Skiers thumb

so I just got skiers thumb and I have to get surgery so im wondering if anyone has had this and how long it takes to get back in the game. I also broke it in a two spots but I have a cast so I figured that it didn't really matter.

LOL

no im kidding youre really cool and hip and new wave and shit. whatever you kids call it these days. trendy?

how many skiers at the xgames did you see not using poles?

exactly .

I had it last year on one hand, and like my first fall this year i re-injured it. i don't think it will ever go away.

hold your poles so the strap doesn't go over your thumb? or is this unrelated to straps

I took some no pole runs today cuz i was at a race and felt the need to look even more park ratish. It was fun. Vail has some hella fun boxes

seriously?

you'd think by now people would learn how to put their pole straps on so they don't get destroyed. i'll help.

1) put your hand UP through the strap

2) grasp handle around strap and pole

3) if you fall, let go, and the pole will fall below you, and the handle will not be a lever on your thumb to destroy it

4)?????????

5) Profit

no most people go down through the strap and just grab the handle so when they fall, the strap holds their hand around the handle and they fall on it, and the handle acts as a fulcrum for fucking shit up i guess

I feel for you man, for all who don't know what exactly skiers thumb is, it's wheer you tear the ligament that helps with the "grabbing" motion of the thumb, ei. holding a pole. Tore mine in the yard, hurt for a LONG TIME. Still does when I'm liftin. I didnt catch mine early enough to get surgery (you need to in 3 weeks or they cant fix it), so but after like 9 months I don't feel it anymore.

But you still have to drop the pole, maybe its just me but when Im going down I dont think, hey I should throw my poles now. It doesn't matter what way you wrap your arm around the strap, if you dont throw the poles, its going to hurt your thumb.

Either way, no poles.

poles, full tilt, jiberish, eg2crowbarIOs, tall tees, and anything bigger than 2xl make you at least 2 times the better skier. Everyone knows that.

but you do have a penis, my sweet. just think of every clit as a tiny, non-urinating cock.

same thing happened to me last season but it didn't require surgery. mine was just a fairly mild ligament tear, and i didn't stop skiing, just wrapped the hand and skied slightly more cautiously. not sure how much longer your recovery time will be, but i'd imagine at least a few weeks. and that fucker will hurt for months after. really a bitch of an injury. +vibes.

meh when i skied with poles i knew how to put them on properly and still hurt my thumbs. it doesnt really matter how you wear the strap, you can still hurt yourself. my solution is no poles, especially in park.

what this thread is fraking me out, i just got it today, fell on it twice, it really hurts, but do i need surgery, i dont want pain for 9 months that sucks. Is surgery necessary or is that just for extreme cases? it hurts though without a doubt.

I have never hurt my thumb from poles. I don't use the strap when in the trees but i find it very helpful having a strap on my hand, i really don't want to lose my poles.

I have major skiers thumb and it has nothing to do with straps. i have the habit of putting my hands down base of thumb toward the ground, if im about to fall. i just wear a thumb brace on whichever thumb hurts the most. although its very annoying

just lose the poles and start skiing as soon as youre comfortable

i was skiing 2 weeks after breaking mycollar bone

This. My poles don't even have straps and I've gotten it. It's all about landing on your hand holding your pole, and crushing your thumb with your body weight on your pole. fuckin hurts

the poles have nothing to do with it when i get them... Its just my thumb sticking out and then i fall and my thumb gets dragged and wrenched and its sucks

You're a fucking idiot. I broke both my thumbs this season, and I wasn't using pole straps either time.

Does anybody have any working advice for how to prevent this (other than just not wearing poles)?

Exactly why I don't use pole straps. They are also dangerous skiing in the trees, if your pole gets caught on something and you have pole straps on you can cause some major damage to your wrist/elbow/shoulder. I'd rather lose a pole than get hurt.

Poles don't cause skiers thumb, but i do agree that its dangerous if the pole gets caught in trees or a fence net or something.
