Snowboarding Cops in Canada

Prohibition took another strange turn this week when it was reported that RCMP officers in Alberta have started to strap on snowboards and patrol the Lake Louise and Nakiska ski resorts in an effort to deter “substance abuse”.

From the CBC:

The officers, who are in uniform and carrying weapons, are focusing their attention on substance abuse on the chairlifts and gondolas.

“It’s going to deter people from bringing narcotics or have that second look of doing something on the ski hill because they know there is going to be a police presence,” said RCMP Cpl. Jeff Campbell, the detachment commander in Lake Louise. (…)

Two officers will be on patrol Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as holidays including March break and Easter weekend. RCMP hope to expand the program once they have more officers certified.”

While the RCMP ski patrol is a volunteer program, it is still very much official police business and carries the full weight of the law. The program has been in effect since December with the primary focus being to deter skiers and snowboarders from using “narcotics”, but has thus far resulted in just one minor cannabis seizure.

Officials from Lake Louise have gone on record welcoming the RCMP presence, but have also made a point of clarifying that crime isn’t an issue at the resort, which raises a number of questions as to why such a program even exists.

With 65% of Canadians in favour of either legalizing or decriminalizing cannabis, should the RCMP really be expanding their efforts to clamp down on casual use?

The RCMP is touting the ski patrols as a “pro-active policing initiative” but given that neither ski hill (nor any ski hill for that matter) has any real need for a police presence, is it an appropriate and responsible use of police resources?

This program, which explicitly promotes the additional enforcement of a highly unpopular law, is emblematic of a much larger problem: the growing disconnect between the RCMP and the Canadian public.

An Ipsos-Reid poll from late December on public confidence in the RCMP found that support for the mounties has decreased sharply over the past five years.

In January, Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, held a summit with law enforcement officials from across the country to discuss the economics of policing. The purpose of the summit was to examine policing costs, which reached a whopping $12.6 billion in 2011, and to discuss ways to make policing in Canada more efficient and cost-effective.

As the cost of policing becomes increasingly unsustainable and confidence in the RCMP heads downhill, chasing after pot-smoking snowboarders seems like a rather absurd waste of police resources.

So how could Canada lower its policing costs and repair public confidence in the RCMP?

One of the simplest solutions to these two critical problems would be to regulate and tax cannabis.

This would free up police resources currently being wasted on the suppression of a substance that the majority of Canadians think should not be illegal, while at the same time restoring faith in police officers by removing the burden of such an unpopular law.

Honestly I find this absolutely hilarious, first of all snowboarding (probably somewhat poorly since they said they have to "train others" to fit the demand)with a gun sounds completely dangerous and they'll maybe if the planets align bust some reefer smoking hooligans that aren't smart enough to keep it in the trees.

damn on a ski mountain i know i could get away from some cop snowboarding so i would definitely just push one of those fuckers over and book it, also i cant wait until one of those guys crashes and his gun goes off or something

They would thats so wack fuck the police i could lose one of them in a fucking instant with a blunt hanging out of my mouth.

then like realize he called and told the other cops that are surely near the area that a stupid 4x thug boy on skis was coming down the mountain, then you could run from them in your ski boots and get tazed and be charged for felony assault on a police officer and get kicked off the mountain for good. + idea dude

You'd have to have a jacket on you were gonna ditch after you push his gaper ass over so they don't recognize you at the bottom.

I never spit on anyone on the trails but I'd be hocking loogies at these cocksuckers.

They have no business being on a hill busting people for an unpopular law.

They sound as bad as the border motherfuckers who almost cut up my leathers when I went to the casinos in Niagra Falls and the butt licking jealous pricks who kept me for 2 hours in Vancouver before my Bruins smoked the Canucks since the drug dog jumped on me. Fucking hate Canadian border cops and I've never been dumb enough to have trees on my going to Canada.

I don't see the point of chasing people about the ski hill for small amounts of weed which are clearly being used for personal uses. It's not like there is a serious problem with dealing or there is anybody carrying large amounts. They should instead be focussing their efforts on supply and dealing if they want to crack down on use.

I hate when i have to sit in the gondola with those dead head junkies shooting narcotics! jeesh!

alot of mts in the us are putting up sigins that say not to smoke in the lift lines and on the lift. i feel like everyones cetching on that all skiers and snowboarders are drinking and smoking on the lifts. hahaha

Since a lot of people seem to be missing a key problem with this, I'll say what I want.

I think it's just a huge waste of resources. To actually have a patrol on the hill cruising around while they could be busting drunk drivers coming down the hill, or rocketing down the highway and being a danger to the roads.

Lake Louise is roughly 4200 square acres of in bounds terrain, that's large enough to not notice their presence at all. And if you're stupid enough to be caught smoking on the hill, ski patrol should just have to deal with you, and if its worse, maybe they can foresee further actions with the RCMP theirselves.

It's the stupidest law to begin with, more that half the population agrees with it. Just let it go, it's hot like people are running cocaine up on the hill

You are dumb. Just because a law is unpopular does not mean it should not be respected. It is illegal to smoke weed. Until that changes I'm all for cops enforcing the law. Besides It's 2 cops on the whole bloody mountain.

1. the fact you used "bloody" as an adjective makes you a fag.

2. I wont even argue for 420 trees and 3s smoking piff and hucking flips. @ beerbackflipdrinkingedit

3.favorite tricks: one with a beer in my hand.

420 karma threads.........

This is fucking ridiculous.

I'm honestly offended to be Canadian right now. I can not believe that our government has allowed us to turn into this while Various states are actually legalizing it.

I really thought we were better than this.

yeah you guys do look like a buncha fucks right now to the rest of the world. solution tho is just make sidecountry smokespots. thats wwhat i did at my resort cus its more nice anyway. trek to a nice ass spot where a lazy cop wont go to anyways, and light up. youd get to have some good scenery too im guessing in canada and some bomb skiing to look forward to after you all ski. smoking on the lift is shitty anyways, id rather go to my cave;)

mfw one of those cops eats shit into the trees and suffocates in a tree well.mfw the prevention of weed kills more people than weed itself

mfw i have no face

this sounds more like a ploy to just let the cops hit the mountain while working than anything else. They'll probably bust like 1 person per day just to keep up appearances. I mean, imagine getting paid a decent salary to go ski all day.

cops probably get paid more than instructors or patrollers though. Plus really...they have such minimal responsibility on the mountain. No lessons to teach, not responding to injuries and stuff...it sounds perfect.

oh for sure, instructors and patrollers rarely make over $15/hour.

my salary is equal to if not a bit more than a policeman with similar experience.

It's a volunteer thing though. Cop does a patrol every week or two on his day off and gets a season pass.

I mean I guess the jackets cost money but not a significant amount

Although it's a volunteer thing, it's one of those presences that aren't needed. It just feels like there's something off on it to me, and it doesn't even affect me.

Vail has been doing this forever but I have never found them to do much of any thing except settle like theft disputes

anybody with half a fucking brain can find somewhere to smoke on the hill at lake louise where nobody will find them. that place is huge.

This is sad sad news. Moutain is the last place where people are free and enjoy themselves however they can. Not anymore. Fuck that.

I think you hold a far too idealized concept of skiing. It's not as if the police couldn't be called to the mountain before, now they just happen to already be there.

They're not gonna be out there writing speeding tickets and searching you in the lift lines.

Like i said, i guarantee that 99% of their time will be spent riding and skiing. The other 1% will consist of "hey, are you kids smoking weed?! Well....don't. Have a good one"

Breaking news! apparently there are cops hanging out at the top of the gonjolla @ stowe resort in Vermont today. just saw it on mynewsfeed today. so to the person above, they actualy are waiting around in lift lines and such.

ok cool, this thread is about cops in canada at completely unrelated resorts. I'm not talking about cops apparently showing up once at stowe.

oh im sorry. should have made another thred or posted in reigonals. that was totaly unrelated. i wont bring any american riffraf in to a caniadian only thred ever again.

haha why would you expect anything less with the tories in charge. especially here in alberta people are more uptight about this shit then other parts of the country
