Skins - US Adaptation WHY

I know that the exec producer is still one of the two creators of the original and that they've worked hard to 'translate' the show to the US, but JESUS CHRIST that first episode was a disgrace!

What is it with the US TV market that everything has to be adapted?! Coupling, Top Gear, The Office, Skins and countless other shows that usually bomb horribly because - get it? - the adaptation loses what the original had going for it! Fuck this shit.

Maybe I should rephrase that. I listed known good shows from the UK that have been adapted, and continued with "and countless other shows, that have bombed horribly."

In a sense, yes, The Office US also bombed horribly as the first episodes copying the original exactly were tear-inducingly horrific to watch, and when the show deviated from that and just started being silly and idiotic and everybody thinking 'Oh, what EVER will Dwight do next? Maybe he'll be dressed as a ninja!', it was not The Office anymore.

and icantskiifilm, sorry, didn't find your thread.

well you're the idiot for thinking that MTV was going to produce a good show... they should stick to guidos and pregnant 16 year olds.

You want to know the fucked up and rediculous part about those shows? Teenage girls are purposly trying to get pregnant so that they can get on that show. What in the fucking world is wrong with society?

you complain that it was at first exactly the same as the original, then complained because it became very different then the original. i don't care what people say, the new office is great, and while it was not too great the past few seasons, this current season is awesome.

the office is great, both the UK version and the US version. they both have different humor styles, and they both have their respective audiences. the humor in the UK is vastly different than the humor here, so it calls for two different shows

Uh, your point?

As I said, exactly trying to copy the original's humor failed catastrophically, so they pretty much changed the whole show and in my mind not for the better but for some random, oddball humor and lots of screaming and Krasinski still trying SO HARD to copy those single, yet elegant awkward glances at the camera of Freeman. But still all under "The Office" brand. This is why I think it's stupid.

The US Office, bad? No. Comparable to UK Office? No way. The one good thing is that there are a lot of talented people involved and I believe they can make something trule great and original after the show (hopefully soon) ends.

Mind you, I have not seen the French, German, Québec, Chilean, Israeli or Brazilian versions.

i watched this show last night and honest to god it was the stupidest thing i'd ever seen in my life

it was snowing at the party, and then all of a sudden they're in shorts and teeshirts the next day and swimming in water without getting hypothermia? get real.

stupid plot, bad actors, horrible show

As a joke, heh, you're funneh.

If serious, claiming a sex position (the most boring one at that) to as a product of the United States is so idiotic (and 'stereotypically' American, like patenting human genome) that someone should slap you in the face.

someone should slap you in the face for even considering that was serious... you dumb you'reapeein

OMG RIGHT?!?!
i seriously cried when i saw that mtv was making a version of skins. holy shit, the UK version ruled, not just because of the stuff they did or said but because it was like real...mtv can't show 3/4 of the shit that the other version did. waaaahhh and none of the characters are the same, no more chris or sid :(
poop poop poop, i hate to be immature but i get so fucking angry when people in my classes are like:

"OMGZZ DID YOU WATCH TEH SKINS LAST NIGHT, HOLY SHIT SOOO WILD AND KEWLZZ"

am i wrong for wanting to freak out? at least someone agrees. MTV RUINS EVERYTHING!

if there's one thing i can't stand, it's when haughty, perpetually outraged types paint something piggish or irritating as "American". It's a big fucking country. By calling stupid chauvinism stereotypically American, you're basically just doing the exact thing you love to get so outraged at.

10/10. Freeman and Gervais nailed it like nobody else could. It seems like the US version stopped trying and instead went for broad, slap-stick humour (ie. Parkour).

Well, you're welcome :) Hence the 'stereotypically' as in how people from the US are the butt of jokes where they talk about owning stuff and how everything is so big in their country yada yada.. I guess we now got it covered that the line was actually from a movie making fun of stereotypical rednecks, so I believe I've come full circle here.

erp, missed the quotation marks and that sort of pissed me off. should have known better from a usually solid member, i guess years of looking at obnoxious pigheaded comments on pinkbike trained me to yell at broad sweeping anti-americanism

I haven't watched this, but I can agree. My friends watched a bunch of episodes on Netflix and loved it, and then my girlfriend watched it on MTV and said it was the dumbest show on tv.

i hate how people generalize the term anyway.

yea there's retarded people here, but no more here than in any other country.

The different regions hold completely different types of people anyway... Americans are not 1 group but many different groups that hold different people.

thats like me saying that the UK is stupid... because you all basically talk the same right?

fuck you

Well, you just seem to belong in the GROUP of people of AMERICANS, who imply that someone is an idiot for not knowing a quote from a relatively obscure (overseas) comedy, not bringing anything of importance to a conversation as to why there's a prevalence of adapting foreign shows to the US market, which in many cases fans of the originals watch in utter dismay, and finally, ending your statements with a healthy dose of the most original of insults under the Sun, 'fuck you'. You really got me there, buddy, OWW, straight to the heart...!

As to thesheik, all the people I know personally from the US are, not suprisingly, nothing like the common stereotypes that one sucking on the teet of mass media interpretations or Internet pseudonym behavior would lead to believe. I even have faith in skiierman as an IRL person. ;D

my point is that you complained about it being the exact same, then complained about it deviating from the show. it's under "The Office" brand because the initial concept of the show is the same. so what if they made it different? i think we can both agree that a show that was similar, or even the same, as the British show would not be nearly as successful or enjoyable. even if you prefer one over the other, you can still watch both versions without feeling like you're watching the same show, and that, for me, is a good thing

I see where you're coming from, no doubt. I think it's imperative to start checking out those Israeli etc. versions too see how they fare.

this is non-ski gabber. thats what you do in this forum...discuss things that aren't ski related.

oh, isnt that ironic. YOU look like the whiny bitch for bitching at this thread topic. good job contradicting yourself

now move along, bitch

i'm not sure how it was perceived, but i'm sorry if my post came across at all hostile. was not my intention. and yeah, it would definitely be interesting to compare that alongside the US and UK versions

Your right this is nsg, it seems you have a firm grip on the obvious, but that doesn't mean someone isn't going to get some hate for complaining about something as trivial as an MTV show.
