the whole 'if you have the skills, you shouldn't have to pursue them.. they will find you' is not entirely true.
Some of the best riders out there don't have sponsors. If you live out in the redneck hills of west virginia (no offense to people who are from there) and are laying down switch venus fly traps to rail slides.. A company rep isn't going to just jump out from behind a bush and give you skis. Even if you compete alot and win all the comps you do, it doesn't mean you are just going to get signed.
For one, you might want to try doing BIGGER comps. Do comps that have alot of exposure and where alot of the big names are going to be. If you consistantly place well in those, then you'll probably be on your way.
Talk to people in the industry, make friends in high places, send demo tapes, place well in comps, and show these people why you would make a good asset to their team. They don't just want someone who can ski well.. Hell, for that matter they could train a monkey to throw switch rodeos and slap a sticker on him.. (hmm. not a bad idea..)
What companies are looking for is: Can this rider help us sell more products? What is your image? What is your personallity? Are you positive? motivated? put out a good vibe?
If you are doing all of the above, then you will be just fine.
