I'm thinking about getting some skins for this season, to be used most likely on my spatulas for this season, but then probably something more verstile the following year, say a 100mm waist. Should i buy some super fat skins now and just trim them if i get a thinner touring ski?
 
oh, compound the problem in that i'd probably want to use the same skins on a sub-90 waist, but that's a maybe, i'm not sure if i would tour with those skis
 
Ya sure why not, although im not sure how youre going to trim skins to fit spatulas then a regular ski....The skins on the spatulas would be super narrow in the front. I had skins on my maidens and then I cut them down to scratch bc's, something like that would work. But not from a spat to a regular sidecut ski.
 
I don't think you can use the same skins on a 100mm and 90mm waist unless you trim them to less than 90mm, but I think that would just give you problems with the fatter skis. When you get skins, you basically have to trim them for one pair of skis. If you want to put them on another pair, they either have to be the same dimensions or smaller in every way except length.
 
Also spatulas would fucking suckkk for skiing. you would hardly get any purchase from your skins because the only part of the ski really contacting the snow is under your foot. The skins would pretty much be worthless on tip and tail. That and you would have no edge hold on sidehilling any type of hard snow.
 
thanks for the input guys, the spats tips are pretty much the same size as my other skis (mid 120's) I think i'm going to buy some 120mm skins and just trim accordingly. I anticipate the spats sucking for skinning, but this will be my first year doing so and they're the best ski I have for actually coming down the mountain in bc conditions. Hopefully I'll be buying a more touring friendly ski next season with an AT binding. Thinking scratch bc's or if i'm lucky maybe some gun labs, though I don't know much about touring skis, so maybe you guys can put some input on that.

I didn't feel like reading all of that so if you want to make it simplier I can help you out. Im just in a lazy mode right now.

And skin size = should be enough to cover everything but the edges. I go 130mm skins on my gots, but I think 120mm would have been ok.
 
no not waist. A lot of people base it by tail. You want almost complete coverage. The only part you want exposed is the edges.

What ski are you looking for? Most fatter pow skis do fine with a 120mm skin (which is actually on sale on steepandcheap right now). I went 130 for complete coverage. 120 would have been fine though.
 
well, for my spatulas, also for my brother who has k2 axis xp's. I was looking at steepandcheap, that's why i want to buy today.
 
On spats 120 would be fine. Buy them if they are still available and then throw an STS tail kit on the skin.

Remember with spats, because they are reverse camber, skinning on a hard track they will lose grip as the ski doesn't touch the snow as much as a normal ski.

Are you planning on throw touring bindings on them?

I know a few people who do it and love it for the most part. A little heavy, but worth it on the way down.
 
i'd love to get some at bindings but i'm thinking about just treckers for this season (i know they don't compare to AT bindings) but i'm only going to do short skins mostly from resort boundries, a la upper tiger's tail. I'm hoping to get a full at setup next season, likely with a different ski too.

Do i need a tail kit for the spats?

How well will AT bindings compare if I were to slap them on the spats which are mostly used for lift service pow?
 
the 120's are gone, i'm pretty sure 110 wouldn't cut it on spats. Also, am I going to need top of the line AT binders to handle the width of the spats, torsionally?
 
get a tail kit for sure. they cost like $20. worth it is your skin glue it being a bitch.

Touring with spats and trekkers will be a work out for sure. It is possible though.

If you get a straight AT setup get a more versatile ski.

AT bindings on spats will be ok. Two problems though - 1) higher up on the ski - changes the way they slide a bit. 2) because they are so heavy there is a lot of stress put on the bindings when skining steep sidehills or when kick-turning. Some people have broken them when kick turning.

If I were you I would get tour on spats with trekkers. Get a tail kit (get the STS one) for sure. Then get a different ski with real touring bindings next year.
 
thanks iggy, that's what i was thinking, is getting the 110 skins worth it? price is good, but coverage would be sacrificed
 
i'm looking at doing basically the same thing. trekkers this year and at setup next season. is it ok not to trim the skins so i can use them on the skis i get next season?
 
yeah, unfortunately the 120's are gone. Does slippage suck enought to spend the extra almost 100 bucks to get 120's or 130's?

Speaking of which, would i be better off with 130's for the spats now that I can't get the deal on 120's?
 
don't need 130 on spats. They are wider than any part of the ski.

110 on spats will leave a lot of space. 120 is the right size.

Those 110 are $65, then $5 shipping, then $25 for STS tail. So $95 total really, so I would just wait for a 120mm for the spats. You can probably find them for a little more than you would pay for the now.
 
in my opinion, your going to die when trying to tour with spats. its gonna be a bitch and a half. if you plan on really touring, like the whole day, those are gonna be fuckers on you. trying to stride with a reverse sidecut....i cant imagine. but good luck.
 
it can and has been done. Some people like it a lot.

It would be a lot of ski on the way up, but the ride down would be awesome. Reverse sidecut isn't a problem unless you are on a steep traverse....in which case it will be horrible.
 
just buy the biggest ones you can find and cut them out to the shape and size of your ski, can u say CUSTOMMMM
 
exposed base sucks....definetly worth it to get perfect covereage...I paid 140$for my BCA skins for a pair of 188 chiefs...I have used skins that dont cover enough of the ski and it is nearly impossible to sidehill on steep terrain...slippage sucks, especially on STEEP sidehills in wet snow...

I say get the right size for the spats the extra 50 bucks is worth it
 
^^ I use the Naxo system and they kick ass...

better binding than the Fritchi system (I used to own a pair of freerides before switching)...
