Skiing will always be 5 years behind snowboarding

tranny finding, gapping to rails, dramatic pressing, and nasty stale fish grabs were the cats pajamas in the snowboarding scene 5 years ago. And now it's just starting to peak in popularity in skiing these past few years!

We can all agree that skiing with always be 5 years behind snowboarding.

Just look at the facts!!! Big time pro's like henrik harlaut, jossi wells, tom wallisch all snowboard in there spare time when they aren't skiing!

The key to being a good skier is to snowboard as much as possible.

discuss.

What? Who cares? Skiing and snowboarding are different, the grabs and everything is styled and used differently , this is just another annoying SNOWBOARDING VS SKIING post . No one cares if we are ahead of or behind snowboarding.

No, but i agree with you on the fact that skiing is behind snowboarding. Also, there's a bung of guys in snowboarding that focus only on urban and filming video parts, which is certainly caused by the influence of skateboarding, while in skiing there isn't much people besides Stept and a couple of other skiers that focus only on producing segments

Wizard tricks, 1 footers, quads have been done before and now air pretzels??

I agree that snowboarding has influenced skiing, but in no way is it 5 years ahead of skiing.

Tricks are still being created today and we have kids spinning into the future... 1980? WTF? I love both and we should feed off eachother, but skiing is the best and it always will be. /claim /thread

You don't watch snowboarding. 1 footers have been the thing in snowboarding for many, many years. 5 years might be a stretch, but snowboarding is definitely the trendsetter between the two sports.

eh, in the park scene yeah it's been like that and still is, but to a lesser extent than it used to be

BC stuff though i don't agree. besides a handful of super pros like travis rice, i think we win in the BC by a nose, if for no other reason than we go faster and do gnarlier lines

..accidentally hit enter early

...anyway, correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think there are any snowboarders that charge quite as hard as ian mac or seth morrison for example

Let's hear it then. I mean freeskiing as in riding switch, doing grabs, rails etc. Not Wayne Wong and hotdogging/ballet.

instead of commenting on others comments why don't you create your own statement, pussy?

Sure snowboarders can unstrap a foot, and skiiers can take off a ski, but only skiiers can actually use one foot on features (other than presses). that's not only innovative but it requires skill... why don't you stand up for your sport, instead of replying to others comments? (pussy)

Snowboaridng is dope

Skiing is dope

Heres a good little note for everyone whos one sided. I lived with Kieran Mcveigh last winter in CO, and more often than not he was watching a snowboarding/stakeboarding edit, not a skiing edit. Bradshaw specifically. Now on NS he is regarded as having some of the most innovative tricks and style. Where do you think he gets his inspiration from??

Yes we take a lot from snowboarding because it'll always be freskiings older brother. A little more mature and ahead of the game because well its been around that much longer. Obviously skiing has some of its own unique ideas and tricks, screamin semen for example, but really a lot comes from snowboarding. They have had the years to progress their sport that we havent so it makes sense that those ideas came into their sport before ours. Its common sense.

But its not really worth arguing about. Its just how it is. Not going to change how i try to progress and have fun on the hill. Watching skiing and snowboarding can do that.

I can't love both snowboarding and skiing? And this is a forum, the whole basis of the thing is to reply to other people's comments lol

Jeremy Jones might not be front flipping 100 footers or charging huge double stagers but definitely rides bigger, steeper, more technical, high concequence lines with more fluidity and style. Can't really compare Jeremy jones to any skier really. Maybe Hugo

Here's glen plake doing an uncrossed mute grab a long time ago, 1990(?)

this ones a bit iffy, but here's John Eaves doing probably the first switch trick (1977)

Snowboarding was first with rails but really, when you think about skiing is (as far as I know) the first sport to do any sort of tricks that won't get you mocked today. In the early 70's people were throwing 3's while snowboards were still made of plywood and urethane skateboard wheels were brand new.

---------------------------------------------------------

In terms of today it's really kind of up in the air whos ahead (aside from fashion in which case it goes Skateboarding > Snowboarding > Skiing)

yeah j jones is the man for sure, but then who's next in snowboarding after him? i think skiing in general in straight big mtn has the lead ever so slightly. don't get me wrong, i fucking love snowboarding and pay attention to it, im just saying we're sure as fuck not 5 years behind them in big mtn (except tricks in lines like t rice)

snowboarders can ride no footed. they do kickflips and other skate tricks without being strapped into bindings.

I may be wrong. But I thought skiing brought the more steezy dubs / futurespins to the scene? Ala Jon with his kangaroo flip or that first switch ten that was done at xgames (im thinking T.J's)? That is a pretty big trend in skiing and snowboarding these days. Skiing seems to progress the more spin to win / competition oriented tricks ahead of snowboarding.

Jeremy Jones is a beast and he's pushing backcountry riding to new levels but in terms of pure big mountain skiing/riding he's not at the level of a lot of big mountain skiers and even some other borders.

Skateboard -> Snowboarding -> Skiing

Of course this doesn't apply for everything but as far as style, tricks, clothes, trends etc. are concerned, this is the way it is.

It's always good to get inspiration from others sports, others environments and others cultures !

Why do you need to compare skiers to snowboarders? It's like the sexy toned chick with awesome curves comparing herself to some unhealthy stick figure model. It doesn't make sense...

i thought the standard was 3 years, not 5. regardless, you're right, we always have been and always will be a little bit behind as a whole. BUT i will say that the few people that "get it" are catching up, and quickly.

i agree with all of this except your and OP's claim that it will always be that way.. that's almost def not true IMO

being "behind" is mostly a function of time, being around for shorter or longer. why do you think skateboarding is where it is? it's had time to mature and branch out-- proof of this is that it's plateaued enough so that people can film 2 year parts without worrying so much that things will have changed so much in 1.5 years that itll be dated. skiing and snowboarding are still in their growth stages enough that the vast majority of people cannot do 2 year projects

you guys don't think snowboarding was lightyears behind skiing in a lot of ways for its first 10 years or so? in 1995, who do you think was more impressive and experienced in cliffs, jumps, speed, lines, turning?

skiing and snowboarding will always have their individual (tiny) pros and cons but for the most part it'll all level out soon

But will skiing ever plateu?

New tricks and pressures to try them are making the sport extremely dangerous. Do you think we will see a quad cork next season?

i obv don't mean it's completely flat and not progressing...come on you knew that

it's just not progressing at break neck speed like any sport does in its first decade

imagine if in 2003 a skier released a video they had filmed in 2001 and 2002..the 2001 footage would almost definitely not hold up

yeah there are lots of things that snowboarding had done a while before skiers did, but no one in the snowboarding community is doing nose butters. nose butters are starting to be a huge trend in skiing. but i admit that it wont be long before snowboarding starts to do nose buttrers
