Skiing with a drone

Does anyone here bring drones skiing? If so, what backpack do you use? I’m trying to find a good backpack to bring my drone skiing.

it’s illegal to fly at pretty much every ski resort due to potential interference with medial helis/crashing into lifts/etc. only way around this is being part 107/333 liscensed and getting specific permission from the resort

the only time I’ve brought my drone on hill for an after-hours shoot @mammoth I ate shit while skiing down holding the big pelican case with both arms kinda blocking my vision, and it tumbled down another 100+ft, super thankful it was in a tough pelican case. If you bring up a tiny mavic or something you can just toss it in a camera bag, seems like they take up barely more space than a big 70-200 or similar

That’s crazy, that would be such a shitty feeling skiing back down to the case wondering what it looks like inside. I’m thinking of flying around a jump in a spot near the resort— not in it, so I shouldn’t run into legal issues. Right now I have a cheap metal case that I keep my drone in at home but I’ve been looking at backpacks because the case isn’t that portable. From what I’ve seen the nicest option is the lowepro droneguard 450 pro but that’s like $280 so I’m thinking about getting the polar pro drone trekker backpack. It’s nothing crazy but it looks like it might be nice enough to carry for a little while. Also I wish I had a mavic, those things are so sick.

nah that thought didn’t even cross my mind, that’s the beauty of pelicans. I bet it gets treated just as shitty when flying with it as a checked bag unfortunetly, but the contents inside are always perfectly fine in the foam

what drone are you flying with? the size/shape/value makes a big difference on what type of transport makes the most sense

Those pelican cases seem really nice, I’m using a p3 pro.

hmm that’s tricky due to how boxy phantoms are, can’t really toss it in a normal backpack either. I’ve seen people strap phantoms to the back of their backpacks, I’ve done the same with my inspire folded flat while hiking (not in snow) just gotta be careful

also despite a mavic being smaller, you’re not gaining anything video quaility-wise if you were to switch from a P3pro. Since anything but the X5s have a fixed aperture, get a good ND filter or two and that will make a huge difference in how your footage looks
