Ski's help

Hey guys, this is probably one of the first of many threads i'll be making over the next (probably like) 9 months(ish). I been to excited to move back to BC and ski again, after living over seas for 7 years. I used to be HUGGEEEE into skiing when I was growing up, started when I was 1 1/2ish and skied pretty much every single weekend un till i was 12(grew up in Nelson BC, sick mountain I remember skiing my first double black diamond when i was like 10 and all that crap). I have been a huge ski fan, keeping up with all the movies, skiers, x-games you name it and its been tough especially since I cant even ski a single day a year, if I'm lucky I ski a single day every 2 years. Anyways long story short moving to Squamish next year so I will have a pass to Whistler.

So I probably wont be the most advanced skier when I first come back but I often learn VERY quickly. Anyways what I'm asking is what kind of ski should I start out with. I like powder and I like the backcountry and will be doing lots of that most likely but I also want to be able to do groomers and jumps which made me think that I should get 2 pairs of skis, one for powder and backcountry and one for park. Possibly getting a used pair of skis for park (as i will probably fuck them up with bailing heaps) and then getting a nicer new pair of skis for some powder. The thing is I dont want to limit skis to just powder, I'd also like to ski groomers and stuff but I wouldn't take them on rails or in the park. What do you guys think about this idea and would you have any tips or anything like that for me?

TLDR; haven't skied in 7 years, deciding on what kind of skis to get when I move to Whistler next year, used pair of park and new powder skis. thoughts on this?

Thanks for any replies I know its a lot to read and its probably not that interesting but any response will help. Thanks guys :)

I think it's a great idea. For powder/groomers, I would go with 4FRNT MSP. It's a super versatile ski, and it's got a width of 96, so still floaty in pow. I've heard super good things about them, and I have a friend who rides them and absolutely loves them. I ride 4FRNT switchblades, different ski entirely, but I'm very happy with the quality.

as for the park, if you're gonna buy used its mostly dependent on what you can find. Just don't buy line.

I have a pair of Nordica Ace of Spades, they're pretty good, and decently flexy. my switchblades are super nice, and a little stiffer, which is what i want for jumps. i hear atomic punx are sick, and armada makes some quality stuff, halos and ar7 for example.

hope this helps.

While I can't offer the most detailed advice on which specific ski(s) to purchase; this does seem like a very solid idea. I'm stuck on the East until at least next year. The thought of skiing pow is like waiting to turn 21. So close, so awesome, but so far away...

Wow thanks for the great reply, fairly detailed. +k for sure and I will have to be thinking about this, I will start researching more on 4FRNT. I always liked the brand but I never really knew the difference between what brands make more for powder skis and those that make it for park.

I will keep an eye out for some good used park skis so we'll just see how this goes. For the meantime thanks a lot for the reply!

@610 I know exactly what you mean, except for me its with skiing. If I been waiting for skiing for 7 years I know you'll be able to wait for some sick powder!!! So close yet so far man, we're almost there! :)

are you sure you want your powder skis to be your groomer skis there are some park skis that work pretty well for groomers.

Well it wasn't so much that I wanted my powder skis to be my groomer skis as well, but I wanted to be able to ski groomers on them comfortably with them. The reason that being is that I dont want to drop a shitload of cash on a pair of new powder skis and ONLY use them in powder yet shred with a used pair more often. I just don't want to limit them to something so specific. Do you think I should be getting a new pair of groomers/park/jump skis and then buy a used pair of powder skis?

Hey man. For your powder/groomers I would suggest the Majesty Dirty Bears. Sick graphics, sick ski, highly reccomend these. I have them and love them. http://www.majestyskisusa.com/dirty-bear/

For your park I would suggest the Majesty Comic's. These are some of freeskier magazine's editor pick skis, which isn't necessarily easy to attain. http://www.majestyskisusa.com/comic/

If you are at all interested, my public code, JW2012, will get you 25% off of all products from www.majestyskisusa.com

Check them out

The graphics on those ski's actually look pretty sick. I haven't heard much about majestyskis yet but its always a good option to know about them. Are you a rep for them?

I use bibbys with the original design for allmtn and they get it done way better than I ever imagined. let alone on the ice coast

They sponsor me, and one of the perks is that code. And their skis are sick. Not just the graphics but the skis themselves as well. Glad your interested and feel free to use/pass that code around.

I ride ON3P Caylors as my pow/backcountry ski, and they are sick, they can charge, make tight turns in the trees, chunder through the crud and ski groomers no problem. These skis are so stable at speed (CHARGING) but are still so playful. They may feel heavy to hold but when they're on your feet they feel light and are full of pop. I would recommend them as anybody's pow/backcountry ski
