Sleep Paralysis

well from my understanding, your still in a dream state so the contents of your dream can be seen and heard, so ive heard people talking to me and seen figures next to me and stuff it sucks pretty bad and is scary as fuck

i thought i've died a few times when ive already woken up and been paralyzed.... i thought i got shot in the head by snipers once... shit sucks...

ololol laced weed.

Just to elaborate, the feeling of paralysis is called REM atonia, which is what sets in just before REM sleep starts happening. Like others have said, sleep paralysis is when your body is experiencing the effects of REM atonia but REM sleep has ended. When people refer to seeing witches or whatever on their chest it's because they're experiencing some effects of REM sleep, or because they're hypogogic (there was a thread made a little while ago about this sort of). I get sleep paralysis nearly every time i fall asleep in a car during a trip, and it really breaks my balls. It happens a lot more in narcoleptics, so i'm kind of concerned i may have narcolepsy >_>

Slightly off topic, but has anyone heard about that guy who killed someone while he was sleepwalking? I saw a book on it, apparently it was a big deal about whether or not he should be held guilty for it.

i'm such a deep sleeper that i have never had a dream i remember. i know i've had dreams but i have never had one where i can actually remember any part of it. no joke. i wish could remember one cuz it sucks when my friends are talking about rediculous dreams they have had and i don't have any.

idk either dude it's weird. i guess the only way you really remember a dream is if you wake completely up. i guess i don't get out of the whole sleep cycle so i can't really remember wat happened in the dream but i know i did. that was my psych teacher's explanation atleast.

Sometimes when I close my eyes to sleep I see various shapes and if I focus on them they will spin and get bigger and it reminds me of times I've done boomers and tabs.

I woke up to my body being paralyzed. And it felt like someone was pushing on my chest holding me down. And my whole body had this tingly sensation, it finally stopped and I went and slept on the couch the rest of the night.

Second time it happened I flashed back in time. it was like going threw a portal then seeing a past time. I couldn't move or anything and it felt like I was being lifted up.

Just to clarify, REM is not the deepest state of sleep, it's actually Non REM sleep otherwise known as Slow Wave sleep that is the deepest state of sleep.
I just took a class that explained why you experience REM atonia. It turns out that there are a group of nuclei within the ponswhich release GABA called the Nucleus Reticularis Pontis Oralis. GABA cells in pons inhibit wake promotingnoradrenergic, seratonergic projections, but activate cholinergic neurons. Descendingcholinergic projections lead to muscle paralysis.
So, if you wake up, and can't move, chances are the enzymes and that are responsible for the breakdown of acetocholine or the reuptake of Ach are not doing their job and so you they are still innervating your muscles, which thereby paralyzes you.

I'm not sure if this is what is being talked about but... Since I can really remember I will occasionally wake up, chest down and i can't move. My head is just like stuck in the pillow and it feals like im sufficating, fucked up shit. I just like have to focus and it goes away.

This is fucked, happened to me this morning. I was just lying on my back i my room completely paralyzed besides my eyes like i could look around. At first i was more pissed than terrified because i was trying as hard as possible to make noise and to stand up but i couldn't. Then the fucking hallucinations started, and shit wasn't fun. I saw a shadow behind my surfboard that was in the corner of my room. A black guys head(not like african american but like shadow black) just formed from the shadow and started screaming then the whole shadow turned into a black man figure (again litterally black) and just crept along the wall. I was so fucking scared and then i finally got the strength to get up(the paralysis like ended i guess) and i stood up and finally and i got fucking control of myself. And thats also how i know it wasn't a dream because i didn't wake up, i finally got up and got back to like living......this is probably the most difficult thing to describe. Fuck its sketchy.

your brain intentionally paralyzes you in your sleep to keep you from injuring yourself.

also, i've had this happen many times. it's quite scary.

Also if anyone can explain this, i'll love you forever. Sometimes, if i'm sleeping on my back, and only if i'm doing so, i'll suddenly become aware that i'm sleeping and it feels as if my head is shaking and i'm stuck. if i try to yell or move i just go deeper into this scary circumstance. I usually concentrate HARD to wake myself up because i've become so used to it. Just one of these times though i'd like to ride it out and see what happens. Every time i've tried this though, i become too scared and wake myself up. Wierd, right?

I get it pretty often and i freak out everytime.

don't know where your getting the whole part that you have to be on your back cause it happens to me in every position, mostly on my side.

Anyway I will wake up, can't move but i can see and start freaking out cause i feel like im suffocating sometimes. I will try and focus all my will into screaming or at-least moving my arms but i don't think i have ever been able to get out of it. I just have to try and relax and go to sleep again as quickly as possible.

I have heard that it happens because when your in that state of sleep you breath a certain thing out or something.... Can't remember but it was in another thread like this.

Kind of off topic, but ...

Once I was having a dream ( I cant remember specifically ) And then i woke up and went to the bathroom at like 2. When i got back into bed I continued the dream in the exact same spot I left off. This is never happened to me since. Can anyone explain this to me?

Holy shit, I've been having that exact same thing like every night lately. It's right when I start falling asleep I go into a dream but I'm still awake. I can control my dream pretty well and then I normally wake up after a few minutes. Sometimes I'll have like 3 or 4 of those before I actually fall asleep for the night. I've been getting used to it and having fun with it.

This happened to me once while I was camping. I couldn't move and I could barely breath and I felt like I was slowly being dragged out of my sleeping bag. It freaked the shit out of me and I had no idea what was happening. I tried to yell out to my buddy but I just couldn't it freaked the shit out of me.
