skiing in the French Alps

Ok so this year i really want to go to France and ski, but i have no idea where to even start. I've been looking on google at some of the resorts, but it really hasn't been helpful. I really want to go to a less mainstream, more rustic type of town. I was thinkin La Clusaz. good place? Please give me some ideas on where to go! Thanks

ok rosy, i've been skiin in France for 14 years, since i was 4 cos i am british and its too expensive to go to usa all the time, but i'm movin to mammoth in december.

Neways, if you want a rustic ski town, chamonix is the only one that was a real town before french people started building ski towns, so its pretty old, nice town, and it is featured in loads of ski films (blizzard of aahhs, 1242)

if you want assured good snow you wanna go to a high resort like tignes, val d'isere, les 2 alpes as they have glaciers and all year round snow.

i have never been to serre chevalier but my friend lives there and from photos it looks rad.

it depends what you want to ride, park or pow. you could hire a car and do a roadtrip, i've done a few summer and winter and they are rad, plus if you're under 21 u can still get wasted all the time.

^i agree. i'm briish aswell and have skiied all those places. Dont rule out switzerland as an option it rules. Saas fee is rustic (no cars allowed) with a good park and pipe and tonnes of pow. I would definatlt go somewhere high up. there have been soo many seasons ruined for my friends coz of bad snw. When it is there...it rules.

val d'isere i full of snobby british university students having a year out before goin to uni, they all suck penis and deserve an ass wooping, there are a few good riders there like milo de glanville and nicoli from denmark. its only good there during the xbox big day out, for the rest of the year, Tignes round the corner is better.

If you are looking for park I'd go to Avoriaz or Les2Alpes. I was in Val d'Isere this season - it was ok, but they were slow with the park.

 
i'm from the midlands-near stratford, its about 45 mins away from MK. I'm pissed i missed the refigerator open i thought it was next month. never mind. I have not done a season yet but i know loads who have. Should be goin to whistler or mammoth in '06 though. I go to the alps for 3-4 weeks per year.

i ski in les Arcs and it's really good (for powder and also they have a great park)

la clusaz is great too, good for powder and some of the best freestyler in france, les 2 alpes has a good park, avoriaz has a good park and freeride too

 
Description of Val d'Isere is right on Slavemonkey!

Serre Che is cool, done a couple of seasons in that neck of the woods. Shit park, but awesome bc. Thats pretty rustic in parts too, some nice little villages.

Apart from the park, Les Deux Alpes sucks. But you're not travelling thousands of miles to ride European parks, eh? Chamonix is an obvious option, check out Serre Chevalier, Verbier and St Anton too.

 
chamonix looks sweet, if i could go to france i would go there. tignes glacier looks amazing, its like 2000 vert in the middle of summer! but if i had a chance to go to europe id wanna try zermatt in switzerland. looks amazing. what kind of vert do u guys have in europe? ive heard theres like twice the size of whistler so around 10000 vert?

hey another british skier here, id go for courcheval 1650, not to mainstream and wasily the best resort of the three valeys. also when looking at a piste map if you can go left with a guide over roc merlet i think it is for some amazing deep powder. also you get the run of three valeys for a number of parks and big skis over to val thorens or even down to st martin if you have enough snow. definatly courcheval 1650 (or charmonix) in my opinion but avoid 1850 and meribel as they are to expensive and very stuck up, in the case of 1850

 
La clusaz is meant to be pretty good for backcountry- it's where Candide's from. There isn't a proper park there (I don't think) but there's a big open bit with lots kickers built by locals. It's a pretty small resort too not that comercial.

I reckon switzerland is a good bet sass fee looks awesome or there's laax. Also engelberg's meant to be good for backcountry too- and very quiet.

If you want a good park check out Are. I went there this season and the park is awesome. Although the snow was lacking there's meant to be some good back country too.

If you can get your hands on back issues of 2 then there's loads of stuff on Euro resorts. There's one on la clusaz too.

 
Yeah, i could find only a few hotels in La Clusaz, but i think thats where i want to go. I'm also looking into chamonix. No I really don't care as much about Park, (i come from Telluride Colorado so ive learned to ive without park), BUT i would like to try and ride a little park.

Do you know How Saas Fee is doing this summer? or Les Diablerets or anywhere else in Switzerland/Austria? Im gonna be skiing the region in a few days and I want to know where to go, however France is not an option. Thanks.
