SNOW: freeride/freestyle skiing game

Holy hell,

yes, SNOW will be F2P you can ride around the mountain as much as you like without spending a dime. But that does't mean we don't want your money.

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP TELLING US THEY'RE MAKING SKIING VIDEO GAMES BEFORE THEY'RE DONE MAKING THE SKI VIDEO GAME.... THIS HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR OVER A YEAR AND IT'S PROBABLY NOT GONNA COME OUT FOR ANOTHER YEAR

STOP STARTING ALL THE HYPE

I think it would be sick if you actually recreated a real mountain. like Breck or wherever, where there are more designated trails. It adds a more realistic aspect to the game other than you're just skiing around in some fictional never ending backcountry where all you do is go off rock booters. We all want realistic, and backcountry is part of that, but so is frontside jibbing/skiing. Where you can go in between trails and hit some nasty tree line, but it's without a doubt a lot more difficult to do that.

Wow...really sick idea. If you just remade Breck that would be amazing. It would make the came feel that much cooler.

Recreating real resorts and mountains is something we've been asked about by both community members and potential business partners. Unfortunately, it's a little harder than just taking a map and some reference photos and just remaking the slopes.

From a technical standpoint, recreating something that people are so familiar with is extremely challenging for both pure visual aspects but also space/area allocation. Even though we have recreated the exact physics of skiing in SNOW, spaces still feels very different as you don't have the exact same precision controls and direct contact as you do in real life. On top of that, the game would feel very slow if we didn't make minor adjustments to both core riding but also the camera movement. Skiing fast is fun in real life, but that's because there is real danger involved and the feeling of speed is much greater than in a game.

From a business side, recreating a ski resort requires a bunch of authorisation that isn't necessarily easy to obtain. Most things you ski past and around are owned by various companies and would require the proper licensing from us to be able to recreate in a game. It's not impossible, it's just a bunch of extra red tape.

That isn't saying we would never consider it when the game is up and running, but right now we're not going to look into it. We WILL have sufficient piste and terrain park areas for you to spend time in and they will include tree lines that you can cut off into and explore. These areas will be created with plenty of inspiration from favourite ski locations as well as from input from the community. Unlike real slopes, we can design ours to maximise the amount of things to do in any given space, so we believe users will be quite content with what's on offer.

Hope that answers your question/comment.

It isn't necessarily recreating a certain mountain at all. I ussed breck simply as an example, what I was getting at, is the mountain has to keep a certain integrity, to be able to make it your own, but it needs to have a personality, breck has a personality. You need to personify the fact it is a resort/place. Like grand theft auto (I know, two different genres) uses aspects of our world, while maintaining the vibe of a fictional place. Basically it was a roundabout way of saying that the mountain should be fictional, but real.

Oh, right. Well we are using the way GTA mimics real places (Liberty City = NYC) as inspiration to create our mountains. The mountains will feel like real places and have everything you would expect to find in a mountain resort. We are on the same page :)

I expect expensive concessions, South American lifties and distractingly attractive female racers, at the very least.

For now yes. Consoles are not as straightforward a platform to release a game on. They require a licensed publisher and remove a huge amount of freedom from the developer. Hopefully the new generation of consoles (including OUYA) will offer more open platforms.

We'd love to see SNOW on a TV :)

I know a guy who lives in Stockholm. He is a really dedicated photographer and filmer. If you allowed him into your offices/place or something, you could maybe tell us about the game, showing how you work with making it, and telling whats to come in the future. He can probably document it all and send it to you so you can publish on your website or something. Haven't spoken to him, but he will for sure be more than happy and stoked to do a documentation. Maybe this could be something?

Hey, once the game gets released I'll be happy to hook my computer up to my flatscreen and post some gameplay footage. Will SNOW support the use of XBOX/PS3 controllers? I highly suggest that, as it makes skiing games feel so much better.

-------

And as to the idea for real mountains, that's sort of what I was getting it. Rather than having one trail like in Youriding or Shredsauce, there would be lifts, trail signs, different peaks, different directions that you could ride. Makes it feel like a real mountain. As much as I dislike Shaun White, Shaun White Snowboarding did this very well in my opinion.

Well with CryEngine Xbox controllers are supported by default provided you have the correct drivers and a USB cable/wireless receiver. Last I heard, they were working on being able to support PS3 controllers without having to run external software.

The best thing you can do for us at the moment is spread the word. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, chat on our forum and let all your friends know about the game (if they don't yet).

Game looks sick and I'm super stoked for it. A few things I thought would be cool if the mountain and urban were connected So it'd be almost like whistler where urban would be available right off the mountain. Also it would be cool to have a backcountry where you can snowmobile out and search for the sickest line. Tis would just add a whole new aspect of discovery! Just my ideas but from what I've seen this will be amazing

Just FYI Free_Haven, we have a SNOW forum where we encourage our community to share their ideas for the game in. You can check it out here.

Anyway, let me give you some feedback on your ideas. As SNOW is an open world game, you will definitely be able to ski from the top of the mountain all the way down to a small town where you can find urban features. Unfortunately this won't be available from day 1 as it requires a lot of extra content to be created from our end.

Somewhere on our "to do" list is adding snowmobiles to both compete/race with but also to enhance exploration around the mountain. No idea when we'll get around to adding it, but we do have it planned for some point.

SNOW will share some similarities with how shredsauce feels, but we have created a more robust system for controlling the character - we have recreated the actual physics related to skiing which results in a more enjoyable and deeper experience when you're just riding around the mountain.

As for trick related physics, I would say we're a little more realistic than what Shredsauce has to offer - but we're still tuning the values so it's hard to say.

Shredsauce is how realistic as you make it, it's possible to do proper looking corks, flats and dubs, it's hard, but that's just fun. Malcoms only lack is the poor looking front and backflips.

But as long as the physics isn't as horrible as the YouRiding bta, i'm sure i will enjoy your game!

The thing thats make al the made skigames unrealistic is that uo flip as much as you spin, thereby a tripple is as easy to accomplish as an 1080, witch is stupid..
