Skiing Under the Influence

Hey NS,

I have always pondered the connection between people who drink/smoke and ski, and a portion of those who portray this type of activity are putting down some really technical, big, and difficult tricks. Take a look at almost any hoodcrew video, and there is bound to be some piff in it. Are they doing their biggest tricks under the influence? This doesn't solely speak to them though, as you can see many other edits with this same kind of activity in it (Gremlinz, ect.).

Outside of the skiing world, you look at people like Antwaun Dixon, who is an incredible skater, and is know to almost always be high or drunk. People like Andrew Reynolds (another skater) say that under the influence of drugs or alcohol you can never reach your full potential. I am curious as to whether or not the NS community feels better, worse, or the same about their skiing abilities while under the influence. I am not saying I condone or support this activity, but i am very curious to learn how the rest of NS feels about this. So chime in with any opinions, stories, or whatever else comes to mind revolving around drinking/drugs and skiing.

I ski better/smoother when high but less likely to go big

I ski sloppy when drinking but generally go bigger

Personally I feel that the biggest part of skiing that is important is enjoying it how you wish to enjoy it.

So that can mean a variety of different experiences for a wide variety of different people. Sure, some might enjoy a little bit of the drink/smoke - hell some might enjoy more than that - but I'm also confident that there's a majorly equal amout of people on the other side who keep it straight up.

In the end, my opinion is that you should enjoy skiing however you choose to experience it. Putting it in a box where there's rules on how you should or shouldn't go about it is what made skiing lame in the past....

Go forth and discover your own path.

It's not really a matter of better or worse as much as it is just different. Jumping is better when you're sober and skiing rails is better when you're baked. Drunkenness is fun for spring slush.

I've never really noticed a huge difference in my skiing skill level whether I'm sober, drunk, or high. The only real difference I've noticed is that when I'm drunk I have a lot more courage to send it. When I'm high I probably have a little less courage than sober but the difference isn't as big as when I drink. Interestingly enough, even when I'm hammered I don't seem to get noticably worse at skiing, which is not what I would expect to happen.

Now I would like to point out that the TRUE founders of Freestyle - the dudes in the '60s - were likely high on a shitload of acid.

I never use prohibited drugs and I never want to use it 'coz I don't want to come to a point where my body will long for it! I drink alcohol sometimes when in slope though, but it feels much better to ride when you are in right control of your body and mind.

Not everything prohibited is addictive. That said I havnt skied under the influence before.

yea ok.

I used to ski high all the time. Drinking is fun because its super easy to pee on the mountain so you can drink a lot

one time i tried skiing under the influence of cannabis plant and i ended up going inside and buying a shit ton of food in the lodge for about an hour. But after that I learned how to hit my first rail so i guess it worked

which is also a load of fun to ski and get rowdy on. Definitely a different level of skiing goes down when LSD is involved :D

I feel like that while skiing high, I have a better ability to feel where I am in the air, on the rail, and just a better sense of myself overall. I use it to perfect my tricks while high, learn them while drunk.

No no no no no no and no.

When you're high, you THINK you ski way smoother and fucking rip those groomers, and THINK that that true tail on that 10footer was fucking huge and steezy. But actually, no. You probably look the same or a bit weird. And if you don't know how to land that trick, there's no way booze or weed is gonna help you visualise it and stomp it. If you do land a trick while high/drunk that you rarely land normally, it's definitely because of overconfidence from booze or complete lack of perception of danger from weed. But skiing under the influence will never help you land more technical tricks or look better on your edit.

However, fuck yeah ride high (just buzzed for me, otherwise i find it not that enjoyable) because it feels fucking awesome taking chilled laps or shredding some pow, as long as you don't take any big risks.

Unless im skiing in serious big mountain or something like that if Im just cruising around the resort drinking and skiing is so dam fun

I ski blazed all the time, definitely a lot of fun, and I don't think it makes stomping tricks any harder or any easier.

Im really excited to go skiing while on acid this winter

Towards the end of the night I'll get a little buzz going, never again will I get toasted though shit was just dangerous

trying skiing on acid at least once this year.

If I'm doing really dangerous shit, I'll only do it sober, just because I don't want to be that idiot that breaks his neck because he's hammered or something. I definitely enjoy my lowkey days skiing high though, I can honestly say it's had a positive impact on my ability to see features for their full potential. Different levels of sobriety=different perspectives, and new perspective can make a better skier/make skiing more enjoyable from time to time.

Only on NS would THE mod say that. Rad.

My balls go from peas to pumpkins with a little drop of whiskey from ye ol'flask. One of my favourite parts of skiing is finishing a long day on the mountain and hitting the bar with my boys, talking about the day and getting our selfs even more hyped for the next!

Reynolds is sober. No drinking, smoking, or hard drugs, since he was 24

all my shots being cooked look slightly better than shots from when i was sober, and its not just a couple its consistent maybe thats just me, but i feel way smoother and look better to

i enjoy getting a little toasty while skiing. usually at the end of the day when im done trying to get that new trick and when im just cruising

I once skied high and forgot the way i was spinning naturally. But thats just because i was too fucking high.

When i smoke and ski i feel a lot less confident because i know im not sober and i dont wanna do anything stupid and injure myself, so i dont really like doing it(I dont smoke that often). But if someone feels he skis better when he's high/drunk, i dont see why not.

Never skied drunk (always have to drive home) but I gotta say skiing while toasted is the fucking shit. The amount that it is the shit increases exponentially by two factors: the amount of friends you have with you, and the loudness and awesomeness of the music you're playing. Nothing beats a day of cruising through the park with your homies high as shit blasting your tunes.

I hate smoking while I ski because lodge food is so fucking expensive when I get munchies. also I get too spacey

I hate drinking when I ski because shortly after hitting the buzzed point I get carried away and drink until I puke/drop

Sober seems to be the best route but second choice would be high

I have only been skiing a handfull of times where I was under the influence of marijuana. My most memorable was a time I went skiing on a solo day, smoked a fat blunt to myself and the rest of the day was AMAZING! Every run down the mountain felt like I was on a ski movie and I charged all day long like I had never before.

i think the key though is to not get to ripped like a 5 ish bong rips in the car before is prime for me

A little bit of weed just makes for an chiller day. I don't ever Huck after smoking but it makes chill laps and powder runs even more fun. A bit of booze helps eliminate fear, but you have to get a perfect buzz, so you don't get too uncoordinated

i enjoy shooting heroin on the chairs.

arent I a pioneer.

its all about getting into that zone doe. That zone where you feel steezy, can land anything, and feel comfortable visualizing new tricks and committing to them. Sometimes you can get there sober. For me, after a few beers and a spliff and a good mindset, I can find myself skiing more smoothly and trying tricks I wouldn't do otherwise. If you can get into that zone sober more power to you. If you need a 40 and a blunt, go for it. Its just all about the zone

Do you find it hard to pee when off the mountain?
