Sneaking onto Mammoth

-Never been there.

-Wanna go as cheap as possible.

-Looking to sleep in the car and bum rush lift.

--How easy is it????

I feel your pain in regards to steep lift ticket prices but the thing is, is that right now resorts and ski areas really need our support. With a tough economic situation going on most places have seen a drastic reduction in the number of day users which is where the majority of revenue is generated to operate. Ripping off the resorts could come around to bite us in the ass and think of how much it sucks for places to close down. Get a half day ticket or buy one off of someone heading home early.

Buying one of someone who is heading home early hurts the mountain just as much. 2 people skiing for the price of one.

resorts like mammoth can still run if a some ppl don't pay for a lift ticket, some of us don't really have the money to pay for lift tickets that are that expensive but we still wanna ski as much as possible so I say do what you gotta do even if it involves sneakying onto the lift..

While your at it those new Audi's look nice. I've always wanted one, but I just don't have enough money, and I really think I deserve one, and Audi won't miss only ONE car, they are a huge company.

haha exactly

maybe someone thinks you wont mind when he takes $50 off you

i mean you make $15,000 a year you won't notice...

a lift ticket and a car is not a very good comparison, and I understand about supporting your mountain and If i have the money then I'll usually buy a ticket but if not I'm not gonna let it stop me from skiing there still.

Usually the lifts up towards the top/middle of the mountain don't scan tickets because if you're up to that point then you obviously have a ticket. Wake up early and hike through the trees to one of the lifts that doesn't scan and keep lapping those lifts.

This is usually the case. I ski Mammoth every weekend, and they usually don't check up on the mountain. I have occasionally seen them scan people at chair 23, but not too often.

Very very bad idea. They are strict about checking tickets and they will fuck you if they catch you.

walk around a busy lift line, look for a day pass on some guys pants or jacket and clip it off.
worst that happens to the guy you took the pass from has to go use his stub for a new one, and you get up the lift for free. just dont come back down because your pass is invalid when he gets a new one.

Sometimes the lifties wait til your getting onto the lift, stop or slow down the lift and check everyone's tickets/passes.

I wasn't looking to get into any ethical issues here. I just want to know some of the tricks of the trade. Mammoth will continue to thrive even if my g/f and I decide to sneak on the lift. I was looking to find some sort of lift that is more laxed than others or has more lines leading into it which would make it easier to sneak on. Come on guys... help a broke ass college student out

i generally just think its a bad idea... firstly, supporting the ski industry is pretty key, you say that one person doesnt matter, but thats still 50 buks down the drain for them, (or however much it costs), it doesnt work like that. support the industry, it needs us.

secondly, you get caught without a pass trying to ski for free would get you in the shitter, and its just immoral

poaching really isnt that hard if you are smart about it and properly survey the situation. I got past the nazi cowboy hat dude at Timberline a lot, that was tough
the only time i almost got in trouble was at stowe last year, i peaced to the woods, back to my car and swapped clothes the second I saw the lifty pick up the phone

its different than taking a car or what ever. it costs money for them to build that car. what difference is it going to make if that one person is going to be there or not. its not like it costs extra money to the hill if one or two people sneak onto the lifts. chair lifts cost the same to run if the lift is full or if its empty.
lets face it, paying 90 bucks for a day of skiing fucking sucks. i dont see why some people make such a big deal about sneaking on to the hill. im not saying that i would do it, but if i see someone sneak on, im not going to call them out.

Good luck. There's no way you can ski without a pass, but sleeping in your car somewhere around town shouldn't be too hard.

i would be so scared to get caught by the lift nazi! he comes out on busy days to chair 6 to murder stealers. you can probably get by sometimes if you're smart but they will periodically check everyone - just the other day while he was watching they checked everyone, looked at your face, then asked your birthday.

Here's what you need to know about poaching at Mammoth: Don't do it.

Reason 1 - It is federal land. If you get caught poaching and the person who catches you says you are being a dick, you will most likely get arrested and face federal charges.

Reason 2 - If you buy a ticket off someone in the parking lot, it is the same as sneaking onto the lifts without a ticket in the eyes of the law. You will get charged with fraud (federal offense).

Reason 3 - The lifties get $ for catching people who poach, so you will get caught. The bigger the ticket bust, the more $ they get. Considering they don't make shit to start with, this is a big incentive for them.

Reason 4 - The two lifts that access the best parks (Chair 6 - Forest Trail and Main along with 2 pipes; Chair 4 - South Park and Jibs Galore) are the lifts that they probably scan the most at.

For the person who said they can't afford to pay the lift prices at Mammoth but want to ski as much as possible, you sound ridiculous. If you want to ski a lot on a limited budget, try someplace more inexpensive like Mt. High or Bear or anywhere. Mammoth had to lay off 101 employees earlier this year due to a lack of revenue. People scamming ticket one way or another equals a huge loss throughout the season. Do you want to be part of the reason someone has lost their job?

look dude who wants to poach, just dont. I'll admit ive done it there and its pretty fucking easy if you are smart, but getting caught is in no way worth scoring a free ticket. support one of the best mountains and parks in the U.S. even if it is expensive, its worth keeping it around.
i mean seriously we are all poor, but we choose to do one of the most expensive sports there is... if you can't afford it, then dont do it. plain and simple economics.

ok moron, it takes money to run a mtn, and they sell lift tickets to....

....OH YEAH, PAY TO RUN THE MTN,

and its exactly the same as a car cause stealing is stealing, no matter what its wrong.

it costs money to run a mountain. what difference is it going to make if i steal JUST ONE car?

coming from a convicted shoplifter himself. dont do it. think to yourself "is a day pass at mammoth really worth potentially $200-1000?"

audi wouldnt miss only one car, they have a huge shit ton of money, they could just give away like 2000 cars and hardly see much effect, thats like saying your hurting wal mart or mcdonalds by stealing from them. resorts like mammoth also have a ton of money, and the thing is, your not taking anything away from them, riding up the chair a couple times doesnt cost them anything. if you cant afford it and dont ski there, or if you find a way to sneak on the lifts so you dont have to pay, doesnt do shit, it doesnt hurt mammoth at all.
that being said, if you can afford it, just pay, its the nice thing to do, especially mammoth cause they dont seem like huge dicks like vail resorts. but if you really honeslty cannot afford it and cannot ski unless you sneak on, then i think its fine. really if i owned a big ski resort, and i knew a couple people a day were sneaking on i wouldnt care one bit.

mammoth does not have a lot of money. ski resorts run on narrow profit margins...mammoth had to fire a bunch of employees earlier this season.

I think they are owned by Intrawest (same corp that owns Whistler), but they operate on their own.

Joining the thread for the wrong reasons, but this was just too dumb of a post.

10 g's for a new car is not the same as 50 bucks for a lift ticket.

Stealing is wrong, but the severity of the stealing is always pertinent in any situation.

Mammoth layed off a bunch of people to keep their profit margins high. Mammoth is the only hill that always makes money. that said, they will fuck you if they catch you poaching. there is a spring pass for sale right now for a few hundred. If you buy 3 days riding it's only $53 a day. or go to June. tix are only 40 or 50 there. If you dont care about hitting the 100 foot jumps in main park, you might as well go to june anyways. good luck

It's possible!!

But if they catch you they're all fucked about it, and will bring the sheriff in on it, you gotta go to court and all kinds of bullshit..

One of the most morally correct ways to do it is to talk to one of the employees and see if you can buy a comp pass that they generally get for free off of them for a discounted price. The mountain normally doesn't get money from these pre-assigned comp passes anyway and at the same time you are putting money directly into the employees pocket.
