Skiers that didn’t go to ski school?

If you want to get good at skiing, ski academies/coaching is simply the best way to do it. If I had that opportunity I would have taken it. I think most people would.

Depends I think. If you want to live that life and have a coach go for it. From my experience I know more kids that would prefer not to ski around with a coach all the time and travel to competitions. Depends on what kind of skier/person you are. If you are more concerned with making money someday, like me and most of the kids I know from NY, you probably wouldn’t go even if you had the chance.

Yea yea I know everyone hates him but pretty sure David Lesh started his pro career by illegally hopping a train to Oregon or something crazy

You always find a way to criticize. Everyone such a bitch on here thinking it’s always about hate. It’s a question, what skiers did not grow up learning from a coach. Don’t need to get soft.

I didnt. Ask me anything

I mean a lot of the older generation did ski racing but they definitely didn't have academies like today.

MSA, SMS, KMS, CVA etc all had freestyle programs (both overnight boarding and day school) in the early 2000s

I went to ski school when I was like 3. It made me into the skier I am today and I couldn't be more thankful for the little learners program.

yeah basically this. i wouldnt be able to do shit if I didn't go to ski school

not freeski coaching, just ski school for the fundamentals

it's not ski school that's the problem it's the boring comp mentality

I feel like ski camps and shit dont really teach u that much its just fun. Shit like wy'east def makes you good tho

I mean it makes a lot of sense for off season skiing. If suddenly my mtn had a full park set up first day of the season I wouldn't be able to throw down my best tricks from the end of the previous one for the first week or so. Skiing year round helps a ton with constantly progressing.

Did a weekend program from ages 5-15 that was freestyle from age 8. Very focused on fundamentals and I'm definitely a much better skier because of it. Also met most of my friends that I still ski with there. Honestly comps are fun af at a young age but it gets way too expensive to be fun once you get older unless you got fat stacks. At 16 I just wanted to ski with my friends so I stopped competing but I probably would've kept at it if my parents had the money for a ski academy.

Ski school is a glorified day care. Change my mind.

Like I just said, if I didn't go to ski school I wouldn't be able to ski for shit down even a groomer probably.

Shit is also fun asf when you meet new people and ski around the mountain with new friends who can keep up with you

Mostly jealousy, this guy probably dislikes a certain skier that he knows went to a ski academy. Its a classic example of generalization.

I was going to avoid this thread but its pretty wack to judge skiers this way, everyone gets into skiing different ways and in the end, were all skiers. Being hateful towards someone because they were able to go to ski academy is stupid, its not a freebee. These kids still ski hard and work hard towards their goals, anyone can do that man, you dont need a school to get better at skiing.

The guy asked what well known skiers didn’t go to school. What about that is hateful? If anything, wouldn’t it just inspire young, not so wealthy skiers to “make it” if they’re aware of others who did without expensive coaching?

I swear your brain is the size of a peanut. Always jumping to negative conclusions and arguing things that never happened.

Because he made it about how if you went to ski school you're a bitch with rich parents blah blah blah. Dude could've just said "there are a ton of comp jocks or whatever nowadays who get coached and taught, what skiers have reached mastery without that?" But he had to say some shit about how some ppl who ride Vishnus are actually bitchmade ski school dropouts or whatever. So wack. I guess it's "Fuck anyone who has a family who isn't poor and enjoys skiing together" now lmao ?

I guess I'm getting riled up but here's some stuff from Henrik Harlaut's bio:

Born and rasied[sic] in Stockholm, started skiing when i was about 2 years old in Väsjöbacken, Stockholm. My family would always go down skiing to the alpes in France at every vacation. Started Alpine racing when i was 5 years old but at that time my biggest passion in life was Ice hockey. At age 9 my family moved up north of Sweden to Åre (swedens most populair ski resort) because my oldest brother was starting Ski racing academy. And when i moved up there i got introduced to ”freeskiing”...

When I was 10 years old i went on a racing camp down to Italy and on the bus down there i met Jacob Wester (Swedish pro freeskier) and he told me...i had to learn how to do a backflip once we would get down there. And after 3 tries i landed it and it was one of the most amazing feeling i have ever had...Got my first sponsorship when i was 11 by Scott and they invited me to freeski camps/shoots and i was beyond stoked. Went to my first US Freeskiing Open when i was 13 years old...next year i went back...and landed my first switch 1260. Jon Olsson...invited me to his competition Jon Olsson Invitational and... got to hang out with all the best skiers in the world

turns out Henrik has been guided by others through every step of the freeskiing progression journey since childhood. I guess he sucks for wearing baggy clothes and emulating the Wu-Tang aesthetic now. /s

I learned how to ski when I was 16 and was coaching the race team at Baker at 19 /claim. 0 formal training. Had no clue what I was doing or why they offered me that job.

I call it how I see it, you're hating on kids bro and claiming you're not hating is hilarious. Sorry you don't agree with me, but you're the one who's being a bitch about it.

Damn man since when did you become so condescending? Check the ratio on your posts in this thread and you'll realize the vast majority don't agree with you but you're still tryna act like you're the shit. Idk maybe I'm reading this wrong but your tone just makes you come off the wrong way in this one chief.

If you think I care about downvotes, you got me all wrong man.

Maybe I read this OP in the wrong tone, but this dude came off hateful towards anyone who went to a 'ski school' which i think is just out of pocket. I've mostly been trying to stay out of this one, but of course I say one thing and everyone decides to clap at me.

You have to admit though, being a skier from a rich family isn't too far from what the Wu were mocking back in the day:

First of all, who's your A&R?

A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar?

skiing is like the only thing where a dude that lives in his car can be buds and hang out with a guy that lives in a million dollar house

What the hell does it matter where anyone came from or how much money they have? Its such a high school mentality, making comparisons like that. If you're a good dude who cares. Reading posts like these suggests that if your family has money or if you are born into a life with more opportunities than others you should just throw it all away. Just because your parents have money doesn't mean they didn't raise you right. There are douchebags out there both rich & poor. Sure, having to support yourself and going through hard times builds character, but doesn't automatically make everyone out there who hasn't struggled a d-bag.

You come off as hateful towards most every post so maybe next time just don't say anything.

OP many pro skiers didn't go to any kinda academy, or have coaches growing up. This is definitely more of the case with the older generation because freeskiing was kinda new.

Moving forward you might be hard pressed to find any pro comp skier that didn't go to an academy, or grow up having a coach. I'd imagine most, if not all of the people that go to the Olympics, or in the Xgames in the next few year will have gone to an academy. It will informally be a requirement moving forward.

Who are you talking to

It strikes me as a parallel to kids who are really good players In youth football or basketball. Getting pritave coaches and going to high schools just for sports to improve you skills and get more marketable to college programs. How skiers would do this to gain knowledge and skills to assist with turning pro. Alot of it is having who you know and people in your corner that can help guide you in the right direction. But as mentioned either person needs money to attend ski academy or private schools and get private coaching. Its happening in everything the specialization of skills and people making a profit off of parents willing to help their kids. But I'm a trash skier who never had any coaching so just speculating

I care because it makes their skiing more or less relatable to my own. Why would I want to watch tricks that people learned from coaches on foam mats/tramps when I would have to learn that same trick on the snow. I can instead watch someone who learned everything the same way as me and get a better understanding of what a practical progression for me looks like. If I was rich I would absolutely care about the 2160 as its actually relevant to something I can learn. Maybe if we didnt have such a massive wealth gap in the US we wouldnt feel this division in skiing so heavily.

what about if you dont have rich parents so you get into dental school just so can afford to go to ski school when you're 30/make your own. Does this count? also is this bs since my kids will get privilege of my hard work? Do i not let him on my dry slope airbag until hes a doctor or what? Asking for a friend

Its not a bad thing to have that privilege. I dont think anyone has a problem with rich kids going to ski camps and practicing on airbags all afternoon. I just wont ever be impressed with any tricks you learned on an airbag. Also when I find out you used all these little aids I lose intrest in your skiing as its just not relatable. I dont hold any hate for you for using those aids, I just dont hold any intrest in you either. If you are skiing right tho it shouldnt matter who your skiing appeals to because you are skiing for yourself.
