Skiing in France

Any one ever done it? Thinking of going there for a ski trip this winer and wanted your thoughts. Same with japan

yeah moved here from canada 3 years ago cause of the skiing & lifestyle... some things about the french are annoying, but some are good too... ironically enough you are more free to do whatever you want here.

the mountains are huge, there is no 'out of bounds', and the lifts go to to the top of the gnarliest shit around.

if you visit the tarentaise (near swiss/italian border) you get about 10 giant resorts (glaciers, 80-120 lifts each, top elevation of around 3300-3600m) within an hour of each other - val d'isere, tignes, courchevel, la plagne, les arcs, etc... and places like la clusaz, la grave, and chamonix are also not far away.

the parks aren't the best (val d'isere is the best one but the rest aren't up to north american standards) but the natural terrain will blow your mind.

i randomly ran into anthony boronowski and zach d filming some shit in la plagne for war last season and they seemed to be pretty impressed by the terrain & freedom. it was funny, they built a hit that was like a road gap over a flattish beginner run and their inrun was dodging people coming down another marked run and no one seemed to mind.

 
Yeah not really going so much for the parks otherwise would have gone to mammoth. I heard the lifts were insane, so good to ehar they are not rumors. Any more anyone?

chamonix! then head over the boarder and ski verbier... you will shit yourself with joy!

if you have the opportunity fucking take it! again I must stress that you will shit yourself with joy.

Unlimited lines/cliffs to scare yourself with... decent parks.... good party scene... deep fried mars bars... And you can still be an NS internet nerd while you drink at Cybar (before it gets too roudy)!

 
its all true, I live in val disere in the winters and we get loads of yanks over for the hors-piste. It kicks ass, our park is good enough but thetrend is more for back country.

well .. am French so I might be able to help you ... everything thats has been said before is true, if you are looking for park riding , you can head up to Val D, Tigne or les 2 alpes straight as the rest is shit.. or not up to American standard anyway.

but then again its very hard to answer your questions, but if you are looking to do off piste and back country skiing, france might be one of the best place to go.

I'd say Chamonix if you there only for a short period of time. If you stay the season: try the Tarentaise valley, like Bourg-Saint-Maurice, which is close to all the kick-ass resort: La Plagne, les Arcs, Tigne/ Val d'Isere. Sainte-Foy is very unknown, only a few lifts, but has one of the best backcoutry skiing in the region (i swear, this is the shit!).

And yes, you'd have to put up with the French but they aren't all arrogant bastards, they might even be friendly. Just be prepared for people to go on your skis in the lift lines!!

 
that's what i was about to say^

don't go during major french holidays, unless you want the back of your skis to be destroyed.

Man alive, i loved it, great powder skiing, i got a couple pics in uploaded under my media stuff. La Cluza is amazing, and there are these three mountains that are all connected,cant remembre the name of the whole group but one is meribel. DO a search for magic in motion and you will find the freestyle instructors that teach out of the mountains there. Chomonix is also amazing, but i prefered la cluza

I just wanna ski, is that to much to ask in life
