Sleeping in the parking lot overnight?

do mountains usually care if you stay overnight in their parking lot to ski the next morning? cause i'm thinking about going on a trip but its too long to wake up in the morning to drive and catch the first chair you know? what you guys think?

kirkwood in the winter = cold. as fuck. really fucking cold. not kidding.

to answer your question, most resorts don't care. i dont see why they would.
 
naw man, not funny. like 3 snowboarders did this at stratton a few years ago at us open in a little snowfort.... guess what it snowed that night. when snow comes plows come...

go buy a car battery. get one of those converters so you can plug outlets into it.

get a electric heater and you are golden.

cause it reallly realllly fucking cold.

also make sure you crack one of your windows just a bit, cause you need to have fresh air circulating in the car. beleive it or not you can sufficate in a closed up car.

 
havnt slept in the parking lot but have slept about a 5 min drive from the snow.

was cold as fuck but i just slept in my outter wear and packed my car with doonas and blankets.

if they have a problem drive down the road and find a rest stop or soemthing and park in there.
 
yes. because not everyone can ask their parents for hotel rooms for a few nights while they go check out a new resort. if you're not willing you sleep in a parking lot for some skiing you've picked the wrong sport.

I've done it a few times, in a camper, and they sometimes tell you to move, just make sure you're not near the entrance and are surrpunded by cars and don't be obvious that you're sleeping there. if they ask you to move drive down the road a bit or move to another parking lot if the resort has more than one.
 
Um dont a lot of those heaters emit carbon monoxide. I've heard of too many people dying from using heaters in cars and tents, dying from carbon monoxide.

As for the snowplows. The person that died was in a car. If it snows a lot you cant see cars sometimes and its dark. I know of an incidence at mt bachelor. Maybe park in a hotel parking lot of lodge parking lot. It shouldn't be a big deal. I plan on doing it soon.
 
I have done this many times over the summer and will prolly end up doing this atleast two or three times next winter at Snowshoe, and maybe Jays peak. I just packed up my Jeep and crashed in the back with my buds in.
 
Maybe that's why he said you gotta open a window, but I'm really not sure, and have never slept in a lot before.
 
i live in a parking lot. sleping bag is a must and hot box your car before you go to bed. you will wake up kinda high. Sleep in your coat if you must
 
With a good 4 season tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag it is a million times warmer and more comfortable then in your car. Personally I would always stay in a tent over a car.

I will be out camping in 0 to -10 degree weather and my tent will be around 30 degrees usually. Your car will be around 0. In my sleeping bag it is around 50-60 degrees. Have to love warm sleeping bags.

Typically I ask the resort and then setup where they tell me I can. That way it is all safe and sound.

i sleep in my car all the time, usually at parties that are out on some land or at a lake, but a few times when there was no room in the house and me and my girl we lookin for some alone time. just get a converter for outlets that plug into your cig lighter and get heat blankets they do wonders... crack a window but not much, and if need be start the car up and let it fun for 20 mins or so
 
i wouldnt do it during winter but maybe late spring

all i know is alta deosnt let people because they have to plow
just park in a good spot
 
what u do is just get a case of beer and a blanket and if ur cool u drive a conversion van with the fold out bed like myself yea its pretty pimpin and then u dont really mine the cold weather
 
if its gonna snow, you might wanna wake up every so often at night to make sure you aren't covered so you don't get plowed. you can also turn the car on for like 5 or 10 minutes to warm up.
 
man i dont see how a car would get plowed

it would just be a big random pile of snow in the parking lot

at my hill a car was just chillin for like 3 weeks a was coverd but the plow never touched it
 
car parks next to bank of snow that has been built up over the season

snows a lot, and is snowing hard when they bring in the snow blower. Driver does not know your there and cant see you since there is a big snowblower between you and him.

those go through cars pretty easily.

Just let the mountain know ahead of time if they don't have a designated overnight lot.
 
space heater, cracked windows, some nice sleeping bags, sick. we've already done one road trip in my friends expedition (fully loaded, with the third row seat, that had 4000 miles on it, that he bought for 2 grand from some old woman who wanted to get rid of it) and we're doing another. im all about sleeping in the parking lot, im too poor to pay to stay places
 
this is why people die of carbon monoxide. It's heavier than air. Cracking a window wont help. You cant smell. taste or see it.

Is everyone around here really this stupid? He said get an ELECTRIC HEATER. An electric heater doesn't give off carbon monoxide, only a heater with a flame will produce it. Yes, you could die if you let your car's engine run all night, with your windows closed up, and you have a bad exhaust leak, but if this was a common problem there would be a lot of dead truckers, cops and cab drivers out there.Regardless, you don't want to let your car run for heat all night, just to be safe, but if you have a zero degree bag you should be fine.
 
Ok first of all, only cheap and inexpensive heaters give off carbon monoxide and second cracking the window will do a lot because it allows fresh air to get into the car and dilute the CM.

But honestly, when buying a heater make sure you get an indoor safe heater.
 
first off. you will NOT die from sleeping in your car with the windows up. Thats just fucking ridiculous. Your car is not airtight and fresh are is always getting in. Secondly. It is cold but easily do-able. A few warm sleeping bags, blankets and pillows and sleep in your gear. I do it lots when we are expecting big storms to roll in. Id rather drive the highway safely the night before sleep through a ridiculous storm and wake up fresh at the hill ready to go. bring a little coleman stove and make yourself some soup or KD. or cook some hotdogs.
 
The only way that I've ever heard of people dying from carbon monoxide in their cars was when their exhaust pipes were covered (or plugged) with snow. I know Boston had about 5 or 6 deaths last year, where people would clean their cars off of snow, but not check their exhaust pipes.
 
Uhh, no. The guy built an igloo and slept in the lot. He got, well, pretty chopped up the next morning by one of the plows with those rotating blades.

Also look around for hiking trails that may be close, I've hiked in the AT a couple hundred yards and put up a tent to sleep the night to avoid paying motels near killington. Don't know where you're going but there may be a hiking trail nearby.
 
I slept in a parking lot this past weekend and this is how to go about doing it like a pimp:

Me and a buddy went up to Tremblant and slept in the Westin's hotel parking lot (indoor)....we brought up a 4x4 and folded down the enitre back row of seats, put down mattresses, sleeping bags, etc...we brought up a laptop + ski movies for entertainment....it wasn't the most comfortable sleep but wtv. The best part was using the hotel's amentities hahaha. After skiing the first day we came back to the car, picked up the bathing suits and took the elevator up the 5-star hotel's heated outdoor pool, hottub, sauna, showers, etc.... HAHAHA all for a grand total $18 parking charge. Also, try to find a spot with a power outlet nearby, that's always key if you want to charge up your ipod etc
 
it's really fun to camp out in a couple cars with your friends WHEN YOU PREPARE FOR IT

i got real drunk one night at the bar at the top of this one shitty mountain and forgot where my friend's house was...my phone ran out of batteries, and by the time i realized i was fucked, the bar was closed and everybody was gone. i had to sleep in the front seat of my car and didnt want to waste gas and electricity on the heater so i had to put on ALL of my extra gear from the back seat...it was still cold as fuck and i barely slept...the next day i could only ski for a couple hours because i was so sore and tired
 
haha, its completely doable, i grab my -20 F bag and sleepi in my car = fist chaie, if ur at a resort, theres probably cars parked overnight int he parking lot for hotels and stuff, but if ur not allowed, just drive a few minutes away and sleep there, or pitch a tent somehwere
 
I did it this winter at winter park once. It was -17 that night. I slept im my pants and sweat shirt in a normal cheapo sleeping bag and started the car up for a few mins every couple of hours to warm it up a little. It wasn't bad at all sleeping that night. The next day I could tell though that I didn't sleep the best.
 
i have slept in my car overnight in a parking lot....... wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be.... just stay warm,
 
i just did this last saturday night. i think every skier just do it at some point, and besides, its free lodging
