skiing as a subculture

how can you tell if i skier is NOT part of the newschool subculture: like going on NS or respecting skiing and its roots. basically, how can you tell average joe skier from soeone who knows what is going on in the ski world and knows what skiing is about, are there any real parameters?

 
they put an emphasis on the tricks they can do and try to impress others with that fact.

You rather be in the park or pow then on groomed slopes. Your skis are twin tips or wide pow skis. Backs are for back conutry and to impress the oppiste sex, not for regular use. Daffys, spreds, twisters ect... are for fucking around or used can be used with a grab, like polard and DC.

I think the only real qualification is having twin tips, being willing to try tricks, and have a passion about skiing. Oh, and you have to say 'sick' a lot.

(Kidding about the sick part of course)

im with misty7.....but twisters spreads and daffys are the fuckin shit...if you cant do a good cosack then you shouldnt be alowed to ski....you gotta know the style and the roots

no a good way to tell if some one is new to freeskiing or isnt that good at it, is they ask you what tricks you can do.

posted by ridetweaks: not just any twin tips, people with core company skis. atomic is a core freeride company right? they dont dump the majority of their profits into racing, do they? what brand of skis someone skis on has no bearing on whether they are a skier, or just someone who skis, you cant judge someone on their skis, becuase not everyone has $600 to shell out on armadas or 4FRNTs or line's pro models

 
Honeslty, its a guy whose stoked on skiing, in any aspect. They may suck at park but ski it, hit any run on the mountain and just all around have fun skiing. Glenn Plake is an excellent expample

im watchibng glen plake on Warren Miller's Storm ( not to big of a fan of the movie but im bored) and he is the man, just goes out and has fun. That guy is just so stoked on skiing its awesome

I think if you think about skiing when you are not skiing, and if you dream about skiing, then you are a true skier. Doesnt matter if you are shit, you just gotta have a passion for it and respect other riders, (and in my opinion other boarders too)..

ONce skiing takes over your life, like so many of the Newschoolers.com community then you are a true skier, all you wanna do is have fun with two skis strapped to your feet...

i agree with ^^ but also you can tell with such things as stickers on skis, how there goggles fit how comfortable they look or if they can ski switch without bending conciderably at the waist. if there out there smiling trying little goofaround stuff on anything

cant expect everyone to see shit the way i see it cant expect anyone to be dope the way i be it.

I expected the rocky mountains to be alot rockier, that john denver is full of shit!

I would say that Newschool IS a subculture. How many users does this site have? It's the BIGGEST site for newschooling on the internet.

In Denmark, where I come from, we have 500.000 members of the Danish Skiing Society (about 10% of population) but we only have about 5-10 known freestyle skiiers. Denmark is indeed behind in the development, but it shows that this sport is still in progress, still not known by a LOT of people in the world.

The definition of a newschooler, in my oppinion, is a person who continually likes to develop skiing into something different than traditional skiing (racing, slalom etc.) A person who skis a slope (or park) in a creative and indivdual way, adding tricks as jumps or jibs, and developping personal style. But also a person who is openminded towards other sports in effort to encourage the spreading of the word 'Newschooling' and the sport itself.

Justo8484 i havent paid more then 200$ for a pair of skis. I skied Mike Nicks last year got them for 200$ and i have skogens now witch i got for 150$.

You said you're doing it for a paper right? So that means for some sociology class or something? Well a subculture has its own vocabulary, dress, accepted norms, etc.... So people who can use 'switch 270 on', 'gorilla steeze', and 'jib' in sentence show that they know the skiing lingo, if they have armada or line tshirts and wear bandanas and have long hair have some ski style (you can argue with that if you want, its an example), and if someone thinks that a powder day is the best thing ever and its totally worth missing work for, or that being a ski bum is ok, even though everyone else thinks its a waste of money then they have differnet values than mainstream culture. These are just examples. I'm not writing the essay. but look at what subculture means to answer this.

I did a paper on this too. Its cuz we are trying to break free of constraints. Fighting againt the norm. We broke free from freestyle which broke free from regular skiing. Basicly we are a subculture of a subculture.
