Sleep Paralysis

A few friends and I were hanging out tonight and this was brought up. It was the first time I ever heard of it, and found it interesting. Anyone have any encounters? What are your thoughts on it.

maybe you should tell us more about what it is...ELABORATE

ooo thats such a big word i just had to use caps

isnt that when your asleep but your eyes are still open and you cant move?

kinda like waking up in surgery... or something like that but in your normal bed

Well, I figured I was the only one that didn't know what this was.. Anyways it's when you wake up from REM sleep (while sleeping on your back) and you are in a sense paralyzed. Some people see a witch type figure sitting on their chest and they cannot move or do anything about it. Quite scary actually.

Rem sleep isn't just sleeping on your back. i dont know much about rem sleep at all, but its a really deep sleep when the chemicals of DMT are released, and these chemicals also release when you die. REM sleep is very good for you.

i've had really weird things happen to me during sleep, but i've never woken up with a little witch sitting on my chest. just yesterday i woke up wearing a bathing suit, when i went to bed with boxers on. CRAZY>

when I first heard of it, it scared the shit out of me. scary stuff, most people say it lasts only 10 seconds, but I heard it can go on for a minute or so. daamn that would suck.

we should all try an experiment with this. if i'm ever in the situation, i'm gonna check to see if someone sleeping is in rem, then try to wake them up naturally to see if i can get them into paralysis.

i'll actually completely forget about this in 15 minutes

sometimes happens to me, but just briefly... and I'm not totally awake when it happens.

I feel like it only happens when I get woken up when I'm not totally asleep yet... it takes a moment to make all the connections haha

Sounds like an excuse someone made up trying to explain to their mom after they got caught getting butt raped by thier dog... Fell asleep with the peanut butter again?

i've had it happen to me.. i woke up from a deep sleep and tried to move my arm to grab my phone to see what time it was.. i couldn't move my arm so i tried to get up... no dice there either.. it took alot of mental concentration to finally get something moving, but after that i could move freely. it was quite scary

yea that happens to me every now and then. pretty dang scary! its basically like yer brain wakes up but yer body doesn't

Read up on Lucid Dreaming. Basically being totally awake IN your dreams. Good page on Wikipedia about sleep paralysis/lucid dreaming, confirms what I learned from a guy who studied it semi-professionally.

yeah its fucked, ive had that and also i have been half asleep and my head starts throbbbbbbbing like terribly and i hear loud wooshing noises and then when i tried to sit up or move i couldnt do it for about 15 seconds, it was really really scary, it hurt badly also like a real bad headache or something.

ever have that happen, when you can do anything you want in your dreams it'd be pretty sweet. as for waking up and being able to move never have that happen but i wake up a lot and my arm or leg is completly asleep, thats scary waking up and seeing your wrist bent weird and you cant feel it.

i hate it when you fall alseep really fast then wake up in what seems like 3 seconds later and it is morning already. i always feel like i was cheated out of a nights rest, and i get super angry.

I don't know what rem sleep, but the thing I got the other day freaked the shit out of me, I was truely thinking I was dieing.

First of all, I was VERY tired, sleeping in the RV, and going to "bed" at about 5 in the morning. Well as soon a I fell asleep I "woke up" but could'nt move, I could see my brother and feel the things you don't feel in dreams. I had this very warm sensation all over my body, like someone poured boiling water in my veins. The I fell asleep again, only to "wake up" a moment later, but now I could walk and its exaclty what I did. I fell on the floor and started talking but I couldn't talk so I tried my hardest to do so and I only made a slight sound, like someone trying to scream with a voice extinction. My brother which I saw in from of me then did the same thing. He looked exactly like the white pale little kids in horror movies.

Then, I woke up, Standing at someplace impossible to stand usually because there is a table in the way. I stayed there for at least 20 seconds watching everyone not noticing me.

I Then woke up again, and even though this time was real, I spent at least 20 minutes sitting and not shure If I was still asleep.

I don't want to live an experience like that again, this, was scary. But does someone know what really happened to me???.. I know its hard to explain...

I really want to experience this but I sleep on my side.

One time I woke up all dizzy and shit with intense pain in my arm. I was screaming and crying and my mom found me in my bathroom so I must of walked over

oh that happened to me once i like kind of woke up but i didnt i was on my back and i saw everything but couldnt move or speak, then i freaked out any like my mind started fucking with me, i started thinking i was seeing shit...it fucking sucked

yeah its pretty common for people to have dreams of them awakening. thats most likely what happened.

apparrently most ppl experience it at least once in their lifetime and yea it feels a lot like somebodys watching you and you can levitate and shit

explains a lof of alien abduction shit

Slightly off topic...

Sometimes, as I'm falling asleep (when really tired) I'll start having a totally normal dream. The only strange thing is that I'm not totally out of it yet, I feel like I'm still sort of in control yet but I'm not. At some point during this dream I'll do something physical. In one, I had approached the golf shot of a lifetime I forget what made it so damn special. I was totally dreaming, but then I wake up and I'm actually trying to swing an imaginary golf club in my bed.

one time i fell asleep with my arm under my body and when i woke up it was totally dead, it swung my body to move it and ended up hitting myself in the face, busting my lip and giving myself a bleeding nose. it was lifeless for like 5 minutes. weirdest shit ever. then the pins and needles were the worst ive ever had.

dude that happens to me like every other day it is so sweet. the first time i thought i broke my arm. i get up to piss and my arm just swings around and smacks off the headboard it was so cool. not it happens, i punch it like 10 times swing it around a few times and lay on it. then it goes away. it is amazing.

I lucid dream occasionally. Until i watched Waking Life, I had no idea it wasn't very common. A lot of times I'll be having a dream that is slowly turning nightmarish, and then i'll realize i'm dreaming and quickly change the dream.

REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement. Its the deepest form of sleep that occurs when your eyes roll back in your head and start moving bck and forth really quickly, but completely unconsciously, dreams are most likely to occur during REM sleep then during any other time of the night.

one time I woke up early and I couldn't move for like 40 seconds, I couldn't really even control my breathing, I was freeky

iv had the happen to me once when i was younger

we where camping and i woke up and my rents where talking and i wanted to say something but i couldnt and they didnt notice me for a good 10sec

when you fall asleep your bodys nerves and shit turn off because when your dreaming natural selection or god decided it would probably be a bad idea for people to be dreaming and move their body. when you wake up but this is still going on sleep paralysis happens. when you dream and this effect hasnt taken place your aible to kick, hit, move, idk talk

it happens to me sometimes, its freaky, like i feel like im falling and and the colors are like negative, fucked up

I'm going to bump this because I just experienced this for the first time the other day.

It scared the shit out of me. And my girlfriend too.

I woke up and tried to turn my head and couldn't. There was a super loud shuddering sound in my ears and I was completely unable to move. It scared the shit out of me; I thought i was going to die. I tried to call out my girlfriend's name and only got out a Mmmmmmmmm.... and then when she woke up I could suddenly move. Scary shit.

I sometimes get this. I'm pretty much used to the feeling so i try not to fight it and it goes away. Usually I try to wiggle my toes and fingers first and then I gradually regain movement.

ive had it happen to me a bunch of times now. honestly, my house is scary as fuck. my whole family sees people who arent there and shit. im an insomniac because i have terrible nightmares and have really weird sleeping habits (getting better now because im taking melatonin). but yeah the first time i woke up and from some fucked up dream and i felt someone basically climb on top of me and breath in my face. i couldnt move couldnt scream couldnt breath and some menacing demon was on top of me. needless to say when i actually got up i freaked the fuck out.
