and so the debate of public vs. private education ensues...
in my opinion (let me state that outright so people don't bitch at me), those who receive a private education are at an advantage upon graduation when entering the market for a job. Let's say a colleague and I are competing for the same job, with similar GPA's/extra-cirriculars/etc... but my degree says Bentley and theirs says Umass. in all likelihood, i'll get the job simply because of the name, nothing else. that's not meant to be degrading, that's just how things work in big business. i pay for the name and i'm damn proud of it.
the educational experiences vary, as you at UMass might have 250 kids in a class, where I at Bentley have 35 max. There is value in personal interaction with professors (and i'm not saying that interaction with professors at a public school is impersonal as it is at the discretion of the student to get to know their professor). The quality of person also varies. At Bentley, there are a lot more students who focus on education and care so much about grades than there MIGHT be at UMass. Private universities are so selective because they want the best student body possible.
