Skiing's Downfall

I am new to the forum, but what I have noticed in the past few months of being a member is that most people have lost the 'sprit' of skiing if you will. To me, I always believed that skiing was you and the mtn, nothing else. When a close friend of mine was always killed I had no where to turn but to my skiis. I just threw on some headphones and threw shit down. Granted it was not the best but it was just be and mtn, nothing else. The second you start worrying about sponsers, what this kid can do or can't do or any of the bullshit, I believe it is time to sell your skiis and hang up your boots. If you ask any pro there only focus in life is skiing. They don't give a fuck what 'oakely' or any other companies does, they are sponsered because they rip the mtn becasue they love it. NOTHING ELSE. They don't ski for money or fame but because they love it and have devoted their lives to the sport. The point is, stop worrying about others and just ski. Otherwise, there is not point in you skiing at all.

Skiing is never a sport, but a lifestyle.

Some people question 'why' and wonder 'how'. They just can't seem to grasp 'how' or 'why' we do what we do. Others don't understand, they just continue to wonder. The truth of the mater is that we can't explain it either. All we can say is 'snow so deep you sink up to your hips', 'hits so big you can't see the landing', 'rails with all kinds of bends and kinks', 'natural cliffs and tree runs that you can't explain with any other word than sick' and still they don't understand what we do. On a board or skiis, it is the same. A feeling of freedom and expression in a way so uncommon. But still, they don't understand....

Megs, a good friend of mine says: 'Feel the fear, and do it anyway.' When you do, than you will understand.'

Although i agree with what you said, i can defend some people by saying the season is over and we're all grumpy because of it.

Although what you said is somewhat true, you have to realize that of all of the 'extreme sports' I've done, skiings the best in that regard. Go to www.skateboarding.com, and their message boards, people are so obsessed with being sponsored that as soon as they can ollie their out looking for someone to sponsor them...

This is true, but that is what makes skiing so special. We have to realize what skiing is truely about and why we do it. It is all about the love, nothing more, nothing less...

Yeah I kind of pointed this out back in February in an article rant I wrote. It really isn't becaue the end of the season, it's just some people don't care much for the intangible things in life and are always chasing after the material things, cars, money, houses, skiis, shoes, McDonalds ad spot... And they've always been around. I was lucky enough to have talked to the godfather of modern skateboarding, Tony Alva, on a couple of occasions, i.e. I walked into his skate shop a couple times, he was working that day so I shot the shit... But he felt skateboarding was on a down slip b/c of the situation where people are chasing after sponsorships over self enjoyment, this coming from the guy who basically invented the sposorship as we know it. But that's what happens when you put big corporate sponsorships on the table, we need to have our skiier run companies take charge, or we're going to have an early dark age...

^couldn't have put it in better words.

some pros care about oakley and sponsers. Tanner Hall helooo! that fucker is all ghettoed out trying to look good while he shpould be throwing twister spreads. GT is where its at anybody who throws rodeo sevens wearing a neon multi color onepiece is more of a badass skier than you or I or anyone will ever be.

correction- more of a wierd ass drunken (and might i say overrated) skier than you or I or anyone will ever be

but despite all rpos or what tanner does or who throws down or cares about sponsers This Is What Skiing Is :

Yes they care about sponsers, but that is not why they ski... If there was no sponsers, they would still have no job and be out there ripping peak regardless of $$ or sponsers.

i dont know if i believe this, you cant say that these people would be out there with the same intensity if they didnt have sponsers and make money, i can tell you right now that there are people out there that wouldnt ski if they didnt make money and get there gear for free. im right and thats the bottom line

Hell yahh. im up in the motha fucka

the big bonus' oakley and ski companys give for podium spots is why they ski so hard. Sponsorship pushes the sport. Look back before everyone was all nuts about getting sponsored, as little as ten years ago, the sport was moving like a turtle. Sure go ski for yourself, but maybee if you knew you were gona get $10,000 you'd ski a little harder.

Very true. But that is the pros, not 99% of newschoolers....

^well give him a cookie. Listen you ski for yourself, but, sponsorship is the life. Getting paid to ski, not working at fucking pizza hut so you can buy your own pass.

Strode420 - 'The devil created science...'

yummy, tim gives people cookies, want one? yea sponsors are dope, but don't ski just for em, just ski for the passion and you'll prob end up with one

i ski with just as much passion, and i probably ski more than like 80% of people on this site. i love skiing, im attatched to it, its part of who i am now and ill never be able to let it go. but ill never get a deal with a ski company. not because im too cool, but because im not good enough, and i never will be. and i dont care.

one reason you might worry about sponsores is because your mountain sucks and you are to poor to go to camp or ski at a good mountain. but the only reason to get a sponsor would be so that you can ski at other places because you dont have to worry about equipment if you do. just ski to ski dont do it for any other reason

will you be my mommy-ralph wiggins

if i was to get payed to ski. it woudl be great.. if i lived in my car and ate goverment cheese. and washed myself with those little wash pads.. id still ski somehow.. i think soem people get obessed wiht sponsers and they are not obessed with skiing. skiing is a job to them,, gets them what they want. they mite not find any pleaser of gettign first tracks on a pow day and stopping at the bottom and lookign up at your line... and thininking. how awsome life is right here in the now.. GOD I LOVE SKIING>>>>>>

Although what you said is very insightful, it is true that mostly everyone on here is just dicking around and not being serious at all. Or, they are just trying to create a good thread to gossip on. If every thread was like this, the site wouldn't exist.....

And while I do not ski for money or anything like that, is it bad if someone does? Perhaps your motivation is for 'the lub' but for other people maybe it is something else.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.
