Great interview with Hackel. I'd certainly agree that comp skiing has gotten so good that it's almost unrelateable for many skiers.

Part of the reason my friends and I stopped watching big mountain films when we were younger was because the skiing was completely unattainable for us - we were skiing rails in the southeast. Now it seems people are starting to get more of that same feeling, except this time with XGames and the Olympics.

This is such a tired old stance on the topic though. It makes one good point but leaves out a good amount of other stuff.

You think people who flip on the NFL on Sunday do it because it's really that personally relatable? People like to see the height of competition, it's just plain fun. Do I watch Magnus ski because I can ski like him? Hell no, I could never in a million years and that's why it's so fun to watch.

I'll put it this way: the "relatable" edits on NS get like 5 upvotes. Unrelateable skiing isn't bad. It's how the culture has and always will survive

I understand what you're saying, and I agree that many people do watch XGames because it's fun to watch people who are the best at what they do.

The point, I think, that Hackel was trying to make though is that most kids are never going to have the opportunity to go out and try XGames caliber tricks because they don't have access to coaches, good jumps, and training facilities. On the other hand, almost anyone on Newschoolers could go out and try and emulate what Magnus does in the park or even try to emulate his urban skiing if you live somewhere where it snows.

Doesn't skiing have to be relatable to some extent if the sport is going to survive? The Line Traveling Circus helped create a whole new generation of east coast skiers. They gave me the idea to build a summer ski setup, and I think almost everyone at my home mountain was trying hippy killers for a couple seasons. I think that's what Hackel means by skiing being 'relatable.'

I disagree that almost anyone on NS can go and emulate Magnus. And isn't he doing "x games caliber tricks"? He just won real street this year with tricks no one else can really do in the same way.

Skiing is implicitly relatable based on the fact that we all have them under our feet. The unrelatable aspects that are new and transgressive of previous boundaries is where it shines and stays alive. Because the LTC did something you'd never seen before, you felt inspired to do it.

Skiing stays alive by not being permanently fixed. People didn't relate to the bunch at first, now look where the culture is.

New Magnus is honestly pretty whack haha

This - his prime was winning SU and the couple of seasons that followed. Now a days, he is trying so hard to be weird and different that its comes off as unoriginal and annoying. His skiing used to be so much iller... used to go a lot bigger and do more tech tricks.

Lol the dude does like nollie 9s over flat bars and does like sw 2's holding the grab onto the rail on urban hits

Wait til Magnus's next game. He gets out of his element and absolutely crushes it.

I like how people hate on Magnus cause he skis differently like he he can’t still do all that shit. He got bored and is having fun doing things differently and quite frankly it’s way more impressive - his real ski segment (you know the gold medal winning one) is mind-melting cause it’s weird tricks done in the streets with super high risk. Magnus is extremely versatile and can do almost anything he wants to on skis, he’s just skiing the way he wants to right now, not the way you want him to.

Agreed, I can fuck with new wave shit if it’s tech, the shit he’s done recently is definetly crazy but yeah, whack.

I'm not hating on him and I definetly see where your coming from. Magnus is a sick skier and like you said his recent gold medal winning real street seg was completely fucked and I loved it.

I just think it's kinda whack that he eats shit now cause hes "swerving" too much haha. But hey if swerving is fun for him and impressive to you power to ya. I'll respect that lol.

I guess we have different definitions of what tech and whack are...

I mean tech like jumping or more standard tricks, mixing it with new wave style is cool. The edit was cool but it’s when it’s to exaggerated it gets annoying. My problem with the whole style is some of it’s unnecessary, aside clothes you freeze in the shit like buttering after you land is whack. The hands are one thing but it’s just like someone trying to make a joke longer, it ruins the whole thing.

Im not saying bunch skiers suck or I hate them, they’re all funny dudes, I just think it’s getting to be a bit much.

Not hating on magnus i still enjoy watching him ski and its sick as fuck what he is doing, im just saying i prefer watching him all g'd out throwing down bangers instead of the swerving and buttering and shit. Ya all those tricks he does in real street are impressive but i would still rather watch the old magnus/stept/lj style urban bangers.

With me at least it isnt a matter of what is harder/more tech but what i would rather see him do

Wow. These two are savages.

It's cliche to say so, but I'm blown away at how the level just goes up and up and accelerates.

Definitely need the best of 3 series for these guys. On second thought, they should just film a game every week that gets released the same day as a new one.

Seriously, talk about two different styles, those guys are gonna push each other.

It's gonna be crazy seeing Magnus go "outside his element" as slvsh put it. Consider me excited too.

sick game all around. anyone notice the rainbow rail jerry trap into the park? Also who makes the mitts(white ones) Siver and Petter were wearing?
