Snowboarding vs Skiing

Will Snowboarding still be around in 20 years?

I think it is becoming to skiing like what bodyboarding is to surfing, an excuse for not being able to do the real thing. It has no advantages except that it's easier. I think it will gradually disappear as talents turn to skiing.

Having read that, i think most of what you said was bollocks.

We should thank snowboarders, they had a big hand in the whole newschool movement they invented so many jumps that we have simply transfered to skiing (e.g. off axis spinning) snowboarding has forced skiing into what it is now.

And as for it being easy. my friend it is far from it, i would go as far to say it is on a par if not sometimes harder than skiing.

Ive snowboarded for 3 years befor switching back to skiing when i was 18 and what ever people say snowboarding is hard.

Snowboarding will always be around and skiing will be chasing its tail for the rest of time.

You are dumb!

lanemeyers your looking for chicks on a male dominated web site, you might have better luck picking up some scrump if you skied.

p.s. I don't usually say things like that but come on you want girls, go to a bar or something not a damn ski site. By the way p----- isn't really like warm apple pie, someday you just might find that out.

skiing did get help from snowboarding , but its not all from them, people were doin tricks on skis before snowboards, i know that, i was around then...

skiing isnt snowboarding......

Snowboarding would never have started if it weren't for skiing. Thank the freestylers that added a little factor to areials in their free time called 'style'.

jibbing probably wouldnt be around if it wasnt for snowboarding.

skiing has been around longer than snowboarding, tricks on skis have been around longer than snowboarding, but snowboarding brought a new culture, and a new lifestyle that newschool skiing has adapted as well. Both sports are badass, both require as much skill, time, patience, and hard work. Snowboarding and skiing are almost the exact same now with only the physical differences.

blah blah blah, whatever. I'm tired of posts that are facing two sports agaisnt each other. who cares. if you ski, then ski. if you do something else do that. who cares if boarding is around in the future. as long as people keep sliding down the hill there will be skiing and boarding, and whatever new craze hits the slopes.

I perosall yahve tried snowboardign and didnt think it wa sgreta or bad i jsut love ksiing and neway i ski with 3 boarders and 2 other skiers and we get along liek nuttin it really doe shelp progression for both sports really. We do owe them some shyt htough they put us back on the map

Ohh and snowboarding isnt a fad wher ejsut gonn ahve to get used to it and love our one board buddys..haha

Id like to give NS.COM the greatest toast honor of all the gold medal 40 toast

Yes we did take stuff from snowboarding, but it would have happened if snowboarding never happened either.

I mean think, all the young punks who wanted to do tricks just happened to be on boards. If tehre wasnt such thing as snowboarding, they would all still be on skis doing the same tricks.

Having said that, boarding will always be around.

this thread reminds me of that 'which came first the chicken or the egg' question...

however, snowboarding has gotten most of the media attention and in turn has helped newschool skiing get more recognition.

but nicely crossed up skis flying through the air look a lot better than just a board.

just my thoughts. like it or hate it, i don't care.

I really think that snowboarders and skiers shouldn't fight over what sport is beter it is all a personal peference.....i like skiing........but i have nothing against snowboarding....we have to share the same terrain parks so we should lean how to respect the other sport.

i thnk that snowboarding is good to the community, its gonna stay around too, boarding is the thing that all the stupid kids wanna try at school, only the real ppl ski, i like that feeling knowing that anyone who skiis, really does love it, not some stupid who wants to be cool and trys boarding

i second that alpentalik

THE SPRINKLER: get butt naked and then do a 1260 while taking a piss, i expect this trick to win many comps this coming season.

man, when i lived back east in Virginia, at my local hill, there were no snowboarders at all...this was of course like a lot of years ago, but we were still doin our thing even though snowboarding hadn't caught on yet...so i agree that snowboarding progresses NEWschool skiing like off axis spins, but lets leave it at that, because fuck, we need roots as well...lets not give them all the credit here...

i agree with gauntlet1260. at my school snowboarding is a big fad, but there are a couple kids who are ligit and i ride with them lots. we all push each other to do better so one or two boards doesn't make a big difference.

Hey this was meant to be a scientific enquiry. No one is denying that SBing has had a +influence on skiing. I ve been skiing since I was 4 but my first backflip I did on a SB. I maintain though that SBing is ezr than Skiing and thats one of its main attractions, although with fat skis and all even that is becoming a more mute point. That is why I was asking whether it'll still be around. SBing (to me) is only fun in powder or park/pipe. Skiing is more or less always fun(i.e also in moguls, hardpack) and you don't have to take the damn things off when traversing. The freestyle frenzy is now owened by skiers who I think look more stylish in the air. I thus think SBing is becoming derated in the long-term.

DOn't know why all the hate for boarders. Some of my best friends are boarders and we ride together regularly. They have their own style and so do we - we gotta give them props cause even though there are a shit load of posers out there there are some true to the sport going huge and ripping if up big time!

Getting caught with your penis up an Elephant's ass is about as much fun as AIDS

Yea agree on the traverse point, but hiking is so much easier for them... they're in something that is more of a normal boot, and they only have to carry one thing, we've got these huge clods the mafia could drown people in, 2 poles and 2 skis.

I used to think that most snowboarders were just ridin the wave because it was projected as being badass and ultra cool...all the people I knew that were riding were like 'you'll switch over eventually..just wait and see. Snowboarding totally rules...' etc. Needless to say that just made me more determined NEVER to change over. I'm a skier. Always have been, always will be. Skiing rocks my world.

BUT

I have NOTHING against snowboarding or snowboarders.

Snowboarding is definitely here to stay and we owe the riding community alot...

I'm sick of people doing the 'us vs. them' thing. People like that need to get lives.

We both love our sports (and they're both incredible sports!)and that's all that matters.

So, just had to get that out.

i've always said, there's nothing better than snowboarding steep powder.....oh wait, why would i waste a pow day on a snowboard when i could ski!!!!

yeah, most snowboarders are gay. And saying we took things from them is a little off, if anything they took stuff from us, like the chair lift and what not. Snowboarders are the rats of the mountain. They get in your way, they don't know how to alternate in lift lines, they run into your skis and shit, they smell. Most kids start snowboarding b/c its 'cool' learning to ski is way harder than learning to snowboard. all in all snowboarding in my opnion is super gay.

I haven't seen anyone on this thread *hate* against snowboarding, I've only seen comparisons.

Skiing is a much more technical sport, while there are many technical aspects of snowboarding, it is not the same.

..Although have you seen a snowboarder rip up a steep back country chute?

I really could care less what you are riding, as long as you are out there on the slopes having a good time, doing your thing (as long as it's not running over my skis, bitches :P)

I tried snowboarding just to say I did it last year, and I sucked balls at it, and it just wasn't for me.

Snowboarding is an alternative for those people who may not click with skiing. While I am sure many fads will come and go, I don't see snowboarding leaving the scene any time soon.

Skiing was a dying sport, and I think we owe our thanks to snowboarding for helping save it. They brought a fresh new image to the winter sports and brought alot of attention to our scene.

We can learn alot from snowboarders and their fluid style. But at the same time, I feel that snowboarders have alot to learn from us.

My question is whatever happened to sports like rollerskating, was it ever as big as snowboarding? and is rollerblading dying out?

and pocketrocket, because of that attitude everyone hates you! just kiddin bro, but stop dissin other sports, it is lame. they are both fun, they are both progressive, and one day, skiing and snowboarding will be at the same level. we will push the two sports farther and farther, instead of just progressing in one sport or the other.that is what i believe. i wanna see all skiers diversify into all aspects, and not just specialize in one disipline

(trust me, the '' things aren't actually there)

i dont see how i dissed anything there...i simply said...snowboarding in powder is awesome, but i'd much rather ski in powder...i didnt put snowboarding down at all...which is wierd, i usually do...whatever
