Smartphones

Well everyone, I am 22 years old and will be getting a smartphone for the first time and I don't plan on doing too much with it besides standard social media, internet, phone stuff. Now considering I am this old and still living in the stone age I don't know too much about smartphone technology.

I am half debating getting an Iphone because of the shared apps and my other apple products (mac and ipod). I looked up some Top 10 smartphone lists that have some others (LG G2, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia).

Anyways, I know some of you are pretty tech savvy so what would you guys recommend and why?

Those other phones like samsung are on the rise and people say they are better. But, I would get an Iphone just because I like them better. You should go to whatever phone store and talk to the poeple there to help you out with what you want exactly.

I have the GS4 and I really love it but if you want to sync with your apple devices an iPhone might the way to go for you.

1.Smartphones are so simple to use, so scratch that off the list. I learnt how to use an iphone in a few weeks.

2.What telecom company are you planning to go with. Some plans offer a discounted smartphone included. I signed with bell and got a iphone 4 for 100$. Not too shabby.

3.What are your main usages? Some phones offer 3G network, others 4G. Some have better cameras and other just have enormous screens. Be aware of battery life of phones!!!! Look at the specs of each phone and pick the one optimal for you. (I might suggest looking at strength, Nokia doesnt make phones no more. Since you ride, breaking a phone hurts)

Just remember its just a life perk and cherish it!

I have the Samsung GS3..The thing is tough! I have left it out on the deck during a rainstorm..still works. I have dropped it on wood flooring ON ITS SCREEN...still works..I don't know about the GS4 though because I heard the battery will pop.. You honestly can't go wrong now a days when buying a phone!

iPhone. It's just super smooth and easy to get used to. Coming from someone who has a PC and had never owned an iPhone until recently.

My s3 is tough as well. But if you want an android I wouldn't go with samsung. Their android software is too cluttered and half the stuff they over you'll never use. I'd get a nexus 5 for a nice stock android experience. But if you want an iphone then deff iphone 5 or 5s or 5c

i can't tell the difference in speed between the s4 i'm using now and the galaxy nexus that didn't even have 4g

If I were you I wouldn't buy a GS4 or HTC one right now, their replacements are coming out in three months and then you can either buy the new ones or buy the old ones for cheaper. If you're on a contract and want android and can't wait 3 months, get the G2. But if you're already invested in the apple ecosystem (bought a ton of apps and shit) just get an iphone

Thanks for the input guys!

The contract would be through verizon and considering I've been on the plan for 5 years and never upgraded I would be getting the phone now (not waiting for expirations/new versions of phones).

The main reason for the upgrade is I'm moving to a place for the next few months and there's no internet (but still 4g service) so I would pretty much be using the phone for email/social media/internet surfing, nothing too high tech so just something simple, and I use a mac computer. But it would be my only connection to internet away from work. I also want it to be able to create a mobile hotspot (do all smartphones do that?)

I guess the whole battery life thing I will have to just get used to (my phone now will last for 3 days) and durability (my current phone is a tank), but that's what cases are for right?

Short Version:

Verizon (would be getting the phone right away)

Mac Laptop

use it for Internet/Social Media (simple stuff)

If you do get an iPhone for the love of god get a protective case. Sooner or later you are going to drop it and wish you had a sturdy case. Other than that, iPhone is an excellent phone

If you start apple you may as well stay apple. I love apple products. they work and they look really fucking sick.

that said I fucking hate apple and I love my droid. I have a nexus 4. works well.

Bro, do you even mod? Easy as fuark to get rid of the bloatware, also, I have 4.4.1 Kit Kat on my S3 mini... hehehe

OnT: But, yeah, since you're obviously not familiar with stuff like that, I would say iPhone just for simplicity sake, and cause you already own a few Apple products you're propably best of staying with Apple

I am also on Verizon. For years I only used BlackBerry. Then I got a iPhone 4s it was ok but wanted to use it with my apple TV and ipad. Eventually I went back to blackberry. Got an iPhone 5 was so impressed with the new BlackBerry Q10 (big touch screen and flawless keyboards, unbelievable multitasking ability to carry a backup battery and 2 day battery life!) I sold the iphone 15 days after I got it and have never looked back. This is the first BlackBerry that competes with newer smart phones. It's a power house and functional as he'll.

BlackBerry Q10 and never look back. Does everything you need and shits on touch screen only

If you're on verizon and are concerned about battery, get the droid razr max. It has a 48 hour battery life (thats 48 hours of having the screen on, using it).

This.

Or get the z10, or even the z30.

I love my z10. It's all gesture based and super intuitive, also the best virtual keyboard out there.

mine doesnt, its closer to 8 hours continuous (screen/gps/etc continuous) use before it needs a charge. phone is also 1.5ish years old so maybe that has something to do with it. it does last from about 7am to 11pm with normal use (phone calls, texting, emails, some internet surfing) which is so much better than the last htc i had that would die in about 5 hours from the same normal use.

overall i would recommend the razr max, but not sure how it compares to everything else out there.

be sure to get a 4g phone...3g data is terrible.

you should consider a droid razr maxx HD because it has good features and good battery life. i prefer android phones because you can customize it how you want on the homescreens.

iphones are obviously good, but they seem too fragile and less customizable.

So I think I'm going with an iphone because of my other apple products and it seems super easy to use.

That being said, I can get a 4s for free, a 5c for $99, or a 5s for $199

Should I go ahead and get the free 4s or is it worth it to spend the $200 for the 5s?

5c or 5s just remember after 6 months your phone will be old news..Get the latest now..definitely worth it to spend $200..

if you choose android, i love my sony xperia. not only does it work really well, but i've dropped it more times than i can count onto concrete, hardwood, pavement, etc. and it's still going strong after 9 months. absolutely positive if i had an iphone the screen would be so gone.

So wouldn't that tell you you want the phone that the blackberry is trying to be??

Anyway, OP, Iphone seems like the best bet. Don't go with the free giveaway phone, the 4s will be really outdated 2 yrs from now
