ski's and bindings?

I'm debating what kind of skis to get. I am not going to spend too much money. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the atomic m:8's for $500 and a pair of volant machete's for 180. If i get the volants, i have a choice of what binding to get. I can get my hands on a pair of s810ti's for 125. I am a really light guy. I only weigh 155, and i'm 5'10. I ride pretty aggressively. I almost never hit the park, but like dropping off of big things. any input would be great. thanks a bunch

 
dude, light guy alright, I'm 5'11 and I only weigh 130. As for the skis I think you should broaden your horizons a little more cause I would reccomend something different than those 2.

i'm open to anything, these are just two of my many options. I jusdt mentioned those becasue i can get them for cheap. but I really would like any input possible.

 
I weight the same as you, I ski mostly all mountain, I dabble a little in the park. I really love my pocketrockets they are 175cm so its still good for parkin and pipin' and has plenty of float. I think they ski well for light people like us (good flex n such) and you can almost always find a deal on those skis if you call around.

thanks a lot, and as for bindings, would you still suggest the salomon 810 ti's or would i be better off with something else?

 
Atomics tend to be pretty stiff and snappy due to their racing heritage. So if you like a ski that won't mind some serious bucking around, go for it.

I'd look into Rossignol, the Bandit series especially. X, XX, XXX - all depends on where you ride. But thats a solid and time-proven ski, and with Rossi's warranty I wouldn't worry about problems at all.

Dynastar also makes some serious all mountain bruisers. They've got some great options especially for someone like you.

Where/what conditions do you ride? Knowing that will help narrowing down ski selection big time.

I live in california, and mostly ride in tahoe at squaw and alpine. I like doing really steep technical things, that require fast turns. I'm a big fan of drops. I almost never go to the park.

 
Well I bought the s810 ti's just to save a buck or tow. I thought everything was cool untill the last few days I've been riding park and I was ejecting just making hard carves when they were set at 8. So I cranked em up a lil bit to 9.5 and I still pop out when I crash, I do feel like they are a ejecting a little prematurely though sometimes I feel like I could ride out my crashes if they wouldnt pop out. But it's your call next bindings I get will be the s9-12's. I hear its dangerous to have your bindings at the highest setting (that they dont work properly). Its your call what do you have your bindings set at normally?

also, I found some x-wave 7.0's for 200 on sale at a store near me. should I jump on them before they're gone?

 
I'm on the lighter side, and I tend to ride smoothly. Usually a 6 or 7 works. SOMETIMES i'll push it up to 8. but now that I'm buying my own gear, i'll be riding more, and getting better. maybe it's worth it to jump the extra $ for the 912's

I know what your problem is. This is why I'm against Salomon bindings. When I had my S810 Ti's they would do the same thing. So after alot of experimenting I figured it out. The wings on the toe piece wiggle loose after repeated bashings.

Now this problem was persistent for me, and I didn't cure it for good until I cranked both the toe and heal piece against my boot, and turned up the DIN. Which isn't safe...

For bindings...

Go LOOK or Rossi. I've had the best luck with them. The only problem I have had is brake trouble, but thats only after repeated bashings in the park on hard snow. So if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much. LOOK/Rossi's one downside, especially for you, is getting them back on in powder. Since the binding has a tigher design you have to be more precise to get back on. But you'll get over that minor detail real quick.

If you want indestructible bindings go with LOOK Z-Race, all metal super simplistic design. But that might be overkill for a smaller ride like you. I'd suggest a P14/P12, or a Power140/180. A race binding would be best as they tend to be the stronger bindings.

Yeah no prob, It's always scary when its time to buy new skis because you have to live with your choice whether you like it or not. From now on I'm not gonna skimp on bindings I think its worth it to just buy a pair thats gonna last and gonna save your legs. You can always just unscrew them and remount them on future skis so it pays to get good. On the other hand if you keep them on 6-7 and you ski agressivley without them ejecting I wouldn't put them much higher. I'm not sure if my bindings are getting screwed up or if I'm just skiing a lot harder than I used to. Either way one thing to consider when buying the pocketrockets is how horribly they chatter, They chatter so bad I ejected the other day. You should look into the rossignol B2's or B3's I hear great things about them.

For those boots, if they are comfy, go for it. Don't buy them just because they're cheap - MAKE SURE they fit well. ie - try them on.

id say look at the dynastar legend 8000 for snappy turns but 79 at the waist or even the 4800 around 74 at the waist i think

or for something wider Armada ARV,Dynastar Legend 8800 both around 90 at the waist

id definately jump of the x-wave 7s or any technica icon/diablo around that price

for binding any look/rossis are good or the salomon s 912...good luck

I'd probably be better off with the looks z-race, the power 140/180's, or the p14/12.

and for the boots, after making sure that they fit well, I will probably end up with the x-wave's.

This sounds good, thanks for setting me in some kind of direction. just for clarity's sake, I should ditch the volants?

 
I'd ditch the Volants... not that they're a bad ski, they're just a bit behind the times. You're better off getting a ski from a solid company so you can be confident in its construction, and warranty.
