Skiing is too easy.

learning how to ski is extremely difficult, the same for learning freestyle. but now with equiptment being sick and every mountain having real terrain parks, you can turn "pro" in a year. my first grind other than a tree, was a 3 foot high bar at killington. there were no super boxes at northstar or step downs at breck, there was mogul jumps and tranniless kickers. haha, im stoked on the progression of everything, but is it too easy? should 16 year olds be able to step up to our veterans? ive seen people ride switch way better than they can ski forward. than get up top and not be able to ski. at all. double flips and figure skater spins are a dime a dozen, and anyone with a water ramp and the ability to ski straight can call themselves the best at the sport? for now, the incredible tricks are just fun to watch, but newschool skiing is getting too easy.

i'm not sure where you are going with this, or what type of responses you are expecting.

plus none of that shit matters if you can't do it with style.

i concurr.

i dont really think someone can turn pro in a year. do you think I should be able to step up to pro level in one season? skiing saturday sunday all season every week? i think not. believe me i try to progress, as do my friends. but i dont think just anyone can step up to that level in a year.

it kind of seems like you have to different arguments going though. like newschool skiing is to easy and that newschool skiers cant ski anything other than a park.

in some cases that is probably true, but i know i spend a lot of my time in the park and i can def rip the mountain too (no cocky).

i dunno exactly what im trying to say, but i can definately say newschool skiing isnt 'too easy' to be up with the pros.

blabblabalab

ive never learned a trick off snow...no tramps or pools, and im not a pro. i have no claim.

im just saying that truly amazing skiers are overlooked by aerialist. it takes years of extreme skiing to do stunts like tanner hall. or have style like rainville. if you ever seen rainville ski powder its amazing. he literately makes his turns in the air. he doesnt do double flips, is he outdated?

nope

So i recently started skiing two years ago, like first time ever clipping into ski bindings and i can say skiing is no way "easy". So it took me 1 year to get all the basics, the next year aka last year i started park skiing. Don't get me wrong it is easy to progress, sure i can do 3's and 5's now, but can i do it with a lot of style? Not really... Style comes from being comfortable with doing what ever trick, and the only way you can become comfortable is by doing that trick thousands of times until you can do it without a thought. And the only way that can happen is with years of practice/

So i seriously doubt that a 16 year old, can with 1 years practice be on par with tanner hall, simon dumont etc. Even with 5 or 6 years practice i doubt they would be anywhere close, those guys have been skiing since they were 4 years old.

hahahaha, this is my point.^ when i started skiing, we were inventing this shit. thats why it was called freestyle. your just duplicating what youve seen. so your first season was off the chart actually.

i never see style, especially free style.

I am confused, you never seen style? So what your saying is a 360 from me or anyone who isnt a pro is as sick as a 360 from lets say tom wallisch? Id have to disagree. Or maybe i just misread what you said.

A beginner can turn pro in a year, but due to lack of inexperience, they tend to get hurt more often and with more serious injuries.

Veterans will be consistent, they will progress to avoid getting hurt, and also they become more familiar with a maneuver they will nail it every time. New pros will land something 1 in 3 tries, making comps useless for them.

Look at Jon Olson or Tanner hall, they have been skiing forever and never miss a trick.

i dont think freestyle is so easy....ive been skiing for 12 yrs, and i def think skiing down a slope is easy, and even doing that switch is easy, but seriously...i have never heard of someone who has been skiing for 1 to 2 years being able to throw 1080s and go pro....it def takes several years of steady progression to get even close to going pro in my mind.

even if you can pull a pro trick and you've only been skiing for a year it wont look pro until you achieve some steezy style which takes longer and expireince

FAIL,, your seeing a lo more skiers that are good because skiing is progressing and getting more popular. Its not that its easier but there are more people trying it, so you get people that are just naturals and people are skiing more in general. Although it is easier for everyone to really get into it because most resorts have all the essential park goodies.

Its not to hard to get good at skiing, spend money and you can become good at skiing. If you go to camps, academy’s, or just ski with good people alot you can get good fast.

nick is the man and always has a good point. i agree with him entirely and i must say that while it is sick to see kids like gus kenworthy, i like watching pep or pollard way more.

ps - nick im moving to co this year so let me know if you need a place to stay near breck/keystone, it would be sick to ride with you again

It may be really easy to progress but its definately not that easy to go pro. Yes, there are a ton of extremely talented skiiers out there; just look at open comps like the US Open or the N.A. Open. However, there are a few key things that separate the pros from everyone else:

1. Style: you may be able to throw a 1080 but theres a big difference between a pencil steeze ten and a styled out sw. 10 with an octo grab

2. Consistency: Can you land the trick every single time?

3. Variety: Tons of people can do tons of tricks in the local park, but can you take it to an urban or backcountry enviornment and do it consistently and with style?

4. Willingness to succeed: Are you ready to sacrifice everything to go pro?

5. Personality: You may be a good skiier but if your an a** hole your not going to get very far.

chew on that

im glad im not the only one who thinks the same. i deff agree that of all the sliding sports skiing is prob the easiest to get sick at (along with snowboarding) however that dosent hinder my desire to do it as much as possible for as long as possible. there is nothing that compares to the enjoyment of skiing steep woods with fresh snow and homey there to share the fun!.......................aside from mabey an ill skate session.

i would have to dissagree with you myfriend, some people may progress super fast but it isnt because skiing is super easy, they probably get to ski a ton and they have huge balls to try tons of things.

how is skiing easy? stomping a 50 foot cliff is hard, shredding a bc line is both ball-breakingly scary at times and requires a ton of technical skill. Throwing a stylish switch 1080 or a rodeo 7 requires perfection and a lot of hard work and dedication to eating shit but getting back up again. Hucking yourself in the air might be simple knowledge of physics and air sense, but it's also intangibly more than that, you have to feel the style, you have to know where you are at all times if you want to stomp that shit with steeze. It takes experience, skill, and passion to ski with good style/technique (depending on whether it's park or bc). In all disciplines, the risk of injury/death is huge...don't even talk down.

Even if 16 year olds are throwing double corks, what of it? They're just super good. There are maybe 20 skiers in the world who can throw a double cork with a grab all the way. There are even fewer who can throw that off a bc booter, and even fewer who can do it with style and a grab in any area. You're talking about .00000000000001% of the entire population...even less, who freestyle ski. It's not easy. It's hard and I'm proud to stand up for all my skiers who have broken themselves and stomped their way to red bullness.

skiing is not easy. you can ALWAYS find new areas to progress towards.

to become good it takes unending passion/determination for the sport.

i see what you're kinda talking about. basically park rats need to die and leave skiing to the skiers....

the funny thing aloota people on this site need to understand is that you can pop a 3 or 7 off any small lip it takes real talent to take tricks else where like freeway or A51 so this kid may be progressing quickly on crappy flats bars and 3 foot tables but it doesn't mean our sport is in fact easy in terms of style and progression

Tricks aside a "beginner" isnt gunna be able to touch a legit big mountain line let alone make it look decent. Baisic tricks are super easy, sliding a rail omg but if you want to progress and step it up like say a "veteran" you look outside of the park and conventional thinking to do something new and unique and I cant think of anyone who hasnt been on the radar for a good 2-5 years that i doing this

hey dan whats up!

this is a good discussion, and i cant really explain what i mean, but maybe things could be different...maybe were at a turning point and dont know it.

please dont knock me, im not talking shit on anyone, and im not claiming anyhting, yet.

i kind of miss those days of "inventing shit"......the days where you didnt know what the trick was, and everyday you learned something that was actually new.

If you have access to a trampoline/water ramp/ summer camp, its really not that hard to get pretty good in the park. Riding park doesnt reallly take much skiing skill. It takes ballerina skill. I mean watch any promo on ns, most of these kids dont have very good control over their skis. I guess you cant really blame these younger kids b/c getting good at real skiing takes time. You cant get good at real skiing with a water ramp or trampoline, you need snow time.

i disagree, i don't think a lot of people realize first off the amount pros ski, and had to ski to get at the level they're at. Second i don't think people realize the size of shit pros hit doing (just look at the teasers) not to mention crazy urban.

you're under estimating the level the pros are at compared to some kids promo who can ski their local mountain's park

I believe that learning how to ski down a hill is relatively easy BUT learning how to do freestyle is a much more challenging task.

ya i partly agree. some of these kids are doing stuff that no one has ever done before regardless of age, which is a pretty impressive feat. but i love the direction that nimbus and tanner is taking. skiing should be a balance of park and pow, and some of the young guns who kill the park can't drop a twenty foot cliff. thats when you know you spend waaaay too much time in the park

This is why i ski BC, part bores me and is too easy, BC gives you variety all the time, you got to know alot of shit to ski BC.

ok I might be dumb and this post is all sarcasm but you ski in an indoor skiing...isn't the BC like the floor to the outside of the park?

Yes, but i dont purely ski indoors, only in the summer, this year i spent the season in Davos and the year before in Le Clusaz.

I kinda see what he means. Some kids get crazy good at park because they have money. They're in the ski academy. They go to the camps and ski all year around. And I bet most of em only ski park and couldn't hit a big mountain line or a mogul run to save their life. Also there's no way they could do what they do at their age if they were born 15 years earlier.

thats why companys are starting to look into all around skiers who can shred sick lines and thro a switch 9 off a 50ft cliff instead of park ratz who shread the the shit outa parks but can ski the steeps.

learn to fucking ride a pair of ski's not skeeze!

Thgod all you stupid self righteous people should shut the hell up. read what he is saying before you say something and make yourself done.

he isnt saying skiing is easy, he is saying skiing is easier. look at skiing a decade or two ago, and look at it now. straight skis were still the modern technology, in order to ski backwards you had to bend the tails of your skis up. Skis have been redesigned to make riding easier, they are shorter, they have sidecut, and there are fat ones for powder, not only are their fat skis but there are fat skis with a rocker to make powder even more easy. every piece of equipment is better now than it was then, boots, bindings, outerwear, and any layer under your outerwear. There are perfectly manicured parks and runs on the mountain because of the amazing advancements in grooming. back a little while ago, jumps were not allowed at mountains "freestyle" skiing wasnt cool, it wasnt popular, it was something looked down upon the freestyle people were sort of punks, or renegades.

Now park skiing is glorified, the change in attitude is alone to make people become better skiers, they arent only doing it because they like it, now other people will like them and think they are cool or something because they are good at it.

There are special positions at mountains for people to build jumps and rails, these jumps arent the shitty handbuilt jumps that people used to have to build and hike in order to hit, these are lift accesed groomed features shaped to perfection by a special team of employees.

While YOU may not be able to become a pro in one year, im sure someone could. someone made the argument that he only gets to ski on weekends and how its impossible for him to be a pro. He wasnt talking about you, he is saying that if someone skied every day, with the mindset and physical ability they could become a pro.

the advancements in technology have made our sport much less difficult to do. the technology affects every aspect, getting to the resort, getting up the mountain on whatever lift mechanism being used, getting from the top of the mountain back to the lift has even changed.

the technological progression has taken much of the difficulty out of our sport, this guy is right. dont tell him he is wrong because you ski and you want everyone to think its hard so you being decent or good or pro or whatever makes you seem even better, or that you sucking is purely because skiing is hard. think before you say something

and im not sorry that i went on a rant, fuck you if you are so dumb u cant read a few paragraphs

it will come back to them when the company there riding with wants to go shred a BC line or some sick pow and theyre stuck looking like idiots because they cant make a proper turn.

what he's trying to say is back then we invented the tricks now days kids just copy tricks and throw there own style into the mix.  It was much more difficult back then when there was no equipment or jumps. It was ruthless and more badass. I remember it was a huge deal then to see someone try a backflip for the first time becasue they were either going to make it or end up in the hospital.

Equipment doesnt make the skier a pro....

its the dedication, drive, heart and love for the fun sport of skiing. Pro's train harder than anyone and work their butts off. Cant take that away from them, they kill it.
