Skins??

ok this may be a newb, to the backcountry, question but what are skins?? how do they work? and what are they used for? **I live east coast and im guessing they are used for powder skiing...

skins are used by backcountry skiers to basically walk up a trail. they are pieces of fabric with glue that temporarily stick onto the bases of your ski. on the other side facing the snow there are hairs which prevent you from sliding backwards, hencing the "walking up a trail" deal. it's pretty much the best way of getting around in the bc but you need an AT or tele setup for it. go to www.blackdiamondequipment.com and you'll see some pics and a more accurate description of them.

 
^he's got it, imagen a lot of tiny hairs all going one direction, so the grip one way but can slide the other, makes getting to the top of a mountain a lot easier.
