Does anyone on here make a living from making ski videos?

not at this point...maybe in the future if i step up my game. amateur is hard to get off the group because of how sick major pictures are now

many people on here will try to tell you that they do. It all depends on what a 'living' is defined as. but i know of three, maybe 4 companies that make enough money to pay expenses, plus a semi- decent salary. Thats MSP, TGR, PoorBoyz, and maybe Level 1

JoshB, yes. the rest, no. levin (jibtech) makes a living, but it's not from videos. Anthony (h30films) makes a living, but it's from being the anon ski team manager.

I am just wondering, cuz I am going into film school right now and I really want to do this for a long time, but I don't know if it pays well enough. Do pro skiiers make much money? Like how much, and what would you consider a living?

Bacon Bits makes a living from those hotdog eating contests at Coney Island.

Not from videos (he sold 5, not including friends and relatives) and Anon, which will be firing him with the collapse of their ski program later this year.

If you want to make money in the video industry quickly porn is the place to be. That sounds funny but its the truth.

Ski videos while fun, are losing the ability to make any kind of solid profitability. The market is very saturated with "amatuer" companies. Every kid with rich parents has a GL2 or some equivalent, and a pirated copy of some NLE.

The only way to be successful is to be on the cutting edge every year from now on. New formats (HDV), more intricate editing (lots of compositing and animation filler), and new devices to change camera angles (cranes, dollys etc.). In addition you better have TOP NOTCH skiers because every kid with a pair of sticks can do 540's and 270 on/off everything. The features have to be the biggest and most unique every year, and you can't use the same feature in every guy's segment anymore.

If you do all of that, every single year you make a video, you will still only be mediocre because every other company with a budget is doing the same thing.

I hate to sound negative but that's the reality of the situation.

True that, I think if you are making a movie as an am, you should just pass it out for free at numerous events. If you run out of copies take down orders and charge $5-10, if people won't buy, then just make more cheap copies and give em out. Give them to every company rep you can find, and give them a phone number so they can call you if they are interested in a rider.

i produce videos unfortunately they are low quality porn involving mostly myself! it hasent really taken off yet but ive got my head straight and my hopes up ! things are gonna happen for me

Pow, I'm not much for the porn business but I have one suggestion.

It's good to have your head straight, but much more important to have your HEAD UP in order to successfully shoot porn.

You can't get rich but it's an easy market to sell your product and making a living is easier than in ski vids.

 
the skiers don't make any money from being in the films. Seth Morrison does not get paid by MSP to star in the movie. His sponsors take care of that. I used to think that the production comapnies had to pay each skier, but they don't. It's nice. I think the sponsors pay for most of the films. that's what they are there for right?

 
me and my friend have a poor company , our teaser was hot sauce ... we have bad cameras but Final Cut Pro and are interested in makin vids but we dont exaclty have the talent... so $ is outta the Q , jsut for fun
