Skibum Life Planning

I've been doing the whole ski bum shtick for 5 years and am not ready to grow up yet.

During those past 5 years I have spent winters in tahoe, utah and the summers living in a car at hood.

After shredding snowbird this winter I've realized the utah culture is too stiff and boring off the ski hill to stick around another year.

I absolutely love riding the bird/alta but can't stand when I have to come down to slc to get groceries etc. Salt Lake is a polluted mormon nightmare that makes going back to Govy oregon and Reno nevada alot more desirable.

So I've begun to formulate plans for where to chase snow next.

I'm seeking unparalleled skiing, a moderate cost of living, easy commutes to the ski hill and a wide range of other outdoor activities.

Options I have tossed around:

Scummit County (Frisco/Dillon)

Positive: Close to 4 resorts, 14ers, Legal weed, woodward copper.

Negative: Vail Corp. Cost of Living. Bros. Denver traffic.

Girdwood AK:

Positive: Alaska, Touring, Fishing, National parks, natural beauty.

Negative: Rural, Little daylight in winter, less challenging skiing.

Mammoth CA:

Positive: Sierras, California, Close to home.

Negative: Crowds, low snow years, proximity to airport.

Jackson Wy:

Positive: Amazing skiing, Tetons/Yellowstone.

Negative: Finding Housing, Commuting, Wages.

I grew up in Girdwood and got some insight on it. Alyeska is a very fun resort with some nice terrain and amazing skiing if all the terrain is open, however if the northface isn't open it makes fresh snow days get tracked out way faster. Also, there is hardly any ski treeing, thats a big factor to take in. Passes are very expensive, but are certainly worth it with the amazing seasons we can get. Also Turnagain Pass is about a 25 minute drive away from Girdwood with great sledding access to skiing.

The town of Girdwood doesn't have any decent grocery stores at all. The nightlife in Girdwood is alright, with a couple bars to choose from. Anchorage is about a 30min drive away to the south end and thats were I do all my shopping and has all the entertainment and needs I need in a town. The Daylight thing you get use to and really isn't that bad, as long as you stay active and go outside.

The Summers in Girdwood are amazing with fishing on the Kenai being within a pretty close drive, mountain biking at Alyeska, and any summer activity you can imagine in Anchorage. Sorry if this post is really fumbled together haha.

Message me if you got any questions about Alaska, Girdwood, or Alyeska you need answered.

Not sure if you'll be able to swing it, but I say you gotta do the mid season change up. Start somewhere with a good early season, probably summit or maybe baker? Mid season, head up to alaska. It's all dark and shit up there in the early winter, fuck that shit

But have you considered bozeman? Not too big not too small, decently close to the resorts and there's plenty to do in Montana besides ski

Have you considered Bozeman, MT? Housing is a lil easier than Jackson.

The Bozeman region has filled it's NS quota for the next 10 years sorry.

I would recommend jackson from the ones you have recommended. I have never been their though. I have been to girdwood and Alyeska and I don't think I would really recommend it compared to other places you could go. The last two times I have been their it has been raining a shit ton and that was in February both times. That probably just shows I was unlucky but if you went their on a bad year it is so close to the ocean and moist it could be immensely shitty especially if north face doesn't open. Also you are living in anchorage which is the shittiest grossest town of any size in Alaska besides Wassilla.

if it weren't for the mos the lcc conga line would start at sugarhouse

thanks for being a one n doner

you are the 1st person ive ever heard call ak skiing less challenging

and caused me to spit coffee on the keyboard

BC. I would go somewhere undisturbed close to the coast. You get a lot of snow and a slightly wetter more stable snowpack than continental
