here's an article from the Burton site-

Burlington, VT – Four Star Distribution has agreed to sell all four of its snowboard brands to Burton. Both parties have agreed on terms and are in the due diligence period of the acquisition, which is expected to be complete by August 15th, 2004. Four Star’s brands will stay on the West Coast but will move from its current location.

The acquisition represents a new day for Burton to add to its existing portfolio of brands, which includes Burton, Analog, Gravis Footwear, RED Helmets & Impact Protection and Anon Optics. “We feel that the acquisition of Forum, Special Blend, Jeenyus and Foursquare presents an excellent opportunity to reach out to a company that has great brands and a strong consumer following, but has not been able to reach its market potential,� said Laurent Potdevin, Burton’s President. Markus Bohi of Four Star Distribution went on to say, “Selling off these brands is a very difficult decision for the company. We felt that we needed to concentrate on C1RCA’s footwear and apparel business in order to be successful in the long-term. Over the years, we have been approached many times about selling these brands, but the fit and timing never worked. The timing is now right, and we could not place the brands’ future in better hands than Burton, the clear global market leader.“

“I think I speak for all of us at Burton when I say that we have gotten tired of watching ski companies buy up snowboard brands,� says Jake Burton, founder and owner of Burton. “Forum is a company we have always respected, and it is a brand that needed to stay in the hands of snowboarders. We will do our best to see that Forum and its sister brands continue to grow and develop.�

I hope this doesn't happen to skiing.

I couldn't care less since I don't snowboard, but I don't think it'll happen to skiing until it gets remotely as popular (which will take a long time).

What newschool ski company would actually be capable of buying up all the other ones? There is no Burton in this sport... Line's the closest thing we've got, and that's not gonna happen. Salo and Rossi? I don't know...I guess one of them could buy up all the small companies.

they're right in the sense that it's good for snowboarding that those independant companies didn't fall into the hands of salomon or another european ski racing company. but still...

burton also owns ronin which is gonna start sponsering skiers. but burton owning all that is ridiculous

it's hard for me to have an opinon on, a company coudl expand like burton did, and a lot of there expansion with the new entities like ananlog, anon, gravis etc have all be within the past few years. i am all about expanding things but what if this stuff were to happen.

Salomon is pretty freakin huge, especially after the Adidas 'merger'... eventually if skiing becomes really bigger it COULD, start buying the smaller companies.

well K2 owns something near 30+ companied that range from shoes to skis to ride to olin to Brass eagle. But it seems kinda lame to have burton own damn near every snowboard it'll be interesting to see what this does to innovations in the industry

i started skiing then switched to boarding for 2 years. Today i bought new skis and boots and im gonna sell my snowboarding shit. nothing's better than skiing

atlantaski, ronin isn't it's own company that's owned by burton like analog.

it's just one of the 3 outerwear lines that burton produces, one is Burton, then Ronin and AK, they aren't serperate companies

it is already happening in skiing...huge european conglomerates own tons of companies, but that doesnt mean too much. volkl is owned by k2, but they still are independent of k2 and make their own skis and do their own r&d. the difference is they are financed by a different corporation.

ill be super rich and own mt.hood and let everybody from ns ski for free... except freezed

line and 4f and armada and DEFI SKIs wont be bought out. unless sterbenz or levinthal or T get really fuckin greedy or the board that runs the company does itll stay a rider owned company and i dont think any of those guys would let that happen to skiing.

Salomon and Adidas did not 'merge.' Adidas bought Salomon for Taylor Made, Adidas could give 2 shits about Salomon. They needed something to compete with Nike's golf line and the easiest way of doing that was to buy Salomon. No 'merging' occured.

As far as the topic goes, I guess ELAN won't be making Forum and Jeenyus boards anymore.

 
Line already sold itself. They are owned by Karhu, the cross country ski company, but all day to day decisions are still made by levinthal.

KAF, that's why I put 'merger' between thingies (' and ', I don't know how you call that in english), I agree Adidas doesen't care about Salomon. But in the future if skiing (newschool) grows into a huge market (it only took 10 years or so for snowboarding), Salomon will probably the biggest company. Things could radically change though (bankrupcty, etc.)

Oh and Rossi does owns Dynastar (I think?). Some people say Dynastar stands for Do you need another ski than a rossignol (or something like that), but that's bullcrap.

Actually this may be good for snowvboarding. The baclash against Burton may be hard, giving smaller companie(like Terje's who left burton durong this deal), never summer, academy and others more business. As long as there are mountains and skis though I aint too worried

Lauri Heiskari's segment was the best non-backcountry segment I think I've maybe ever seen (in either of the sports).

Jake Burton, whose last name happens to be Carpenter, already is one rich dude. He spent the past year, crusing around the globe riding wherever he felt like. That would be the life. When you have done as much for a sport as he has, you can do those kind of things.
