I heard they opened up a few days ago for the first time in 5 years. anyone know how decent opening day was? the hill doesn't look bad at all, if any of it's even open yet.

Where is that? There's the mountain to the north of Helena we call the sleeping giant, but I'm almost positive there's no ski area there...?

Crazy man, I was about to log on and make a thread about Sleeping Giant. I'm going to be in Cody sometime tomorrow night through Christmas Eve. My cousin and I were thinking about either heading there or Red Lodge but we're leaning towards sleeping Giant. If anyone's going to be there or knows how things are PM me or post in this thread.

Same here, i'm from casper but i'm around story right now visiting the parents. I brought the sticks just in case and was considering sleeping giant or red lodge too. I've got relatives in cody for SG, but red lodge just sounds legit this year, so it might be worth the longer drive.

i might be shreding red lodge for a few days while im back for break let me know when you will be there and we could possibly take some runs.

Alright man sounds good. If i had to guess i'll be up there within a few days after christmas. Or hell, maybe in a couple days if i get too antsy sitting around here. I'll let you know for sure if I do head up.

oh and anyone heard about bighorn ski resort?

on their website it says they're putting up a halfpipe this year?

i find it kinda hard to believe.

Hey man to avoid quoting twice, you said you were in Story now? How is the snow there, is there any? I've had some sweet skiing right out of Story, skinning out of the fish hatchery parking lot.

I don't know if you have ever skied Big Horn resort but that place is a joke, they are always claiming to have all kinds of crazy terrain and a sick park and all this when really its a little hill with one slow lift that goes to the top. I bet the midwest has better ski areas. Last I heard they weren't operating this year and Im pretty sure they haven't been open the past few years.

Right now there's a couple inches in places, it's really wet. we're supposed to get a couple more inches tonight though i think. closer to fish hatchery though, it could be a little more. i never imagined skinning out of there, i might have to check it out sometime.

and i've been to big horn once or twice a couple years ago. The only thing that really stood out that i dug on was the snow. the actual feel of it under me was really unique. it was mostly groomers, but it was just FUN. and even though i wasn't into park skiing a couple years ago, i remember their "park" was horrible, all they had was a couple rails. i don't think they're even open yet.

Sleeping Giant is pretty small but such a fun place! its east of cody closer to the park. My dad tried to buy it for like the past 20 years, cause the owner had no idea what to do with any of it, and only opened a few days a year. Finally 2 summers ago he sold it to a group of rich guys from wyo and they hired my dad and our summer crew to fix up the place and make it able to run. so we have had our people down there for the past 2 summers and also new people working from Cody. This summer they put in snowmaking a terrain park built by Joe Pope and dozed out and smoothed the ground picked rocks improved the rental gear and cut a new chairlift line.. the ski area usually gets good amounts of snow. And has some good steepslift tickets are cheap.. 24 student, 29 adult

wow, cool, who's your dad? My mom probably knows him, She knows everyone in cody. Do you know the feeley's? pam is my aunt, and my moms sister.

Was the guy that owns it named dahlem by any chance?

No my dad is from Montana so he dsnt know many people from Cody... keith dahlem used to own it but sold it like 2 years ago. Keith and my dad met when my dad was in school in wyo then my dad bought great divide and so him and keith talked about their ski areas all the time. haha lots of stuff but my dad knows alot about that place from helping keith out so the new owner hired my dad and our crew to help reconstruct it

Damn I drove over the Big Horns and they hardly have any snow. They're getting robbed this year... Places I have skied in the past have bare grass on them and places where I have seen people ski or build jumps are bare. There is no way the stuff out of Story is skiable now haha

you just missed the first decent storm of the year, i woke up today and had to run through about a foot and a half of powder to get from the guest cabin to the main house.

No, not really honestly. but its a step in the right direction. when i went into sheridan on saturday night it looked like the storm totally missed you. we were getting dumped on, and by the time i got to sheridan there was only a coating on the ground.
