Skiers making a living off skiing

This would be much different if the question was $100,000+ per year.

It also depends if you include benefits in that $50k or if you are talking about straight cash, pre tax etc.

Bottom line there are a few skiers that make a lot, and a heap of skiers that make very little and struggle.

99% of this site has no idea what they are talking about with regard to this topic (including myself) so threads like this just turn in to speculative bullshit..

If I remember correct a X games gold medalist wins $50000. it would be quite hard for andreas not to make 50000 this year then. There is not a lot of cash in skien but for a photo used in allmost every nation people ski you can expect to get some $.

hasn't jon signed the biggest ever deal money wise with cross, that would have to be worth a shitload when he lives in monaco and drives a lambo and has his comp

jossi has had a huge year, podiuming at pretty much every comp hes entered

im just guessing that a majority of those skiers make 50k a year

I think your list is very off.

My guess is the only girl making that $$ is Sarah Burke maybe Ingrid.

I would say 50k + group would be....

Candide

Tanner

Simon

Seth

Jon

I want to say JP because he co-founded armada

Sammy

Andreas

Maybe Vanular

Pep

Pollard

This is pure speculation, I have no idea how much any of these guys make, but like it has been said before Tanner, Simon, Candide, Jon, seth would prolly be the only really high rollers.

Obviously a seasons income depends on how well their competitions went. Last year Simon obviously made atleast 200 000 from winning all the events and having sponsorships shell out cash because of that. This year I would have to say the same for jossi wells and colby west. True there is not much money in the industry but you have to remember that most of their living expenses are paid for. I would have to say that the top 25ish can get by. Think about it contest winnings, sponser payouts, movie segs(small %), selling old equipment, owners/involvment with companies.

Top 10 Money Makers in the competitive scene are(entitled to speculation)

Jon Olson

Simon Dumont

*Tanner Hall although he doesn't compete much but just winning the X Games every year would give him an income over 50K

Jossi Wells

TJ Schiller

Candide Thovex

Sammy C

Andreas Hatveit

Colby West

Peter Olenick or Riddle

Fuck I really have no idea but my point is there are alot making over 50 K

Why? Is knowing how much a top pro makes going to somehow better your life?

Most of the big names make well over 50k, enough said.

Well then, apparently you don't "remember correct"... X-Games prize money went up this year from 20K for first (which it has been for the last 3 years) to 30K. However they also withhold 30% of that prize money for taxes, so the people who won 30,000 were actually given 21,000.

Of course SOME of the athletes have lucrative enough victory incentives to turn that 21,000 into much more. But then again, some of the athletes in the X-Games work as landscapers and camp coaches in the summer so that they can ski in the winter.

Bwahahahaha! Ooooh, oooooh, oooh - my turn!

What's the easiest way to lose a quarter of a milion dollars?

Start a ski company!

Truth is, there is no money in the ski industry. My advice - get a real job. I don't know anyone making 'good money' working around this industry. Stories pay like $50 for basic stuff to $400 for a good one. Features can hit the thousand mark, but usually you're on your own for travel.

Athlete sponsorships average like $500 per month and you have to fight for anything that isn't in your contract. You wanna talk about incentives... Think about who is getting those incentives all the time. It's ten comp guys who battle it out for podiums, not the hundreds who don't make top ten or the movie kids. Do you really think Rossignol is gonna pay a rider for making an appearance in the movie they paid to get him into? Nothing like throwing $50,000 around to put one rider in one movie. Anyone here really think he's gonna get 50,000 kids to buy pairs of skis sold from that appearance? What about return on investment? Man, everyone here's losing money. Like two percent of the industry is living comfortably on their skiing careers - and that's not just athletes. Most of the editors of ALL the major magazines were sharing apartments just a couple years ago cause they weren't being paid enough. The athletes aren't any different. You think they live together at 23 cause it's cool?

Hate to sound so negative. Honestly you're doing this because you enjoy it, not to get rich. That includes athletes. Take a look at NFL players. They do get compensated pretty nicely. Granted they help bring in a ton of dough w/ fans, but they're getting slammed like it's cool every day. They clearly want to take hits like that - they even like it. Our athletes are putting a lot on the line and it's not because they're getting paid big bucks. It's because they love what they do too. The same can be said for almost everyone else in this industry. It's going to be this way for a looooong time to come too.

It is a lifestyle. But either way, if you are making $50,000+ at 20 years old, than you're probably doing better than most of our parents.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't. What do you think "living well" means?

For me, it's a comfy apartment/dorm room at a college/home (depending on age, enough cash to get food for every meal without too may hassles, and a car.

Well lets see here. I'll give you the benefit here and go low end. Say 450 a month on rent so thats 5400 a year. Gas for a car, what, 50 a week, so thats 2600 a year. Oh and dont forget insurence on that car thats about 90 a month so 1080 a year.....Wait, we're already over 8k. Damn and we haven't even gotten to car payments (if there is one) or food, and any other bills. So realisticly that's not "Living Well." Maybe if you go to a 3rd world country then yeah.

i dont get why everyone is like OMGZ JOn DRIVES A LAMBO WITH A SKI RACK. It was probably a gift from a sponsor, there is no fucking money in skiing, and tanner probably makes more from his real estate investments than he does from skiing.

dude you might be the most retarded person eer. so his sponsers give him all te money for his cmp? and his uultima? and all his other cars? im sure they do .

FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME:

THERE IS NO MONEY IN SKIING.

Jon made his money by investing and hitting it big.

then how did Tanner and Pete O purchase homes in their early twenties?

i'm sure they were involved in some investing as well, but who planted the egg? parents or sponsor money?

jon is the highest paid skier in the world... He has a lambo with a ski rack on top..

And for and for any skier.. if u win a comp like th nippon open or just as big of a comp u will get like a $500,000 cash prize for winning...

others countries besides the U.S. completly revolve around there ski resort.

haha I really hope you are joking.

"nippon open will win you $500,000" - take away a couple of 0's, bud.

well i don´t really have a clue of how much the big guys make but if you look at some circumstances.. i don´t think they get that much of money (but still more than the 50k so i guess they´ve a pretty good life) if you think of oscar scherlin who won two cars this season.. i mean selling one will afford him some months where he doesn´t have to care about money.. tanner hall won a bmw x3 a few years ago and just gave it to his mum. if you are wealthy enough to do that you earned a bit in your life .. pro skiers don´t have to pay for almost all off their stuff. companys pay for their trips around the world (just think about the flight costs, hotels, food..), they get their clothes for free.. so they can basically bring every cent they earn straight to the bank. and do you guys really think tanner would leave out a chance of getting some 10000$ extra cash at a contest if he would get just a few thousands from his sponsors over the year..?

jon and crill fly first class from the us to monaco..? think of the costs and than tell me there is no money in skiing.. of course they´re not billionaires.. but i don´t think they have to do a second job.. and i´d say product development is just a part of being a pro skier so i wouldn´t count that as a second job.. a car racer is paid for car racing even though he helps progressing the car ..

but that´s just my opinion :)

it was estimated in Journal magazine that shaun white makes 10 million a year, but he is an olympic athlete and is on the top in two separate sports

Jon probably does make over one million. There are some people out there that make good money.

Jon has a place in Monaco. Apartments in Monte Carlo go for something like 2,000,000 u.s. He also has a Lamborghini.

There are some big mountain guys that make pretty good money, and some big mountain Euro guys too. My guess is Jon is at the top other than maybe a few racers like Bode.

This is true. What I do not know is whether or not he still HAS to do this. Hoji should be starting to make some pretty good money. He deserved segment of the year this year, although I thought Tanner's was sick too.

Actually dude I just checked out the Nippon Open on NS news and both slope style and pipe winners where holding cheque things with a 1 000 000 on them. I then punched the million into a currency calculator and that comes out to $10 088.70 US sorry to burst your bubble.

As for this I don't have much of an idea either, though I do know that low level pro snowboarder's will start at 5 to 10 dollars a year as a pretty standard contract (my buddy is a filmer for Sandbox and lives with Kevin Sanslone, that's how I know this) they also get a travel budget (which I have know idea how much) and photo incentives. On the opposite end of the spectrum Travis Rice reportedly turned down 1.2 million from Rossi to go to Lib Tech (a Rossi rep told me this back when it happend). And one more example, if any of you remeber Jordan Munk, he rode for Line, well he's good friends with a cousin of mine and I was talking to him at my cuz's wedding about 4 years ago. Now if I remeber right he told me that when he signed he got like a $ 3500 signing bonus (he didn't tell me how much he got a year) he got a travel budget of like $ 8000 and he got a certain amount of money for photo's I think 1500 for a full page pic but I can't remeber but hopefully it helps this situations out lol.

I'm going to quote Andy Mahre again (circa 2006): "My cousin that works at olive garden makes more than me..."
