i dunno how far you plan on skinning/hiking, but i tell everyone who wants a BC ski this. you dont need a huge ski to ski BC. seriously, a huge waist is actually gonna be a bitch and a half to drag around. like i said earlier, if your hiking for like an hour, its fine. but a day trip, id definitly want somethin in the 90 range.

for most of these guys BC is hitting the trees between two green trails

AK is righton...wide skis + skins = HEAVY

plus wide is a bitch to sidehill skin with

and its tough to find a pack that will carry a 120mm wide board...

I use the cheifs with a naxo binders for skinning big terrain

but when i snowmobile i use my seth's or maidens...

 
I use my ARV's if its freshies, or just my trouble makers if im carrying them for an hour on my shoulder.

 
I've been using pocket rockets for a few years. Just sold em to get the new 1080 GUN. 175 length and 90 underfoot works great for me. they're pretty soft and flexible but I'm west coast so I like em. East coast you'll probably want something stiffer.

if you want a ski for strictly pow then go for the prophet 130. had a chance to try it last season in ellicotville ny in 3ft of fresh and they were awesome! better than the vicious in pow but not all mountain.

there an older ski, but they rip up the backcountry, the K2 outlaws, plus they have a cowboy on the topsheet. They are ill. Oh yeah and there brad holmes signature model. Way sick ski, bro, way sick

 
i would say piostols or vixious, anything wit like a 90-100mm waist. akfreeride said on a pos t somewhere that its really bad skinning with gigantic skis on

what kind of backcountry are you talking about here? Are you looking for a ski to put a pair of touring bindings on or a pair to just carry over your shoulder for an hour?

 
To anyone saying that phat skis are to heavy to drag around in the BC must be a stinky hippy. Think about it, why wallow around out there? You can surf the pow you are searching out.

I have people in the shops laugh at me when I get 130mm wide skins and then even out there in the BC. I do the laughing when I blow by those skinny ski folks, who are spending some time climbing out of their crash tub.

If you think I am retarded than you need to hit the stair master or ride your bike to hike like a man on the real deal setup.

 
why do you think he's stupid? the elizabeths were made for backcountry booters and being that thats what this person wants to do it makes sense to me

thanks for all the feedback, i just looked at the jp vs julien and am leaning that way. the reason i liked those was the weight, they were soo light but at the same time didnt have a flimsy flex pattern. i love line skis and have been skiing on them for 5 years, but i think that 172 is too short for actually skiing powder.

 
ever think that you have to get out to the backcountry before you can hit stuff in it?? unless he has a snowmachine, those are going to be major bitches to drag and skin up somethin.
