are even caused by the weather. But there are fewer cold deaths per capita thanks to slightly warmer temperatures and better heating systems for homes. And for the record the devastating tsunami was not weather related it was caused by a tectonic shift in the ocean floor. I had to tell you that fact because there are actually people including celebrities who are actually uneducated enough to make the assumption that our pollution caused that tsunami.
An inconvenient truth is that a warmer climate could harbor diseases better, but that brings me to my point of action. I believe that the world’s governments should not spend money on plans such as Kyoto to stall the apparent global warming catastrophe that is to come in the next century, but focus on the issues that are really important like getting clean water to all of the world’s people. This clean water would help to fight diseases. I believe we should be trying to find cures for diseases such as malaria and aids. We should be spending time and money looking into agriculture. I believe that the real reason Alarmists such as Al Gore and many public figures spread their scientific dogma is because they are looking for a way to make the conservatives in America look bad. Many conservatives are supported by oil companies, so the Alarmists are trying to make these politicians look like the horsemen of the apocalypse. One day we will run out of oil but as many wise men have said “necessity is the mother of all innovation”
So as I leave you here hopefully with more open minds, may I remind you that the evidence shows that the climate change is just a natural process of the earth’s climate. And also remember that over the last 100 or so years when the mercury has risen by 1 degree our quality of life, knowledge, agriculture, art, science, population, and many other signs of progress have increased many times more than they did in the previous thousands of years.
