Ski waxing necessary after 6 times?

Hey guys ive been skiing my new sticks for 6 days now and the guy at the shop told me to get them waxed every 5-6 times (i dont know if this is bullshit) but yeah they have some base scratches that i need to fix with some p-tex sticks. Thats besides the point however, basically i have a three day ski trip tomorrow and im nervous about fucking up my skis will they hold up for a 7th 8th and 9th time of shredding?

Answers much appreciated!

Its good for your bases to wax after every few times up but it won't be the end of the world if you don't wax them. They just won't be quite as fast as they could be

They won't get fucked up at all. They will last longer, if you wax them often - and the performance of the ski is faster.

When buying skis, my advise is spending those extra 100 dollars to get a full waxing set so you can maintain your skis.

and after around 5 times of waxing, you have already saved money on buying your own gear.

And take a little money for waxing your friends/parents/whatevers skis!! :)

i haven't waxed my skis all season. my bases are super white and they are in dire need of wax. but I'll probably get to ski once more saturday and thats it so i'm not even gonna bother.

i.e. you'll be fine.

Thanks guys for the responses. And yes a waxing kit sounds like a great long term investment im really digging it! Cheers.

It is not even a long term investment. If you're making a little business here and there and skiing 20 days+, you have saved money quickly :)

you wont fuck up your skis :)
i usually wax somewhere between 5-10 skiing days, but even if you don't wax a whole season, your skis wont explode, the bases will just start to look gnarly after a while ;)
if you want to do ski maintenance yourself, give it a try, go to a shop, get yourself a brick of allround wax, an iron and a plexi scraper and give it a try or have someone at the shop show you :)
good luck !

i found this wax that you can put on with a sponge thats included. it was 15 dollars for about 5 waxes. forgot brand but i know its blue.

Your bases will be a lot more prone to gouging without wax, as wax reinforces the base material. I wax every few times I go, otherwise my Afterbangs don't carry enough speed for the bigger jumps and jibs. Most good shops will do a basic wax for 10 or 15 bucks on a waxing machine. If it's a performance or race wax it will cost a bit more. My shop for example charges 10 bucks just for a quick, simple hotwax with a waxjet machine. Otherwise, waxing is kinda fun and really simple to do at home. Tons of stuff on youtube on how to do it. Either way, waxed skis beat the hell outta oxidized, neglected skis.

that stuff is fine but will not last as long as a good hot wax. its best to just drop 60 or 80 bucks and get a decent waxing set up.

it depends on what base your skis have. If your bases are extruded (like Afterbangs) then they do not absorb wax, so ironing is a waste of time. Just use a rub on every time you go out and it will be ok. If your bases are sintered, then you should wax your skis often (more the better) as it will prolong the life of your bases. They will be faster and more durable.

this stuff works great. its a cooking wax that you can get in almost any grocery store and a box is only like $3.

you probably can't tell just by looking at the ski, best way is to check with the manufacturer. That info is usually in their catalog or on their website. Typically if the ski retails for about $500 or more, it will most likely have a sintered base.

My chronics were waxed once this season, got roughly 30 days on them so far, and I am having no problem. It really depends on the ski and the conditions. I'm sure my chronics would be much faster with a fresh wax, but I don't have a wax kit at school and they are already fast as shit.

sometimes you can tell if its sintered or extruded by how it looks/feels...but yea look it up.
i wax mine probably more than necessary cause i like a fast ski. i hot waxed my extruded bases super good one time with a bunch of passes with the iron and two layers of wax.....only lasted like a day and a half and went white again...
so with extruded i would just throw a quick layer of hot wax on every couple times you go out..

You really don't even need to do that, it won't help at all as the base is not reactive to heat like a sintered base is. Don't waste your wax or your time. Just use a rub on, like Maxi-Glide, which is meant for extruded bases.

I haven't waxed my bases since I got my skis. Its recommended that you wax your bases every few times you ski, Or when you start to see white stuff around the perimeter of the ski on the base

if your base is starting to get white, it's already dead and you need to get a base grind. Letting your base get white is going too long. It will still glide, but it won't be that fast or as durable as a maintained base.

Guys this might be too much to ask for but could someone post a picture of a base that has turned white and is in need of waxing just so that I can compare because my bases seem as if they would turn into that after a couple of days skiing...

check out tech talk on NSTV. they really get into detail about this kind of stuff. specifically episode 5 of the first season.
