Slowmotion workflow??

I am wondering how people handle the workflow for editing 60fps (or higher) video.

at the moment I am working out a workflow but I want to know what people do.

the way Im thinking of doing it right now is to first bring all of the videos I might want in slowmotion into after effects. (this is where I make them slowmotion to conserve all frames. then I would import all the videos into fcp and edit from there

this sounds like a stupid way to do it though. I want something more efficiant. could you tell me what your routine ( workflow) is for editing slowmotion. (the proper way not just apple j 50%)

I hope that wasnt too confusing.

I just slow shit down 50%, probably the easiest way to do it. you could select multiple clips and do it all at once.

Theres one easier way, but it requires Cinema Tools.

1. Open clip with cinema tools.

2. Press the "Conform" button under the clipviewer.

3. Box will come up stating the clips current FPS, and will ask you what you want to conform the clip too.

4. Select 23.98FPS and hit okay.

fastest workflow ive found.

i just set to the percentage what i want down to 50 if i want usually 60-90% tho

cinema tools is the way to go. Just percenting it in FCP can lead to weird lags/dropped frames. I don't know anything about after effects.

I strongly doubt your keeping all of your frames. check when you put it to 50% without frame blending if every keyframe gives you motion. use to arows to see if every time you click the arrow to move forward one keyframe your image changes. what it normaly does is move every two keyframes to make 50%.

I know you know how to do slowmotions, Im not doubting that I just want to know if your final cut is somehow acting differently than mine.

what I want to do is avoid having droped frames in my 60p ( which final cut automaticaly does) and have a quick workflow.

anyone know where to download cinema tools, it didnt come with my fcp

this is why i like premiere.

prob won't help but in Premiere if you shoot 60p and bring it into a 24p timeline it drops frames to display at 24. decrease the speed percentage and you have slower footage all the way up to 39.9%

Well i mean, the whole point is you make your 60p shot down to 30p (in theory) without cinema tools or dvcprohd framerate converter. I didnt check, because all of my shots are on my other computer, but even if every two frames were the same, it'd be 30fps then and at 50%, but if you wanted 50% at 30fps, you might as well just convert it. With only converting to 65-90% of 60p, even if i do drop frames, its still higher than 30 and isn't noticeable. I havent converted a 60p shot to 60/30p in such a long time, there were like two shots in Tight! that were converted with vcprohd framerate converter, the rest were all 65-90%.

but final cut pro drops half of your frames so you might as well just shoot in 30fps 1080p to get the full quality. the 60p ends up being 30 frames even before you slow it down. whats the point of shooting at 60fps?

In premiere, if I want smooth slow mo, all I do is import the footage into a sequence of 720/60p and then right click each clip and interpret the footage. Then interpret the footage as 29.97. Boom.

After effects for twixtor.

This is the best way to do it. It is faster in the end because your clips are already slowed down when you import them into FCP.

Slowing it down in FCP has weird skipped/dropped frames or ghosting effects. I'm not exactly sure why, but I've had it happen randomly for some reason. Cinema Tools does a much cleaner job. Plus, having to right-click your clips in FCP then manually type in a percentage and uncheck frame blending takes longer when all is said and done.

Well, i've never had a problem slowing down my 60p in fcp down to 65%, it works so i keep doing it. Personally, i think 50% is too slow anyway.
