Smoother spins?

okay so 07-08 was my first season on skis. i started late december

beginning of january and met some of the coolest guys out on the

slopes. I tried harder to get better and by the end of the season i

could huck a 7. what i need is your help on spotting. i went to lake

placid and for 3's you would spot something 180 and bring it around to

complete your rotation. my question is. when you're doing bigger spins

how do you spot when all you're worried about is getting the damn thing

around? what grabs make it easier so that you're not thinking about it

as much and how long will it take to get out of this hucking mentality?

thanks.

i posted in trick tip forums but it seems a bit dead so i was looking to try my luck in here?

well when i first started i wasnt an nser

and knew nothing about style so i hucked 7s like you. what helped me the most was getting a trampoline and working on my spins. its reallly not that bad once you get better at it. just work on 3s, make them good. them move up to fives then sevens and so on. whats weird for me is i could spin both ways when i started. i could spin faster right side but could put in the grab better spinning to the left. i know that sounds weird but i was jsut lucky and never had a problem with it. and with the spotting just look over your shoulder. jsut think about doing a 3 then adding an extra 180. spotting isnt too hard. i started out doing japans that was the easiest for me to start out doing. but i think mutes really help spinning.

yeah tails look sick but i think they are harder than mutes on bigger spins. i learned tails after doing mutes for awhile.

make sure you lead with your head, watch like andreas JOSS edit or any edit of a good skier that has slow motion close ups. They always are turning with there head trying to spot there landing.

drinking arnold palmer ice tea is known to increase your trick prowess 500-850%

how else do you think simon dumont got so good?

well what i do on sevens especially is do a three, spot my landing completely and then do the next 360. It works really well because you can speed up/slow down your rotation after the 1st 360 depending on your position in the air

yeah i can do mute 3's but when it comes to spins like 5's and 7's i just throw harder with like a windup of my arms. something i learned at camp was the spin should come from the core like your hips and torso so i'll definitely try that out. my parents won't let me get a trampoline but i always bounce at my friends house on occasion and i used the olympic tramps at lake placid for 4 day when i went water ramping. I could get 3's,5's,7's, and 9's but don't know how much more difficult it will be going off a lip and throwing down then bouncing off a $10,000 trampoline where when you're at the peak of your spin your 8-10 feet in the air.

I really need to retrain myself to spin with my head... currently I spin with my shoulders which is one of the worst methods possible but I've been doing it for so long I can't break out of it, I still can barely lead with my head except for small spins like 3's. Intellectually I know it will make things 1000x easier but my muscles are so trained to do it the old way I can't... really sucks. Anyone have any advice besides just brute retraining of muscles through repetition?

trust me man you will be fine. on another note. over the summer i always get excited i go try something new and stick it. just dont be afraid thats the worst possible habit to get.

i spin with my lats obliques and hips mostly your core muscles. idk if you can do cork spin on the tramp but try them and then when you are corked pick a spot to look at like a tree or something and try to look and that object while spinning and then spot the landing of the tramp i like to try to look at a person but it'll help with spotting and stalling for shiftys and grabs

yeah richie at lake placid is a phenomenal coach and to help with spins he'd make us do bronco 3's and daffy 3's so that we know we can throw anything into a spin and it doesn't have to be a grab. I tried cork 5's on the stick it mat with a safety and i got them down. at this point i want to ski so badly when i go back to it ill try the trick and hope for the best. ill wait until im back in the game so i dont stupidly mess up so early in the season.

this was my first year too and i can throw 7s too but work on getting your 3s and 5s super smooth first
and a wide stance always helps me stay smooth and corked.

i like to try to constantly spot my landing all the way through so i always know exactly where i am.

and tails and mutes are good for learning grabs in bigger spins

hey guys i have a question too. for some reason alot of times when i spin i throw corked adn land way back seat or on my back. how do i stop throwing cork? i tried not leaning back so much when i throw it but i still land back seat. sometimes i spin fine tho. any help would be great. thanks.

use your legs and core to spin, not your arms. Jump foward off the lip of the jump and don't look down between your skis, look straight. make sure you get a good foward pop off the lip. Think about it like this. The jump is slanted back and the landing is slanted foward. if you spin like you would on flat ground your gunna land way back seat. You need to jump foward to make up for the angles.
