I have been a skier for 12 years, but i snowboarded for 2 of those 12. Ive been a subscriber to freeze for 3 years and freeskier for 2,I own 5 ski movies, and have been visiting ns.com daily for nearly 2 years. As many of you can relate, over aLL this time i have soaked up more knowledge about skiing than anything else. i have kept and repeatedly read every ski mag i have ever bought, and i have memorized every ski movie i have ever seen. Its come to a point where i recognize everything i see in the mags and can identify every mtn i seen in the movies. I have seen every jump from every angle on both camera and video. Through all this i came to the conclusion that skiing is the most unique sport in existence. Then i bought a few issues of transworld snowboarding....
I went into shock; the adds in the magazine are the exact same as in freeze only with a snowboarding rider. The photo sections are full of the same jumps as in the freezer. The 2 sports are alomost the exact same but the magazines hide the other sport.
If you think about, pro skiers and boarders are all out sessioning and building hits together and progressing side by side. Yet in the magazines we read we only see one half of the experience.
For example when i see a backcountry booter in freeze, i think of it as something that only skiing can create but in reality pro skiers and boarders are out there side by side building and hitting the booters together. Then why is it in the magazines we only see half of the equation. Why arent there any combo ski/board mags. The 2 industries profit off of separating themselves from the other yet really they are so similar.
im not even sure if what i wrote makes sense, but if it does to you share your thoughts. I just wonder why skiing and boarding are made out to be so different in the magzines yet out on the the 2 sports are united.
