im in a sports psych class and we all made nametags. Mine has pics from freeze... a big c-rail from trick tips and pollard...

The people in the class are like...

WOW...

so you like extreme sports huh? this class is for real sports though, so dont think we are gunna talk about it.

Yes in the skiing community and x-sports community we are credited as being athelets... but the rest of america thinks we are enthusiats...

baseball and football and basketball are real sports in america... to me thats bulshit. i am a bigger skiing fan than anybody is a baseball fan... so what if my sport doesnt have team rivalries or a torrid past.

its bullshit that so many people either a) brush off skiing and other 'extreme sports' and b) that everyone else compares us to snowboarding.

oh, and by the way...

i had to take a break from this site in the summer cuz I was really depressed about not getting to go to windells

skiing isn't about getting people to look up to you. skiing is about doin what you like and enjoy. that's what makes our sport so awesome.

also look at it from their eyes, skiing to them is being cold, falling down a green run, getting 4 runs in a day, using rental gear, getting taxed on lift tickets, being stuck with their family in a car to drive up, just barely being able to make it to the bar to get drunk so they forget how bad they are.

these people don't think of skiing as a sport, because to them, it is nothing more than an excuse to hang out with your family and drink at the mountain bars.

you are all about progressing your skills and doing things that look good. look at all the gaypers clothes, do you think they care if their skis are parallel going down the hill, fuck no! and a 360, oh my god, don't even get them thinking about spinning on theirs skis, that's jsut crazy talk!

i have sports psych too. my teacher is great. he's like 30 and used to work for the NHL. whats good though is that he sees all sports equally. he knows what sports everyone does in the class, and if we dont understand a concept, he will explain it in terms of our sport. so yeah, skiing is recognized as a sport in my class

dudes... i have a lot of friends back home who concider anything that involves judging, not to be a sport.

and there are times when i almost agree with them. i mean, think aboug figure skating - because it's a judged sport it has been able to get right fucking corupt, and the winner is decided before anyone steps on the ice.

how many ski competitions have you been to where the winner might not have deserved to win (a lot of time it's very obvious... i've been to competitions where when the winner is announced the audience boos because everyone (encluding the winner) knows that someone else (perhaps in 2nd or perhaps in 5th) deserved to win).

park skiing and snowboarding competitions comes down to style... like, for the pros, whoever throws the nicest switch 9 will win... i'd say style would fit better in the 'art' category than 'sport'.

and if you try to say that skiing is athletic, therefor it's a sport. well, how about bowling, table tennis, lawn bowling... fat guys who drink beer all day make same damn fine bowlers. but are they not concidered sports?

it's very had to define what is and what isn't a sport. pretty much, i'd say it comes down to - if there is competitions, than you got yourself a sport. (but than - is chess a sport?)

Why would we deserve credit for skiing? Skiing is an amazing thing and you shouldn't be worried about what people think of it. It's like sex, you dont ask for people to respect your sex do you? well bad example.. but what im saying is skiing is like an orgasmic expierence and nothing else should matter cept gliding on the beautiful snow.

Yea some people are WAY to concerned with image. If you are concerned about image, here is my tip to you: Go out and get an ugly ass hot pink 1 piece suit and find some old 198 cm planks and rock it in the park for a day (whether you go and suck it up or kick ass it doesn't matter). Make sure as many snowboarders see you as you can find.

If you're still concerned with your image, go see a shrink (seriously). (no, i mean seriously, a therapist could probably help)

I'm respected for being the best at my high school. After I had them put a picture of me doing a tailgrab 3 in the yearbook people were like Oh shit thats insane! I didn't kno skiing was like that. I know I've convinced 2 of my snowboarder friends to hang up their snowboards for good and buy some skis just cause they see through me just how much better it is. I love skiing because it holds true and so far has remained free 'posers'. Your not doing it cause you want to be cool, you do it cause theres not better thing to do in the world (besides a hot chick of course)

who cares what other people think. if all those people that played football of basketball were skiers, could you imagine how shitty the resorts would get because they would be so crowded. fuck it if we dont get the attention that snowboarders get. the only negative thing i have got for people is 'skiing is gay you should snowboard' but all those people suck at snowboarding. every good skier or snowboarder has respect for each other. if you can rip, then more power to you. like i said, who cares. its better that people think its lame because sooner or later its going to become trendy and we are going to be in lift lines for hours with people who only ski because its 'cool'

I think he just wants respect for being a skier not for being good. You don't just get respect for doing something, thats what posers are looking for. You get respect by throwing downa nd shit. For instance, i told everyone i ski, there are absolutely no skiers at my school all my friends are boarders. Anyhow they laugh at me blah blah blah, but then i show up at hill bust crazy shit out and they can't say shit, because they all blow. SO all in all, people won't make fun of u if you good, only if u suck. Respect comes from lots of work not instantly.

just be the bigger man and state that you get to see more of the world than they do by skiing. you get to be in tune with nature at its best. using what god created rather than making someting up. we use mountains that are naturally here and we also use snow which well is also just here. we progressed skis over the years to preform at their best in the conditions and no other sport can relate to skiing and the amount of terrain we cover each and every time we decent.

good points all of you. unfortunately i have to deal with this on a consistent basis. and as soon as i have money again i will deal with it all of the time thanx to the i am a skier shirt. i am proud to be a skier. the end. all of us are. i am not ashamed. and yes you have to throw down to get respect, but when you live in the fuckin valley and no one around even knows there are ski videos its a bitch trying to get people to see that im not flailing down the green runs in a neon monotard. my friends would never film last year and my parents cant ski, so i have no footy... i will this winter but thats in the future.

i guess what i really meant is that people making fun of skiing is like them making fun of my girlfriend... if i had one. its like the assume that my gf is ugly and fucks soda cans and has buckteeth.
