Skiing in Gulmarg, India [Video]

Hey NS,

Just got back from a trip to Gulmarg, India and to say it was a crazy trip would be an understatement! After spending a day in Delhi, we went up to the mountains and started our adventure. Gulmarg had been having a really bad snow year by the time we showed up and there was barely any snow on the slopes. Luckily for us we had 3 big snowstorms in the time we were there so manage to get some quality skiing in. We actually had the first skiable week there and it was the start of February so we got very lucky.

I don't want to write to much here but if you're interested in the full trip write up you can head to my blog here:https://robin-lee.squarespace.com/blog/gulmarg/17/2/2015

In the meantime, check out this video we worked really hard on and let us know what you think.

Thanks and enjoy :)

Great film Robin, I was out there the same time as you and agree the place is crazy and a great experience.

Looking forward to going again when hopefully they are having a more typical snow year (although the snow on some days was amazing anyway); and maybe a less unstable snow pack.

Thanks! Thats crazy, did you see us around town on on the mountain? Defo need to go back again on a good year (although I did think the bad snow made the area a lot quieter) as the options would be endless! The snowpack was just the sketchiest part about it, wish I was better but not a lot you can do!

Looking at your photos I do recognise a couple of you from the mountain now yeah.

Weirdly your Sashimi gold video from the BGS competition 2 seasons back was from the same time I was out in Japan too!

Would love to go back when they have a good season - going to wait until January next year to book anything but interested in either Gulmarg again or back to Japan.

These guys are out in Gulmarg still making their film - will definitely be worth a watch when it is done -http://www.freeriderslife.com/

Haha no way? Where is out next trip going to be then ;)

Not sure when I'l be back but I'm sure it wont be too long, but waiting seems like a good idea. Japan, you can never go wrong really... After Gulmarg, I'm really just wanting to do more adventures like that. Much more effort but so rewarding! At least for me.

Ha, I saw those guys everywhere, had no idea they were filming! I saw a couple guys in Babareshee (sp) trees with a RED Epic, dont know who they were with though or if it was the same group!

Very well shot! What did you shoot on? Also how was the language barrier? (I'm assuming english to hindi or punjabi)

Thanks :)

There was no language barrier really, they all spoke English pretty much perfect! I shot it on the Canon 5D III, 7D and occasionally the GoPro4 which I think is incredible!

Thats amazing!!! What lenses did you use? The quality from the new gopros are stunning. If/when i go I'd definitely bring a drone for filming! I'm half indian (dad's born and raised in delhi) so now i really have a reason to go back to india!

I used Canon lenses, mainly the 70-200, 24-105 and 16-35. Sounds like you have no excuses not to go! You wont be disappointed if you do and a drone would be amazing there!

that was amazing, had no idea there was good skiing like that in India. Really inspiring me to do more travelling with my skis more often!

well done man. what are the cost of a ski vacation once you get to Gulmarg? lodging, tickets, food, car rental, ect.

Thanks man! It cost us no more that USD 1,500 for everything. That includes, airport transport, guiding, tickets, accommodation, food, the lot. The only thing extra we paid was for lunch (which we rarely had) and beer. We went with a company called Cloud Ski if you're interested. They were some of the nicest, most hospitable people ive ever met!

constructive critism; i really wish you would have chosen the soundtrack to be a song native to India. Even if it was one of their pop songs. Or a traditional Indian song. It seemed strange listening to a western origin song while you were visually showing the culture of India. other than that, I really like it.

Yeah it would have been those guys in Baba Rishi with the RED camera - not sure how much good ski footage they managed to get but some of the extra stuff they were filming should be really interesting.

That was actually my initial plan, but after going through a few songs none of them really fit the mood I was going for. I could have added a mellow song over the top of the intro but thought the nat sound was better. Thanks for the feedback though, defiantly still stuff to work on!

Ah thats cool, I wish I had a RED to play with.. I'll make sure to keep an eye out for it. Will be interesting to see a whole other approach to filming the same place.

I just booked my flight to srinagar. Hopefully they have a good snow year this year!

Do you think hiring a guide is really necessary?
