Skiing Superpark

When is skiing going to get there shit together and get this organized. I had the chance to film at a super park in bachelor 2 years ago. Best time i have ever had. Bachelor only open to the riders… huge party and its up to the sponsor to decide who they want to come and enjoy the sickest biggest park of the season. They put together a video contest at the end. Best video gets to go to cabo or some tropical as fuck place. I feel like it shouldn't be too hard to get something like this going…… Rumor is June mountain is opening up again.

Super Park at Mammoth back in the day was the shit. Candide's hip hits from the one year still stand out as some of the dopest park jump shots of all time in my mind.

BRING BACK SUPER PARK!!

I think the last place they did Superpark for skiing was actually at Bachelor too. booter crunk year? was that 2005?

I believe so. Regardless it needs to happen again. It even plays a huge part in most amateur movies providing a park shoot set up that a lot of them can't get on their own.

it will happen as soon as someone throws up the money. Also, lots of other stuff to think about that...well, no one thinks about..

Cat hours. Cat time. Fuel. Big one is wear and tear on machines. Especially at years end.

These contests go after the resorts are closed, usually. Not a lot of people want to kick around and build stuff after they just did that non stop for months...

Exposure? Is it even worth it. Money wise.

Snow. Takes a lot of snow to do this. A lot of resorts don't have the snow, or if they do, it is not easy to just pile that stuff up real quick and make some jumps.

The exposure for snowboard super park is huge! They have a live feed with over 100k people tuned in and they bring in park builders from all over. 7 springs, loon, boreal/Woodward Tahoe and cooper. It also brings those mountains exposure because they get to create the park features that they have been working on all year and show everyone their potential. And the money part. It's funded by Gatorade... All it will take is someone with a good idea and motivaton to talk a big sponsor into getting it going.

Not to mention the live feed is full of easily a hundred riders that most everyone tunes in to watch. From the best comp riders to Lucas Mahon who just doesn't give a fuck and does ignorant shit through the park. It literally one of the best things that could happen to skiing.

I feel like a new mammoth super park makes all the sense in the world. it's practically the new age of freeskiing, and I wanna see someone dub over that massive hip

I think that super parks were why Poor boyz movies where such a huge hit, skiers shredded the 100% snowboarding mag features in everyday is a saturday, and made huge and creative features at mount bachelor in revolve and The cubed pipe in grand bizzare. Some people think that they have started to lose it but honestly they have put so much creativity into their movies and just because they have put more backcountry doesnt mean that their urban/park segments are bad.

I know that all of this wasnt relevant but I wanted to say that I totally agree; nine knights and JOI seem to be the two biggest comps that put xxl features.

For real. Although a lot of the slope courses are gnarly that have been put together this year. I want to see the young guns who slay super hard get a chance to gather with all the pros in one area and just everyone party and go hard. It needs to happen.

It really isn't... Just large features built specifically for invited riders. Bachelor does a great job of throwing it, I would say West Coast Sessions is the skier's version of it though.

One of the biggest issues is sponsor support. I actually championed a return of superpark a couple of years back, but every single ski company that we brought it to was like "Whoa event sponsorship? Sorry dude not in the budget."

There's a huge amount of that which goes around. Especially for something that is so private, etc.

Anyway all that being said, its probably a timing issue. I'm fucking game.

The diesel bill alone for 6 crews (from 6 different resorts) to construct for a week and maintain for another week is astronomical.

SuperPark is supported by the ENTIRE snb industry in addition to a slew of non-endemic sponsors.

This type of support does not exist in skiing.

Maybe this will help put the amount of $ into perspective.

Nine Knights takes roughly 12 guys working 12hr days 2 weeks just to construct the feature. Then add in an additional week of maintenance during the event. Then there's the additional cost people dont think about. Cost of living for workers (hotel, food, etc). Diesel fuel cost. Maintenance costs (machines break). Etc...

How so? June is open right now. If he was referring to future years he better hope California can get some fucking snow. They're not going to build at June when half the runs are closed due to lack of snow

right you are. Its just unfortunate that something like this will probably never happen…. or at least for a few years or more. But if Skiers got a chance i feel like it would be equal if not more popular than the snowboard one. maybe not the first year, but it would go ham.

No orange name?

that one with the massive inflated dinosaur was sick. parkasaurus haha. skiing was so much cooler back then when freeze was around.

seriously, though, maybe after all the olympics hooplah and talk about how much of the market share skiing is now commanding it's more feasible to bring on some bigger out-of-industry sponsors. there are some cool things happening like the B&E invitational and west coast super sessions and previous recent iterations of orage masters, but it'd be sweet to see another huge party like those ones at mammoth back in the days of ski movie 3, strike three, etc etc.

"this type of support does not exist in skiing."

how did it happen back in the day? why does it seem like the ski industry is hurting more then ever....

West Coast Session. There aren't as many big private mega build features but the vibe is all time. As long as this event can stay around I think we'll be good. Maybe in time it can grow larger and have more features built specifically for the event.

Snowboarder Magazine owns the rights to the event name Superpark, which they've sold to Gatorade on an exclusive basis for at least this year. Powder used the name for a couple of a years. The event went away after film companies started doing their own park shoots.

Powder Editor John Stifter and I explored bringing it back as soon he took over and we hit a few brick walls. We went as far as creating a thread on NS to show community support and getting verbal commitments from a few athletes as a way to entice the powers that be. In the end, they deemed the numbers don't work.

Here's a link to the first Super Park Movie: http://www.powdermag.com/mantle/superpark-the-movie/

P.S. When you say "Well why not bring back Parkasaurus?" Unfortunately, after Grind Media bought Transworld, the rights of Freeze and their properties (Parkasauraus included if they copyrighted the name) are now owned by the same powers that be. We need a new name.

Oh yeah man absolutely. Building costs are insane on something like that... You really need a ton of people to get in on it to make it happen.

There's opportunity somewhere out there, but its a massive challenge to get done correctly.

because back then skiing was minuscule and every pro was in every ski movie from 3 separate angles because there were only like 20 pros

I'm behind this idea. I've never been to West Coast Session. That being said, I've always been fired up at the media coming out of this park shoot. We should build up what we have instead of focusing on the past.

While the cost is a lot for something like this, it is not as much as you may think.

There is a lot that goes into this stuff, that has not been mentioned yet too.

true. But this thread wasn't meant for a numbers discussion i just want to get people onboard with the idea of a super park style thing for skiing.

I did hear from a friend on park crew that super park 18 will be at mammoth. Whether it will be for skiing or snowboarding I don't know. I also heard that mammoth has purchased bear and snow summit.
