Skiers thumb

i dunno bout any of you guys but i have problems with skiers thumb. when i go skiing i usually tweak my thumb from takin spills and holding on to my poles. two years ago i actually broke a piece of bone that attatched to a ligament. it almost had to be repaired by surgery. anybody else have this problem? do you know how to stop it from happening?

if you wear the strap on your poles make sure you put your hand up threw the strap and hold onto the pole over the strap. if you go down through and the strap is on top of your hand youre doing it wrong.

you can still hurt your thumbs that way..
to the thread creator, if it bothers you that much, i would suggest getting something like this..

i have the same problem, ive broken both of my thumbs at various points. They get tweaked at least twice a year and it sucks. takes me out of the park for a few days.

you can still hurt your thumbs going no poles. if you are using poles what i said is the best way to do it.

ya i got that a couple seasons ago. it seemed like every time i fell it would tweak the same injury again and again. my mom actually had to have her ligament reattatched. my only way to heal it was to stomp everything and never fall again. my thumb is great now

oh shit that was supposed to be a pm to somebody

anyways i broke both my thumbs the same way you did, but now that i wear my sraps correctly i never get them.

4 times...had to get surgery and have this huge ass pin reconnect my ligament because it had coiled up toward m wrist....my mom didnt love me enough to bring me to the doctor after 3 weeks of not being able to move it and it was black and blue. FINALLY she did and then i had to go to st marten with a freaking cast....ya try snorkeling with a fucking cast!! not fun at all the only postive in this entire situation was i got this sick cast with velcro on it and i could change the colors to it i had pink purple and blue ah yes those were the days when i would match my oufits to the velcro. by the way this was when i was 11 luckily i have not injured my thumb since i was 14 but yea it sucks try to avoid ittttt

oh yer not alone. my left thumb wont go all the way up and theres this giant lump of bone on the side

i feel your pain, as i think i have perma skiiers thumb. sometimes its so bad i have to ductape my poles to my gloves, it sucks

I have learned a few tricks that help me avoid injuries like and other arm area injuries too

1. Dont wear pole straps in the park, theres really no need unless you super worried about a yard sale.

But most of all you need to train yourself to not stick your arms out when you fall, tuck em in and take the fall like a man.

yeah I broke my thumb when I crashed in the park but I didn't even land on it, i think my pole just twisted it around or something. I guess not using straps in the park is the best way to avoid that, or no poles at all

if you have skiers thumb your are wearin them wrong.. i used to get it reallll bad.. fat bruises.. anyways.you put your hand through the loop and then grab around the strap and the polehandle.. if that makes sense..

I tweak my thumbs all the time and yes it does suck. whether it being longboarding, skiing, or whatever other sport where it happens, i suggest heat for the first 24 hours after tweaking, then ice. it cures it in about 1 1/2-2 days. this works best for me.

im a sucker for skiers thumb- seems to happen a bunch.

worst was at wssf pipe and fuckin broke my thumb during practice. that hurt so bad, and i still feel the affects 1½ years later.

i get it too, usually from landing on it or putting too much pressure on handplants. dont know how to prevent it really, maybe keep your hands in fists haha

I got it really bad on an overshoot and my right thumb has hella scar tissue all over it. I got in two fights on halloween and now both thumbs hurt still like a bitch. Oh and my left foot is hella bloodied and swollen cause I think someone foot stomped me, I dunno I was blacked out raging on ten guys im told haha.

Skiers thumb is a bitch, now I got it on both hands. I usually let it run its course and it goes away but theres definitely a permanent loss of movement in my right hand and hopefully my left one isn't too bad but its really sore two weeks later still.

yes i know your pain.

4 seasons ago i broke my left thum at the end of the season, then the next season i broke the same thum twice in the season, as well as damaging the ligaments on seperate occasions, then last season i broke it 3 times, as well as crushing the ligments on a seperate occasion. all on the same thum.

now i cant move 1/4 as much as my right thum, and it clicks when i move it

yay :)

Hurting your thumb is just a part of skiing. I hurt mine at least twice a year. It sucks. For the longest time I didn't use pole straps and still hurt my thumb then last year I started using them and still hurt my thumb.

i always have my pole strap over my hand... i like how when i let go of the pole it still stays in my hand.
but I usually only hurt my thumb in the park - and i don't use poles much in the park anymore so... I guess I have no point to add to this thread so I'll just shut up now.

Yeah I tore a ligament in one, dislocated and chipped it at the same time. I had to have surgery but it's fine since then. I had my physio make me a splint which I wore the following year but it's strong now. They told me if I'd waited the ligament would have shortened and would have taken a whole lot more work to fix so you might be screwd if you've been ignoring it. You would know if it was torn though - you can't pick up a glass of water - your thumb bends back to about 120 degrees.

i got skiers thumb last year and broke it while getting it, i rode no poles while it was in the sling thingy, and it actually did help, but no poles isnt my thing

for some reason I only jam my thumbs when I wear pipe gloves. And i always jam my thumbs when i wear pipe gloves.

I used do it the way your talking about, I have personally found that I tweak my thumb less with just going through the strap once straight to the pole. I think its just one of those things thats going to happen. I never do it going no poles though, because you can just make a fist or bring your arms when you hit the ground.

when i use poles i dont use pole straps so if you are going to use poles id recommend not using pole straps atleast to help prevent injuries.

i have noticed this also. only hurt my thumbs when i was wearing thinner synthetic gloves. Thick Leather all the way.

best way to not get skiers thumb wait scratch that not get hurt is just stomp your tricks... easier siad than done though, my left thumb has been broken 2 times and my right once

I had the same exact problem..

I took a fall 3 years ago on a rail (first time hitting rails)

knocked 2 teeth out, broke my thumb and basically tore through the ligament that skiers thumb is associated with. When the ligament tore it also pulled a piece of bone off and it floating around in my thumb somewhere haha

went to the docs and he didnt even take a close up image of it, basically just took my thumb bent it and told me i need surgery that following friday. Well 2 days before the surgery, swelling went down, pain was subsiding and i was gaining movement in my thumb. Got a second opinion, kept it casted for another 2 weeks and it healed up. Doc said i may have problems later and may have to get it fixed though.

Every now and again i have some pain in my thumb when i fall but it goes away within a day. I dont use straps on my poles, when im not in park I do.

my thumbs are so fucked up too. when i fall and put my hands down its usually my thumb that gets crushed. ligaments suck
