Student killed in Canada ski accident

BRIEFING: MANKATO, MINN.

A Mankato student died after a skiing accident in Canada, a school counselor said Monday.

Michael Gjerde, 18, a senior at Mankato East High School, died Sunday after he fell on a ski run in Whistler, British Columbia.

Gjerde was skiing with a classmate when he fell, according to school counselor Katy Ojanpa. A ski patrol found Gjerde and he was flown to a nearby hospital in Squamish. He was speaking with rescue workers while they took him to the hospital, Ojanpa said.

Few other details were available. An autopsy was scheduled.

Ojanpa said the school was providing counselors for students, who were told of the death Monday, and will have memory books on hand for students and friends to sign.

from what ive heard from my buddies it was on the last jump on the right side of the "black" park though its not the black park yet... the jumps are getting fairly large and the conditions are fairly hard... don't be stupid.

The truth, all though Pat's wasn't far off.

He was on vacation here with his family. Ski patrol was alerted that there was an unconscious 18 year old at the bottom of the terrain park. 5 patrollers and 2 doctors arrived on the scene. The man regained consciousness and was conversing with patrollers. He was heli-evacuated to Whistler Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries while being prepared for a helicopter ride to Hospital in Vancouver.

Holy shit i think i saw that, i was on the halfpipe and i heard a bunch a yelling and stuff. Then like 5 minutes later some snowboader over shoot the landing on the last (open) jump and there was more yelling. Did the kid try to hit that last closed jump or smothing.

He didn't die from head trauma.

I forget the article link but it was in Whistler magizine called PIQUE or something like that. According to the article a helmet would not have saved him. RIP and best wishes to his family and friends.

RIP... Very sad news.

and yeah, wear your helmets kiddies. Everyday. I ended up with my worst concussion ever from just playing around on some rollers and slipped out (on a snowboard a couple years back) and cracked my head on ice (WITH a helmet on and a mouthguard in too cause I had just slid some rails and I like having teeth)I spent 2 days in the hospital one of which I was hooked up to an iv throwing up. Took me weeks to be able to remember anything more than my name. They told me that if I didn't have the helmet on I would have 100% fractured my skull. This wasn't a crazy crash and it wasn't on a huge jump or anything. I was just fooling around on some little rollers that had a sheet of ice between then from some rain a few days before. Injuries dont just happen on the big stuff. Head injuries aren't anything to mess with. Wear a helmet always.

yeah, i KOed myself over the summer with a helmet and mouthgard too... because i like whats left of my brain and teeth... id probably be right fucked up if i hadnt had them. couldnt say though, dont recall the event.

I read in the Pique that the feature he attempted to use when he passed away was closed. I don't know how much truth there is to that. As unfortunate as this whole series of events is, if you're not going to wear a helmet (which didn't come into play here as he tore his aeorta), at least don't be ignorant. In my opinion W/B parks are fucking sketchy as it is even on things that are open, if you're gonna fuck around with closed shit...

oh and dave, i would normally agree with you about the general sketchiness of the park, but this year is the best maintained park ever, and its not even full of 1/4 pipe style jumps yet

I was definitly impressed with the quality of the park today. And the guy who works the gate looks just like Jussi Oksanen!
