BREAKING NEWS: Skier killed on Crystal Mountain

A skier was killed Friday afternoon in an accident on Crystal Mountain in Washington state when he fell and suffocated in deep new snow, a spokesperson for the mountain said.

Two skiers spotted a pair of skis sticking out of the snow near a tree, dug down, found a man there, then notified ski patrol.

The 44-year old man had apparently suffocated when he fell in quicksand-like condiitons, ski area spokeswoman Stacy Schuster said. The man's name is not being released.

The death came as crowds at Crystal were enjoying perhaps the best skiing of the year at the mountain, which has seen 56 inches of new snow fall in just the last 48 hours.

Tree traps suck! I got caught in one at Lake Louise and I had to get a snowboarder to pull me out!

hey thats not funny - not sure if that guy was riding bc. But thats the exact reason you never go back country skiing by yourself. I know this may not be much consolation but at least he die skiing.

I agree but if it was his passion then what a way to go, I'd rather die doing something I love like climbing or skiing or mountanieering then laying in a bed waiting for death to creep up. But someone dieing in a freak accident is nothing to laugh about!

yeah im from CT and we dont get powder here, and i dont know what a tree trap is, and i dont know how to recognize them, avoid them or get out of them if its possible, so can someone tell me a little bit about them because im going out west this winter and i really dont want to die

Um, i ski east as well, but i'll throw this out and someone can correct me should i be wrong. I think a tree trap is when the snow lays on the tree. Say, a pine tree for instance. There could be two feet of snow over the tree, which is pretty buried, but the snow isnt all the way to the ground. So when you ski over it, the branch holdin gup the snow give way and you fall down into the tree. This happens becuase the snow builds up on the branches of tree and leaves a sometimes large hole under the snow. Hopefully that makes sense and is the correct information

that happened here a few years ago. The guy didnt even get found till the summer when these hikers discovered what was left of him.

This happens alot, NARSID's (Non Avalanche Snow Imersion Death's) are real dangerous and kill people more than anything else on the mountain except avalanches of course.
